The moment she’d begun her Assessment, she’d known her fate in her bones.
His kill, the first of two in his Assessment, had been his little sister, Caroline, all of fifteen years old. She should have known that tale to be the warning it was.
Because she held the knife and stared into the eyes of her brother’s son, an innocent, staring up at her with wide eyes and a smile, and she killed him, slowly, painfully, like they said she should.
And then a girl, sobbing and terrified, and she stopped. She stopped, and turned the knife on herself.
