"I'm pregnant."
Silence stretches between the two of them. Her announcement hangs in the air.
Rory knows it is the absolute last thing her mother expected to hear on her wedding day. She knows that it was going to take time for everyone to process the news but she couldn't keep it to herself for one more minute.
She was going to be a mother and she'd never needed her own mother more in her entire life.
And she could not stand the silence for one more single second.
"You have to say something, Mom! No one uses as many words to make a single point than you but I tell you that I'm having a baby and you turn into a mute? I can't believe you have nothing to say on the subject of being a grandmother! Mom, I have never needed to talk to you more in my whole life. Please, Mom, if you don't start talking I don't what I'm going—"
"Okay. Okay." Lorelai began as she reached out and pulled her into a side hug. Rory rested her head on top of her shoulder.
"Sorry I went silent on you. It's just such a huge surprise. You know that my motto is the same as the boy scouts, be prepared but I don't think the boy scouts ever had to be prepared to get married and become a grandmother on the same day."
She laughed. "I doubt that is one of their merit badges."
Rory calmed her breathing. Her heart stopped pounding in her chest.
"Have you told Logan?"
She was so surprised by the question that she immediately sat up straight.
"How did you know Logan is the father? I mean it could--"
Lorelai sighed as she tenderly pushed the hair away out of her eyes then shook her head but in a loving manner.
"No, it couldn't sweetie. Rory, I might not like the type of relationship the two of you have been having as of late but I have never questioned how much you love each other."
Rory couldn't stop the shy smile the spread across her face at the mention of loving Logan but then she remember the sad reality.
"He's marrying Odette. It's the dynastic plan."
Lorelai shook her head and brushed the hair from her face once more which had that comforting effect only a mother's touch could provide. It hit her even harder that she was going to be a mother in eight months.
"Baby, he's not going to marry that girl. If he was, it definitely would've happened already. Don't you get it yet?"
"What?"
"Rory, he's waiting on you. He's waiting for you to be ready for him because he's been ready for a life with you for ten years. Besides, if that really were the dynastic plan then there's no way he'd be allowed to drag his feet like he has, he's tried asking you to share his life and you weren't ready at the time. So the question is, are you ready now?"
She sighed in response as a few tears leaked from her eyes. Rory wasn't sure if it were hormones or the words coming from her mother but she couldn't help it.
"But what it's just like with Dad? You know, he's not ready for fatherhood."
This made her mother smirk and chuckles a little, "No sixteen year old, girl or guy, is ready for parenthood. We were teenagers fooling around, if we didn't have you then your Dad and I would've lost touch decades ago. Did I love him? Sure, kind of like the way you love Dean for being a person who helped shape who you are..." Lorelai paused. "Rory, your relationship and love with Logan is completely different than your father & I. Don't compare Logan to your father, it's not fair to him & don't let the sins of your father rob you or your child of a future with Logan. He's not your father, sweetie. He's not Christopher. You have to tell him, give him a chance."
She nodded.
"So what do you think he'll say when I tell him?"
"I think he's going to ask you what you want to do and Rory, he's always going to leave it up to you. I think that's why he's been in this affair with you… if he can't have all of you then he was just going to settle for whatever piece of you that you were willing to give him. It's also why he hasn't asked for more, the last time he did... you rejected it."
"I didn't! I just meant... we were too young."
Lorelai smiled, "I know that, but I think he took that as if you didn't want to marry him then... what would make you ever want to marry him? I think he also regretted walking away which is how you have found yourselves in this unfortunate stalemate of an affair, both too scared of losing what you do have to admit you're ready to have it all."
Rory smiled as she wiped her tears away, "I love him so much. More than anyone else. It killed me to walk away from him."
Lorelai nodded down to her stomach knowing what was inside now.
"I think fate has always had different plans for you two and you're not scared teenagers not even finished with high school thinking babies are years down the road. You're adults, in your thirties, a much more appropriate time in life to have a baby, not that I have ever regretted you. You two are about to be parents and you wanted each other longer, loved each other long before this happened unlike your father and I."
She nodded looking around at the spectacular wedding Luke gave her mother instead of the traditional wedding ceremony.
"You know this is what Logan would do for me. He has done things, in fact, done things like this, in this very town, for me. I didn't tell you but a couple months ago, he should up here with the rest of the Life & Death Brigade, pulling out every stop just like the first Life & Death Brigade event I ever attended. I think I literally fell in love with him the moment he took my hand and we jumped off that tower In less than a minute, I was in love when my feet hit the ground and it never stopped, if anything it's only gotten stronger."
"Again, nothing like your father and I. He's not your Christopher."
Rory nodded, "No, he's not. He's my Logan and I'm his Ace."
"Then go to London and get your guy."
Rory stood up. She looked around and saw Luke standing in the distance walking toward the two of them.
She turned toward her mother with a worried expression.
"Which one of us is going to tell him about the baby?" She mused, knowing Luke was much more of a Dad than her own father.
However, when it came to her dating and relationships, his over protective nature had still not dissipated despite her being a fully grown adult... just like any good actual Dad would be overprotective of their little girl. Deep in her heart, Rory knew that her mother was right. Logan was nothing like her father, that their relationship, and their love couldn't compared to the strained relationship that existed between her mother and biological father for so many reasons but ultimately, because no one's life was an inevitable walk in the footsteps of your parents.
Rory was pregnant at a completely different age than her mother and the father was the love of her life. Logan never wanted to carry out any dynastic plans or the machinations that his father and family had for him.
The time to start being Rory and Logan, for themselves, was now.
"I will. You have more important things to do." Lorelai answered then waved her off.
Rory walked back toward the house after she watched her mother and Luke in a tight embrace in the middle of the street that she'd run down with Logan when he'd gathered everybody to come cheer her up.
She took out her phone and swiped the first contact in her favorites.
It rang twice before she heard his voice.
"Ace?" Logan asked with concern and love in his voice. "Is something wrong? What is it? What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong, relax, but we need to talk about...so much and it should be done face to face so I'm going to come see you. I'm going to be the next flight I can-"
"Wait, you're coming to see me today to talk? All the way in London? Rory, please... you need to tell me what is going on... please."
She didn't know what did it, her own emotions or the gentleness to his delivery of that last word.
Rory sighed, "Okay, I wanted to do this face to face but um, Logan, I'm pregnant and it's yours, we're having a child but I don't just want to be co-parents—"
"Don't come here." Logan interrupted which made her heart sink into her stomach.
Maybe her mother was wrong and Logan was exactly like her father.
"What? Why?"
"I'm leaving right now. I'm coming to you and you're right, we have a lot to talk about because I don't want to just co-parent... Rory, you have to know I have always my future to be you."
Rory's heart soared back into life in chest at Logan's fierce tone and conviction.
"Logan, I know it took me a long time to figure it out but that's all I want, too." She said with happy tears streaming down her face.
"I love you Ace" Logan replied and she could just hear the smile on his face as he said, "See you soon."
They hung up and Rory finished her walk home to await him.
Logan was his own man… and she knew was going to be a better father than hers because he wasn't her Christopher.
