Luz has planned the perfect date to propose to Amity.

Chapter Text

“This is gonna be the greatest date in the history of dates! This’ll blow your socks off Blight!” Luz excitedly exclaimed as she led her girlfriend through the Bonesborough market.

“Well, I hope it’s not too long because I need to read to the kids at noon, remember?”

“Oh I absolutely remember. That’s part of the date!”

“Oh boy. What do you have planned for me, Noceda?”

“If I told you it would ruin the surprise.” Amity smiled at her girlfriend’s antics. “Besides, I already told you it will be the greatest date of all time!”

“Luz, any date with you is the greatest date in the world. Just being with you is more than enough.”

“Aww, Amity, you’re gonna make me cry. We haven’t even gotten to the actual date part yet.”

“Well then, lead the way.” Amity motioned for Luz to lead the way. Luz instead reached out her hand towards Amity. She accepted it and the two continued walking hand-in-hand.

The first item on Luz’s to-do list was breakfast. The couple walked into their favorite restaurant for a nice, peaceful meal. They talked about their palismen and how rambunctious they were: Luz had a bat palsman named Bruce. They talked about their jobs: both were teachers at Hexside now, Luz teaching glyphs, Amity abominations. They talked about certain kids that were causing trouble, what new theories and concepts they were teaching, pretty much anything school related.

“Hey, I have a surprise for you,” Amity said. Luz got excited at the prospect of a present. “Close your eyes. Hold out your hands.” Luz did as she was told. Amity spun a spell circle and summoned a photograph. She placed it in Luz’s hands. “You can open your eyes now.” Luz did so and marveled.

It was a picture of her and Amity from when they were still in Hexside. Luz was wearing Eda’s grudgby jacket and Amity her abomination uniform. The two wrapped their arms around each other with huge smiles, Amity flashing the peace sign.

“Oh man! I haven’t seen this in years! This was when we were, what, 15?”

“Yeah, for our one-year anniversary.”

“Wow. Almost 10 years ago. Thank you, Amity. I’m gonna keep this if you don’t mind.”

“Not at all.”

The two continued chatting about random topics while enjoying their meal. Eventually they finished, left a handsome tip for the servers, and walked out the restaurant. It was time for Amity to go to the library to read to the kids. She loved teaching about abominations, but she wouldn’t give up reading to kids for the world. The two walked up to the large door, holding hands still.

“So. What do you have planned now?”

“Now, I am going to help you read to the kids!” Luz shouted.

Amity slightly grimaced. “I don’t know Luz.”

“Oh come on! I do the best monster voices,” Luz said in her best monster voice. She gave Amity those large, pleading puppy dog eyes and Amity couldn’t resist.

“Ok, fine.” Luz jumped for joy. “But no fire this time,” Amity quickly added.

“Come on, that was one time!” Luz complained.

“I mean it Luz,” Amity said, having trouble hiding her smile.

“You got it Miss Blight,” Luz said while shooting finger guns. Luz subconsciously admitted to herself that she was calling Amity Blight so much because it wouldn’t be long until she had a new last name. The two smiled and walked into the library.

That day the couple decided to read The Good Witch Azura to the kids for the first time. Amity narrated while Luz acted out the scenes. Amity had to admit, Luz did have the best monster voices. The kids were absolutely overjoyed. They had never had so much fun reading. The kids laughed every time Luz over exaggerated a monster’s roar, even Amity caught herself laughing a few times, though she never dropped her smile the entire time. She was so lucky to have Luz in her life.

Eventually story time ended and the kids had to leave. They all cheered and thanked Luz and Amity for reading to them. The parents thanked the two for being so great with them. As the last of the kids left, Luz whispered into Amity’s ears, “You know, you’d be an awesome mom.”

“Hey, I’m not the only one who helped today.”

“True, but that doesn’t change what I said. You would be an awesome mom, Amity.”

“Maybe.” Amity thought back to her own mother. The terrible things she said, the awful things she did to not just Amity, but Edric and Emira as well. She feared that she would become her one day, but she knew deep down and with Luz’s reassurance that she was nothing like Odalia. She would be better than her. She IS better than her. “Speaking of kids, what would you want to name yours?” Luz was about to speak when Amity held up her finger and added, “And don’t say Azura. That is off the table.”

Luz slightly deflated from that statement but continued. “What about…Liam?”

“That’s fine, I guess. What about Cassandra? Or Cassie for short?”

The two continued spouting out names for several minutes until Luz came up with the perfect name. “How about Sara?”

Amity smiled. “It’s perfect.”

The two finished cleaning the Kid’s Corner and walked out the library. “Where to next?” Amity asked.

“I hope you have your swimsuit because we are going to the beach!”

“As a matter of fact…” Amity spun a spell circle and her clothes instantly transformed into her swimsuit, “I do.” Luz stood in silence at the mention of those two words, so incredibly impatient to hear Amity say those words to her. “Uh, Luz?”

“What? Oh, sorry. Spaced out there.”

“Like what you see?” Amity asked with a teasing smile.

“I’ll have you know that I always think you’re beautiful, Amity.” Luz crossed her arms and looked away. Amity stood unmoving with the same teasing smirk on her face. Luz opened one eye and said, “Ok, you do look very hot right now.”

Amity walked over to Luz and kissed her on the cheek. “Thank you.” Amity proceeded to walk down the stairs, leaving Luz up top, frozen in place.

She rubbed her cheek in the spot Amity kissed. “I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of that,” Luz said to herself.

“You coming?” Amity shouted.

“Yes!” Luz ran down the steps to catch up and the two walked through town, down to the beach.

Of course, it would be nice if they could actually swim in the water without their skin melting off, but the point was they were just relaxing at the beach. The two laid out a large towel on the sand, Amity morphed an abomination into an umbrella, and the two lay on the beach relaxing.

Both let out contented sighs. Luz broke the silence first. “You know, you should move that umbrella. You really need to work on your tan.”

Amity turned on her side and looked at Luz. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing. Just that you could use a tan.”

“And I suppose you don’t need a tan?”

“Nope!” Luz smugly smiled, annunciating the p sound. “I have the best tan in the entire Isles.” Just then, Luz felt sand land on her. She looked up and saw Amity had picked up a handful and tossed it at her. “Oh. So that’s how it’s gonna be then?” Luz’s face turned competitive, but before she could retaliate Amity through another handful and leapt off the towel. “Oh no you don’t! Get back here!”

Luz picked up several handfuls of her own and began chucking them at Amity. “Get over here Blight! I have a present for you!”

Amity shouted back, “Really? I have a present for you too!” She spun a spell circle and created a giant sand abomination twice her size and commanded it to engage Luz.

“Hey! Not fair! We never said magic was allowed!”

“Never said magic wasn’t allowed!”

“Ok then!” Luz pulled out her glyphs and attacked the sand monster. She threw fire at it to blow holes in it, hurled ice to freeze it, and finally sprouted vines to smash it to pieces. Just when she was about to celebrate, however, Luz was pulled down into the sand up to her waist, but her arms were still free. “Hey!”

“Looks like I win, Noceda,” Amity celebrated with a smug grin.

Luz struggled in the sand. “Never! I haven’t surrendered yet!”

Amity simply laughed. “Ok. How about this then?” She lowered herself into the sand so that she was eye level with Luz. She then reached out, grabbed Luz’s face and kissed her. They both closed their eyes and leaned into it, the same passion as their very first. The two pulled away with big smiles on their faces.

“Ok, I surrender.”

“Let’s call it a draw.” The two laughed. “So. Anything left to do?”

Luz looked out to the horizon and saw the sun was setting. “Yes. There is one last thing. But first, can you lift us out of the sand?”

“Oh right, sorry.” Amity lifted the two out, sand pouring out of their suits.

“Could you also maybe remove the sand? This stuff is not fun.” Amity twirled another spell circle and they were both sand free. “Whew. Much better. Now, let’s change back. We’re going to a special place.”

The two changed back into the outfits they wore before the beach. The two held hands again as Luz led Amity all the way up the cliffside and to their special spot: the Grom Tree.

“Welcome to the most romantic spot on the Isles.”

“You say that like I haven’t been here before,” Amity teased.

“You have?” Luz asked with mock hurt. “Ah shoot. There goes the surprise I had. Guess we’ll have to go back home…” she turned to walk when Amity put her hand in Luz’s chest.

“Uh uh. You’re not getting away that easy.”

Luz chuckled. “You’re right.” Luz held out her elbow for Amity to lock with. Amity accepted and they walked all the way to the cliff’s edge. They looked out to the horizon and into the setting sun.

“Wow. It’s so beautiful, Luz.”

Luz looked at Amity. “It really is,” she said with love. To this day Luz questioned what she did to deserve Amity. Someone so kind, and passionate, and so loving, someone Luz wanted to spend the rest of her life with. Luz left that question for another day. Now it was time to ask THE question. She reached into her pocket and…nothing.

Luz scrounged through her pocket. Still nothing. She patted her pockets, her pants, her coat, desperately trying to find the ring but it was nowhere to be found. Amity noticed Luz panicking. “Luz? Is everything all right?” she asked with concern.

“Yeah,” Luz answered unconvincingly. “I just…forgot something.” Just then Luz realized something. She smacked her forehead. “I forgot it at the house.” Luz couldn’t believe it. The best possible moment to ask the love of her life her hand in marriage and Luz forgot the damn ring.

“Are you ok, Luz?”

Luz let out a defeated sigh. “Yeah.” She pulled out the portal key and pressed the eye to summon the portal to the Human Realm. “I’m really sorry, Amity, but I forgot something at Mami’s house. Just wait right here. Don’t move. I’ll be right back.” Luz lunged into the portal and looked back at Amity.

“Ok. Try not to take too long.” Amity stood there and waited.

Luz ran into her mom’s house. She rushed up the stairs to her old bedroom and quickly searched through the drawers. “Where is it? Where is it?!” She continued rummaging until she heard a familiar voice.

“Are you looking for this?” Luz turned around and saw Vee in her human form holding up the ring case. Luz lunged forward and grabbed the box.

“Oh my gosh, where did you find it?”

“Just sitting here on your desk. You probably wouldn’t have forgotten it if you cleaned your room every once in a while.”

“Ha ha. Very fun.” Luz tucked the ring into her pocket. “Thank you so much, Vee. You’re a lifesaver.”

“Don’t mention it. Now get back out there and propose!”

“Don’t have to tell me twice.” Luz sprinted out of the room. “Love you Vee! Love you mom!”

“Tell Amity I said hi!” Vee shouted back.

Luz sprinted down the stairs and out the door. She came running up on the portal and…nothing. Where the portal was previously open there was nothing. “Huh? That’s weird. I could have sworn I left the portal open.” Luz pulled out the portal key and pressed the eye. Luz waited. Nothing happened. Luz furrowed her brow as she pressed the eye again, and again nothing happened. She pressed the eye repeatedly and still nothing happened.

“No. No, no, no, no. This can’t be happening!” She kept pressing the eye over and over again, desperate for something to happen. She kept glancing at the spot where the portal would normally open, only to see nothing. “PLEASE NO!” Luz crumpled to the ground, tears streaming down her face. “WHY WON’T YOU WORK?!” she screamed as she continued pressing. She threw the key and curled in on herself, now full-on bawling.

She sat in the woods for several minutes crying. Through teary eyes and broken sobs, Luz simply said, “Amity,” and she continued sobbing well into the night.

Since this was such a sad ending, Chapter 2 will be tomorrow.
