Summary:

What happened to Wolf that caused her parents' death?

Notes:

A theory of what happened to Wolf and her parents.

Work Text:

The humans screamed and ran, everything was chaos. Big stones fell from the roof as the burrow was collapsing. A few bodies from the already dead people was sprawled out everywhere. Bombs could be heard above the roof every few seconds. They were found.

A young girl, barely four years old, was screaming for her parents. She had been playing outside when the attack started, her parents were frantically searching for their only child, wanting to survive together with her. The mother eventually laid her eyes on her child, sitting down on a fetal position close to their house.

"Jolene!" the mother called out and her daughter immediately looked up towards the familiar sound of her mother, reaching for her.

The mother ran to her daughter and picked her up, holding her close to her chest as she wrapped her arms around the shivering child who was crying in fear. The burrow humans tried with all their might to get away, but it was too late. The roof fell in, landing on a few humans who died a quick and horrible death. Soon after, apes riding on flamingos flew into the big opening of the burrow, grabbing any human their claws could catch before leaving. The humans screamed in horror as they were grabbed and taken away from their home.

The mother held her daughter closer as she ran away from the mutants who tried to get them. Eventually, the father to the child joined his family and they together tried to get out of the burrow before it was too late. Little Jolene was crying out of fear as she held onto her mother for dear life. The small family was nearly out of the burrow, taking the safest way out which was the door leading to what had used to be the subway track a long time ago. It was now used as a secret tunnel to get outside of the burrow safely. Sadly, the two parents didn't realize how many flamingos were there. Another bomb fell down on the roof and more stones fell down.

The father opened the door to the secret tunnel, yelling to his family to get in. It was too late. A big rock fell down on the mother and the child was thrown out of her arms and through the open door. The father panicked and tried to help his wife, but the rock was placed right over her legs and it was too heavy for one man to move by himself. Jolene was crying louder in her panicked state, reaching for her parents to come back to her. The mother was losing conciousness as her legs started flowing red blood. The father realized that there was nothing he could do. He couldn't leave his wife to die, but his daughter had to survive.

"Jolene, listen to me!" The child's daughter pleaded and she choked on a sob as she tried to listen to her father's last words. "I need you to be a big and brave girl for me, can you do that?"

Jolene nodded, trembling in fear as she saw the flamingos getting closer. There was no more humans in the burrow to capture except for the father and his daughter.

"Run through the tunnel and get to safety. I can't come with you, but you need to stay strong! Climb up the ladder at the end of the tunnel and survive. I love you, Jolene." he said, tears of his own running down his cheeks as he picked up a sharp rock to defebd himself, hoping to survive so that he could reunite with his child.

"B-but, da-daddy!" Jolene sobbed but her father shook his head.

"There is no time. Run, Jolene, run!" he yelled as he turned his back on his daughter, hearing the flamingos shriek behind him, their claws ready to catch him.

Jolene sobbed and watched her father one last time before she shut the door closed. It was heavy for someone who was so small, but she managed just as the flamingos got to her father. The last thing she heard was his screams as the claws from the mutants caught him. They lifted him and started flying towards the opening of the burrow, but the father wasn't giving up so easily. With the sharp rock in his hand, he stabbed the flamingo in its feet which forced it to let him go.

He fell down to the ground, but he had forgot about the big rocks that was all over the old burrow. His head hot the edge of one if the rocks and he slowly bled to death, wishing for his only daughter to survive by herself before he took his last breath and closed his eyes.

Jolene was crying as she walked through the dark  tunnel, trying to find the ladder that her father had talked about. Her blue burrow-uniform, with the sumbol of a daisy on her back, was teared up and she was bleeding from her arm from when her mother had been hit by one of the big rocks. Her heart was beating out of her chest and she could barely see anything through the tears. Eventually, she managed to find the ladder. It led up to the surface. Taking a few deep breaths, the young child started to climb the ladder, her hands shaking.

When she managed to open the last door, sun hit her eyes and she whined. It was really light on the surface and everything looked so different than what she had thought. Her parents had told her stories about how it used to have looked like. They had read books and seen pictures from the old world, but nobody in her burrow knew how it actually was since everyone was too afraid of the mutes to actually see the surface for themselves.

The little girl got out from the dark tunnel and into the light. She seemed to be on the foot if a mountain. She could see the crater of her burrow a while away. It was surrrounded by daisies which probably was how the buttow got its name. Jolene was too afraid to see what was left from her home. She didn't want to see the dead and bloody body of her mom, and possibly her dad. Tears ran down the cheeks if the young child as she made her way into the forest beneath the mountain. There was a lot of trees there and it was dark.

The young girl walked for hours before she sat down by a tree to take a break. A human like her never realized when she stepped into someone's territory, but the owners of it sure did. Two grown wolves was watching the child from a few bushes. They never let prey like that go free, but the female wolf got an idea. She walked out of the bushes, startling the young child who backed away. Stains of not so old tears was present on her face and the wolf tried to look as nice as possible to not scare the child away.

"Hello, little one. What brought you into our forest?" she asked as her husband joined her, watching the child with a frown.

"I-I'm sorry... I'll leave." she stuttered, sounding terrified and small on her voice which had the female wolf grin.

This would be easier than she thought.

"Don't be afraid, dear. We aren't here to hurt you. Are you alone, child?" she asked with a sweet voice and the girl nodded, more tears making their way down her cheeks.

"Dead..." she said, not louder than a whisper as she tried not to burst out crying again.

She was scared and alone, she wanted her parents to come back and comfort her, but something deep in her mind told her that she'd never see either of her parents again and that made it hard for her to keep her feelings inside.

"I would feel bad for letting such a young girl wander on her own around here. Come with us and we'll keep you safe." the wolf promised.

Jolene looked at the wolves. They didn't seem bad, they seemed really nice. She was still not sure. She turned around and looked back where she cane from. She could easily go back and try to survive on her own, though she somehow knew that she wouldn't survive for long on her own.

"I understand that you're afraid, it's to be expected. But if you go with us, we'll keep all of your fears away."

Jolene turned back to the wolves and looked up at them. They were both smiling now and the words from them that kept repeating in her head made her make up her mind. The female wolf reached out a hand for Jolene to take and after a few seconds, she took it and let herself be led deeper into the forest by the two adult wolves. She took one last glance behind her.

There was no going back now.
