Kerberos: Moon of Pluto
The mission was simple. Study the Moon of Pluto. There stood three men, extracting ice from the moon.
“Easy son, this ice is very delicate.” Samuel Holt exclaimed to his son. A smile began to grow onto Matthew’s face. “Amazing. Isn’t this exciting, Shiro?” Matthew quickly turned his head to the third person on the moon.
Shiro, gave a small chuckle. “You guys get a little more excited about ice samples than I do.” he responded with a big smile. Even though this was great, Shiro wished he could have shared this moment with Adam. Samuel, noticing the strain smile quickly added on. “This history is in the making! Not only have we traveled more than any human ever has, but this ice could hold microscopic clues about the existence of life outside Earth!”
The thought of that brought a big smile onto Matthew face, he was definitely going to brag to his younger sister once he gets back. “Think about it Dad!” “We could use those clues, to become the first people to come into contact with aliens!” A bright chuckle was heard from both of the older men.
“My life’s work would be complete.”
They fell into a comfortable silence, finishing up their task.
The ground began to rumble. They all shared worried glances at each other.
“ What is that?” “Seismic activity?” Samuel yelled
“We should get back to the shi-”
Matthew dropped the ice causing the other two men to look back at him. There in front of them was a gray and purple warship, coming towards them.
“ Wha- what..”
“RUN! Come on. Run!” Shiro grabbed Matthew’s arm and started running. Sam ran right behind them. Shiro heard a sound behind them, soon he heard Sam and Matt yell out. The last thing he thought about was Adam and Keith. It soon faded to black.
The first thing he saw was a gray floor.
“Emperor Zarkon, we were scouting system X-9-Y as ordered when we found these primitive scientists. I don't think they know anything useful”
X-9-Y?
Emperor Zarkon?
“Take them to the main fleet for interrogation.” a sigh was heard “The Druids will find out what they know.”
Interrogation? What do they want?
“Please we come from a peaceful plant! W-We mean no harm!” Another sigh was heard before a solid object met with the back of his head.
He was being dragged. Falling into and out of consciousness.
A bunch of cells, he hears talking in a language he couldn't understand.
1 Year later
“Galaxy Garrison flight log 5-11-14.” “Begin descent to Kerberos for rescue mission.” Lance spoke to the speaker. For a quick second the simulator jerked, a groan was heard. “Lance..” His face turned green. “Can you keep this thing straight?” Hunk gave a sigh. “Relax Hunk, I’m just getting a feel for the stick. I mean it’s not like I did this.” Lance quickly moves the stick causing the simulator to jerk once more. Hunk felt like throwing up. “Or this” Lance had a devious smile onto his face, quickly moving the stick again.
Hunk wanted to throw up on Lance.”Okay..” he was feeling really ill now. “Unless you want to wipe beef stroganoff out of all the nooks and crannies in this thing.” Hunk took a pause to keep his vomit down. “KNOCK IT OFF,MAN!” he yelled at the man in front of him. Lance gave out a small laugh.
On the other side a monitor made a sound. Pidge looked at the monitor with a small smile. “We’ve picked up a distress beacon!” Lance looked at the boy in glasses. “All right, team look alive!” He gave a big smile “Pidge, track coordinates.” Pidge gave Lance a small nod and began to work. Once again the simulator rumbled and alarms went off, causing slight panic within the crew.
“Lance..” Hunk was about to start going off until Lance glanced at him and cut him off. “Oh this one's on you, buddy. We've got a hydraulic stabilizer out.” Hunk gave a wide eye look and pulled the monitor closer to his face. Pidge rolled his eyes. “Oh no.” he gave out a quick sigh. Trying to keep his vomit down, “Oh no-” Lance made a disgusted face “Fix now, puke later.” Pidge shrieked and gave out a panicked yell. “I lost content. The shaking is interfering with our sensors!” Lance gave out a low groan “Come on Hunk!”
“It’s not responding.” he let out a big sigh. He unclipped his seatbelt and made his way to the box on the floor. Once more he tried to choke down his vomit.
The monitor in front of Lance activated, making him jump.
“Oh nevermind fellas.” Lance gave out a small grin “Thar she blows. Preparing for an approach on visual." Pidge gave out a frustrated sigh, giving Lance a glance. “I don't think that's advisable with our current mechanical and..” Pidge glanced to where Hunk was trying to choke down his vomit. “Gastrointestinal issues” Hunk gave a Pidge a weird smile before choking down his vomit once more.
“Agreed.”
Lance rolled his eyes “Stop worrying. This baby can take it. Can’t you, champ?” he pats the dashboard. In return the simulator rumbled violently. Quickly moves his hand away.
“Uh- see she's nodding.Yepshewasnodding. Yesnodding.” nervously looked around.
“Pidge, hail them down to them and let them know their ride is here.”
Pidge unbuckles his seatbelt, and starts to reach for the microphone. “Attention lunar vessel-”
The simulator shakes once more causing Pidge to lose his balance and falls off his seat.
“ACK”
Lance quickly turned his head to Pidge with a panicked face. “What are you doing?! Get in your seat and buckle your belt!”
The simulator rumbles violently once more.
“And Hunk stop that shaking!” he said with a huff.
“I- oh- I’m-oh no” failing to keep it on this time he throws up into the main gearbox and the simulator stops rumbles. The other two make a ugly face. Pidge once more grabbed the microphone. “Attention lunar vessel, this is Galaxy Garrison Rescue Craft One Victor Six Three Tango. Coming in for landing and extraction, against crew recommendations." Pidge gave Lance a glance
Lance rolled his eyes and gave out a small sigh “Uh, no time for your time for your mutinous comments now, Pidge . They're going under and we're going in." He tightens his grip on the wheel and dives towards Kerberos. Remembering a hot head who liked wearing red.
Pidge gave a squeak “Look out for that hangover!” Hunk gave out a groan.
A grin on his face Lance replied “No worries! My first year in flight school, you know what they called me? They called me 'The Tailor' because of how I thread the needle .” Pidge rolled his eyes while Hunk gave out another groan.
“Come around, come around! Come on, come on—!" Lance started shouting.
During his shouting the simulator had hit the overhang, causing the simulator to shake very violently. Hunk let out a gasp “We lost a wing!”
A sullen face took onto Lance’s face “Oh no” The simulator crashed a voice comes over the incom ; “Simulation Failed”
With an upset tone “Nice work, Tailor” Lance looked away, he was upset. He knew if…
Behind them the doors open. Heavy footsteps. Iverson's figure enters the simulator.
“Roll out donkeys!”
All three let out a groan. They follow him out to stand in front of their class. A certain classmate is holding back a smug smile. "Well let's see if we can't use this complete failure as a lesson for the rest of you students. Can anyone point out the mistakes these three so-called cadets made in the simulator?" A few mutters were heard. A hand flew into the air.
"The engineer puked in the main gearbox!" Many nodded their heads. Iverson closed his eye for a few seconds and nodded his head in agreement.
"Yes, as everyone knows, vomit is not an approved lubricant for engine systems. What else?"
"The comm Spec removed his safety harness"
"The pilot crashed!"
Proud he smiled "Correct. And worst of all, the whole jump, they're arguing with each other! Heck, if you're going to be this bad individually, you'd better at least be able to work as a team! Galaxy Garrison exists to turn young cadets like you into the next generation of elite astro explorers, but these kinds of mental mistakes are exactly what cost the lives of the men on the Kerberos Mission."
Pidge widened his eyes. That was not true, he couldn't believe what he just heard. Their wa no way h-
“That's not true sir!” The room went quiet, all heads looking at Pidge. “What did you say!?” Iverson asked in shock. He swore there was movement walking out of the room. Lance quickly covered Pidge mouth, they already failed the simulation there was no point of making their teacher even madder.
"Sorry, sir! I-I-I think he may have hit his head when he fell out of his chair. But point taken." Lance quickly said with a nervous smile. Iverson gave out a frustrated sigh."I hope I don't need to remind you that the only reason you're here is that the best pilot in your class had a discipline issue and flunked out. Don't follow in his footsteps.” Lance froze in place, bringing his hand to his side.
“Next!" Three other students headed into the simulation. Hunk, Pidge, and Lance looked at the floor.
Soon class was over, Lance was on his bed thinking. Thinking back to what Iverson said, so what if he lasted this long because the top of the class was now gone. The next time he would see the pld top of the class he was going to punch him. But right now he wants to be on top. So in order to do that he needed to bond with his team.
He quickly heads to Hunks room and knocks on his door. Hunk opens it, smiling. “Lance?” Lance takes Hunks hand and says “There's no time for explaining right now. Do you know where’s Pidge room is,Hunk?” Very confused points in the direction of his room. “Why do you even want to know Pidges room? Lance has a crooked smile on his face. He looks behind him towards Hunk and says “Well I was thinking of what our teacher was saying and I kind of agree we should do a team bonding activity so we are gonna grab Pidge and-” Iverson walks out of the room “Five minutes until lights out. Head to your rooms.”
Lance and Hunk moved to hide behind the trash cans. Footsteps echo the halls. The lights in the hall turn off. They left their hiding spot and started heading to Pidge room. “Boys?” Frozen in place, looking behind them stood Adam. He looked at them weirdly “Uh- we” Adam gave them a small smile and looked the other way. A smile flashed across Lance’s face. They both quickly ran to find Pidge.
Instead of finding him in his room he walked out of Iverson’s office. Which was weird, why was he there. Out of Curiosity they follow their fellow teammate to the roof. They watch him set up a few things and decide to make Pidge aware of them.
- ••
Pidge let out a sigh.
“You come here to rock out?”
Shocked, Pidge let out a squeak and jumped from his spot. “Oh it’s just the two of you.” quickly going back to his spot and sitting down. “No, actually I’m looking at the stars.” He gave a small smile, almost lost in his own world. Lance looked at the computer in front of Pidge.
“Hey where’d you get this stuff? It doesn’t look like Garrison tech.” Pidge gave a smirk “I built it.”
“You built this.” He tries to touch the equipment but his hand is quickly smacked away by Pidge. “Stop it. With this I can scan all the way to the edge of the solar system.”
Lance quickly thought back to all the time Pidge would get defensive about Keroberos. “That’s right? All the way to Keroberos?” Pidge looked away but didn’t deny anything. Hunk tries to touch the equipment once more.
“Hunk!” “Second Warning!”
Hunk quickly retracted his hand and gave a pout. Lance gave a glance to Hunk and went back to looking at Pidge. “Look, Pidge, if we're going to bond as a team, we can’t have any secrets.”
Pidge looks down, almost like he was having an inner battle. He looked back at Lance and gave a smile and patted a spot next to him on the ground. “Ok. The world as you know it is about to change.” Lance and Hunk looked at each other. “ The Keroberos mission wasn’t lost because of some malfunction or crew mistakes-!” Hunks hand was hovering over the equipment, in a moment of heat Pidge smacked away Hunk’s hand “STOP TOUCHING MY EQUIPMENT!”
Hunk gives a pout but finally stops. Lance watching the whole show gave a small smile.
“So I’ve been scanning the system and picking up alien radio chatter.”
Hunk looked towards Lance and was met with a confused face.
“Woah, aliens??”
“Ok, so you're insane. Got it.” Lance started getting up until Pidge pulled him down. “I’m serious!”
“They keep repeating one word: Voltron.” “And tonight it’s going crazier than I ever heard!”
Lance, looking at Pidge, replied “How crazy?”
At that moment an alarm. The group jumped from their spot from the floor. Soon the intercom comes on. “Attention, students. This is not a drill. We are on lockdown! Security situation Zulu Niner. Repeat: All students are to remain in barracks until further notice.” Iverson said in a rapid voice.
The three of them see a bright fiery object in the sky start to fall.
Back from the dead…
Shiro was fading in and out of consciousness.
He could hear someone talking to him.
“P-| state y- nAme and your p-“
His ship finally hit the ground and he smiled. He got here first. That’s all that mattered.
“Shiro?”
…..
Watching the ship hit the ground Pidge said “We’ve gotta see this ship!” and ran. Lance quickly followed but stopped when noticing Hunk hadn’t moved. “Hunk, come on!” Hunk let out a groan and followed after them “This is the worst team-building exercise ever.”
Getting closer to the ship. Lance could hear a faint sound of a bike getting closer.
They used some binoculars Pidge had to have a closer look at the alien ship. Lance moved the binoculars to look at a lady. “Whoa.…what the heck is that thing… Who is she?” Pidge smacked Lance and moved the binoculars away from the lady. “Lance!”
“Will never get past those guards.” he responded back. Hunk gave a happy face “Aw,man. Yeah- we yeah I guess there’s nothing to do but head back.” He faked a pout and started to walk back. “Wait- they have a camera in there and I got the feed to it.” Pidge said.
Maybe the cameras were not the best thing to watch. There on a table strapped was Shiro.
Their jaws dropped.
How-
“Iverson let me go, you have to listen to me!”
Iverson gave a sigh. “Shiro, please calm down. We have to keep you in quarantine until we can run some tests.” He gave a tired smile. Shiro tried to move. “You have to listen to me!” He let out a breath that’s been held in for what it felt like years. “They destroyed worlds! Aliens are coming!”
Lance looked at the other two watching the feed.”He’s the pilot for the Kerberos mission,Shiro my hero!!” He gave a quiet cheer. “Guess he’s not dead in space after all.” Pidge gave out a frustrated groan “Where is the rest of the crew.” The sound of a bike sounded like it was closer.
Iverson gave out a huff. “Do you know how long you’ve been gone?” “Adam has been worried sick, he missed you so much.”
Shiro stopped and looked at him. “I don’t know, months?” “The aliens are coming here for a weapon, they are probably on their way here right now.” “So in order to protect Adam, we need to find Voltron!” Shiro shouted. He didn’t mean too.
The three looked at each other remembering what Pidge told them earlier.
A technician went next to Iverson. “Sir, take a look. It seems his arm has been replaced with a cyborg prosthetic.” Iverson looked at the arm, and gave a worried glance. With a sigh he said “Put him under until we can know what it can do.” With a nod the technician went back to his spot. Shiro’s eyes widened “Please don’t put me under, Let me talk to Adam please!”
Pidge gave out an annoyed and frustrated huff. “They didn’t ask about the other crew.” Lance looks with confusion “The guy is a legend, why aren’t they listening to him?”
“We need to get him out.”
Hunk groaned with annoyance “Hate to be the voice of reason. But weren’t we just watching on T.V because there was no way to get past the guards?” Lance rolled his eyes. “That was before we were properly motivated.” he gave a grin.
“Maybe we could get some hazmat suits and sneak in like med techs." Lance gave a nod at that.
"Or we dress up like cooks, sneak into the commissary... little late-night snack." Hunk really wanted to go back to the base. Both Lance and Pidge gave Hunk a face.
