Work Text:
The door was slammed open and six young children ran out of the house. Five of them were wolves, one of them was a human girl. She was accompanied by one of the wolves, another girl her age. They were the youngest ones in the pack, but also best friends and sisters.
"Slow down, children. You can't risk getting your clothes dirty." the mother wolf of the pack shouted after her sons who was too eager of getting out and play to remember their manners.
The two girls never forgot them, though. Unlike their brothers who always settled down on play-fighting and getting their clothes dirty, the girls liked to sit down on a quiet, peaceful place and make flower bracelets for each other. They were already sharing one, always hanging around their wrists to show their bond.
As always, the two sisters settled down in front of a bush with daisies to make flower crowns and necklaces. The human girl, Jolene, had been taught by her sister Margot most of the best ways how to tie the flowers together to make something beautiful. Jolene tried to make a crown, but it parted and made two ropes instead. To joke around, Jolene tied the two together before bringing the ropes of flowers around her head, placing it over her mouth. It looked as if she had a beard and mustache.
"Look at me, I'm an old man!" Jolene giggled, making up a dark voice to sound like a man.
Margot giggled and copied Jolene's trick and made herself a beard. The two quickly got up and ran to the water, where they trained to jump over rolling logs, to look themselves in the water. They burst out laughing when they saw their faces in the water and the flowers fell off their faces and fell down to the ground.
"We look hilarious!" Margot giggled, trying to keep Jolene from falling backwards in laughter.
"Yeah, we did!" Jolene giggled, tears in her eyes from how much she was laughing.
The two was smiling at each other but was interrupted when their mother called for everyone to come inside to get their food. Jolene and Margot had earlier begged their parents to let them eat outside for once, and the alphas had agreed. The six children ran into the house to get their meat pops, one for each of them.
The boys decided to just eat on the porch, not wanting to risk to get their food dirty. Margot and Jolene moved back to the water to just relax and watch the stars above and the big moon. Jolene took off her shoes and placed them beside her as she and Margot sat down on the edge of the grass, letting their feet dangle above the water surface. They ate their meat pops, shoulders pressing together. Nothing could be more perfect right then. Suddenly, a thought crossed Jolene's mind.
"Margot, do you think we'll always stay friends?" Jolene asked, letting her feet touch the water as her feet dangled back and forth.
She knew that a lot of childhood friends parted when they grew older. Margot would probably get a new pack of her own when she grew up and started a family, and Jolene would probably do the same. But the five year old girl still couldn't help but hope that she and Margot always would stay together, maybe even get a pack together one day. She luckily didn't have to worry about a disappointing answer as Margot looked over at her and smiled.
"Of course we will! We've got to stay together, mother says so all the time. As long as we all stay together, we'll grow stronger!" Margot answered and Jolene smiled back at the wolf as she wrapped her arms around her in a hug.
When they let go, the two sisters took another bite of their meat pops and looked over the logs floating in the water. The beautiful moment didn't stay for long, though, as one of the boys suddenly came up to them from behind, scaring both of them as he roared and got a grip on Jolene's shoulder, causing her to drop her half eaten meat pop into the water. All she could do was watch as it sank to the bottom.
"My meat pop!" Jolene said sadly with a pout before she turned around to see her brother laughing on the ground. "Daniel! I'm gonna kill you!" Jolene said playfully, getting up on her feet as she started chasing the boy who was already running away from her.
Margot watched her sister run after her brother in playful anger. She was laughing and smiling at her siblings, cheering on Jolene to take Daniel down. When Jolene didn't seem to get any luck in catching the boy, Margot joined in too.
They were sisters after all, and sister had each other's back. Always.
