Work Text:

Billy wasn’t sure how he got there. He didn’t know why it was the first place he went. But here he was, sitting in the driveway and Eddie “The Freak” Munson’s driveway while his chest and head ached from the blows they took only minutes ago. He sighed as he got out of the Camaro and stepped into the dinghy trailer. Wayne wasn’t home, but that was a bit of a relief if Billy was being honest.

Eddie was lying shirtless on his couch, a cigarette hanging from his lips as he flipped through the pages of his newest campaign when he heard the door open. He paused a moment before looking at the door, breathing a sigh of relief that it was only Billy. “You scared the shit outta me man. Give a guy some warning next time, eh?”

Billy shrugged. It was the best apology Eddie was gonna get. “Go get a shirt and bring the weed. I don’t wanna be stuck inside so we’re gonna go for a drive.”

Eddie nodded. It was often that this happened. Billy would come over and smoke with him. Eddie was glad for the company and hardly charged Billy anymore since his presence was more than enough. He pulled a shirt over his head and grabbed the jar. He may have liked Billy a little more than he should have. He was always thankful for those lingering touches they shared once Billy was practically over the moon. He wouldn’t say anything though. He didn’t want to ruin what they had.

He followed the blonde out to his beloved Camaro and took his place in the passenger seat. The drive was mostly silent save the background noise the radio provided, but it was peaceful at the same time. He just admired Billy’s side profile while the male’s eyes were too trained on the road ahead to notice. It wasn;t long before he noticed that they had stopped at Lovers’ Lake.

Eddie chuckled, a tease slipping into his voice even though he really wished the answer would be yes. “Lovers’ Lake, eh? Got something you wanna tell me, big boy?”

He merely got an eye roll from the other teen. Neither were aware of how badly they wanted to hear and say the same words.”Shut your mouth and light one already, will ya?”

A soft sigh breezed past the brunette’s lips, a slight pain pulling at his chest. He did as he was asked however, lighting the blunt and passing it to Billy so he could have the first hit. It wasn’t long before they were both laid out on the hood of the Camaro. Billy stared up at the stars while Eddie gazed at Billy. Before Eddie really registered what he was about to do, his hand had already come up and brushed away the soft blonde curls that obstructed his view of Billy’s face. Piercing blue eyes turned his way, pupils blown wide. Eddie was sure his own weren’t much different.

Before Eddie could whisper an apology, Billy rested his cheek into his calloused palm. The brunette couldn’t help but compare it to the likeliness of a cat. Perhaps that’s what Billy was. A stray cat, wary of all who come to close until someone weasels their way past his walls and into his trust. Slowly, he inched forward and pressed his lips to the corner of Billy’s. He lingered there for a moment, his smile growing as Billy chased after him for another, longer kiss.

So that’s what he got. Eddie kissed Billy, long pecks before they got bolder. Their bodies melted into one another, trying to get as close as they could despite the cloth barrier between them. Eddie all but devoured the noises his blonde companion made as he lowered his lips to press against his neck. Slowly, he got braver and began marking Billy’s shoulders and neck, paying special attention to his pulse. He stopped however when he popped the button’s of Billy’s shirt and caught sight of the deep bruise that sat beneath his right pectoral.

“Billy…” The blonde turned away from Eddie’s searching gaze. “Billy, what happened..?”

“It’s nothing, don’t worry about them,” he deflected.

“Them? There’s more?” Eddie moved to pop more buttons, though he feared what he’d find.

Billy pulled away from him, covering his chest once more. “Don’t worry about it, Munson. It’s not worth getting into. It’s my own fault.”

Eddie wasn’t sure how to react. So he didn’t think about it. He just let his emotions take over. Billy was pulled close against his chest. “You can talk to me Billy,” he ran a tender hand through the blonde curls. “I care about you, and I want to know what’s wrong. I want to help you.”

Billy wasn’t sure what it was about those words, maybe the true sincerity, maybe the love that dripped from every letter. Maybe it was both. No matter what it was, it struck through the armored walls he had built up for years as if it were water and hit him like a freight train.

Billy cried.

And cried.

And cried some more.

He released the tears he had held since he was just a kid, when his mom left. He released the tears he held every time his father hit him. He released all the tears he held from the wounds that were scars now.

He just cried.

He cried into Eddie, holding onto him like he would float away if he didn’t.

Eddie found tears spilling over his own eyes. Here, the King of Hawkins High, the Kegstand King, Mr. Popular, was just a broken man. A scared and scarred man. But most importantly, he was the man Eddie loved. That love didn’t waver as he held Billy close, cooing gently into his ear as if he was a child.

Billy wondered when he would wake up. Surely it was too good to be true, right? He didn’t deserve this love. He didn’t deserve this kindness. He didn’t deserve an angel when he was the devil. He could only bring shade to such a world of sunshine. But he couldn’t let go. Not yet.

They stayed there for hours, watching the sun rise over the treeline. Eddie drove Billy back to his own house and led the blonde into his bedroom. The brunette took his time to lay his broken lover onto the bed and press a gentle kiss to each scar that marred his gorgeous flesh. To spread his sunny warmth across the expanse of the barren field of Billy’s heart until the grass grew vibrant green and fragrant wildflowers peppered the scars of the land. He spread the sunshine until he banished the demons and darkness to a place where they could be tended to later and perhaps never be heard from again.

But for now, Eddie shared his sunshine so Billy didn’t have to be alone in the darkness.

When Wayne came in to check on Eddie later, he smiled from ear to ear.

Why?

.
.
.

Because Eddie found the moon to his sun.
