Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

It had been so rough, losing Morgan again.

Chad felt like he hardly survived the first time. Worrying over his younger sibling, not knowing if they were alive or dead. . . It had been agony.

Then Morgan was home again, brought to them by a man with shining eyes that called himself Prince Alexander. He was clearly a mage at the least, if not someone— or something— far stronger.

Diego worried after Morgan far too much for their own good. Chad had done his due diligence; he’d made sure that Morgan was acting of their own volition, he watched the way Morgan and Alexander interacted.

They were in love. It was obvious to him that they loved each other. Chad knew they must’ve met before their arrival at the palace, that they came back for a purpose. He didn’t know what it was, nor did he care. He was just happy to have Morgan back.

Then it all came crashing down. Morgan was gone again, last seen on the back of the very same dragon that had taken them before.

It took months for Chad to find out what really happened.

Diego had uncovered the truth— that Alex was a dragon— and panicked.

”I confronted them over it, in the library,” Diego had confessed tearfully. ”I was foolish and I didn’t listen to them when they tried to get me to stop and— and they collapsed.”

The time Morgan had fallen ill again had not been because they were neglecting their health. That alone had been shocking for Chad.

”Morgan fell so sick from the stress, I didn’t want to bring it up again. But I couldn’t let him marry a dragon. So I. . . I told Mother and Father that Alexander was plotting to usurp the throne.”

Chad knew where the story went from there. Mother told Morgan that the wedding was off, and they summoned the dragon— Alex— before jumping from the window and spiriting away.

Time passed. Chad wondered if Morgan would ever come home again. Perhaps if they found it in their heart to forgive Diego, but certainly not if Mother and Father were still alive.

That was all right. Chad could wait. He’d always wait, for his baby brother.
