The Dragon and the Arctic Fox

Writer's Month 2022

Jack was excited about being in San Fransokyo. He'd gotten a scholarship for the local art academy. Settling in had been easier than expected, he'd quickly befriended his roommate at the dorms, Eugene Fitzherbert. And through Eugene, met his new best friend – Eugene's girlfriend Rapunzel.

They both had more or less regular daemons. Eugene's was a white stallion named Maximus, who amusingly enough seemed to argue a lot with Eugene. Usually daemons, as the manifestation of one's soul, was in sync with their respective human. Like Rapunzel and her chameleon Pascal; the little guy was always trying to cheer her up, or helped her with projects.

"Hey, Jack," Rapunzel smiled brightly as she entered Jack and Eugene's room.

"Are you finally here to pick him up for your date?" Jack grinned cheekily. "He's been fretting over his hair for like an hour now. So annoying when he wants to look his best for you."

"Aw," Rapunzel clasped her hands together. "Like he doesn't always look his best."

"Ba—abe, I just always want things to be special for you, because you are special to me."

Eugene exited the bathroom, a broad grin on his lips. He approached her to wrap his arms around her and pull Rapunzel into a kiss. So cute. Disgusting to watch. Jack rolled his eyes.

"Up you go, Jack," Eugene motioned. "Come on."

"...To your... date?" Jack frowned doubtfully at that. "No, thank you."

"It's not a date. I told you earlier, you gotta listen better," Eugene rolled his eyes. "Merida wants to introduce us to her girlfriend. You're invited too."

Oh. Huh. Okay. Jack grabbed his blue hoodie and put it on before following the other two outside. They headed off campus, to the point that Jack fully had to rely on them. He'd never been to this part of the city before. Though it was pretty. Finally did they reach their destination, a cute little café called the Lucky Cat, according to the letters on the window.

"Hey, guys! Over here! Over here!"

Merida's thick Scottish accent had been something that Jack really needed to get used to at first. The redhead sat next to another girl, with black wavy hair and soft, brown skin. On the stranger's lap sat an absolutely adorable pink pig. He'd already seen Merida's soul-animal Angus outside, where Eugene had also parked Maximus. Horses were just a bit too big for a small café.

"Mo, these are my friends. Rapunzel, Eugene and Jack. Guys, this is Moana."

"And this is my daemon, Pua," Moana added, pointing down at the pig in her lap. "Nice to meet you. Merida talks so much about you, I've been looking forward to meeting you all."

Jack looked down at his own daemon skittering between his feet. "That's Frosty. And nice to meet you too. It really is 'Mo this' and 'Mo that' these days. Good to have a face to the name."

Jack, Eugene and Rapunzel sat down with the two girls and Jack noticed the way Moana and Merida were holding hands. Another cute couple. The joys of being single. Rapunzel and Eugene had barely introduced themselves when someone else joined them and pulled the chair right next to Jack out to sit down next to him. Immediately, Jack's attention was stolen. Not even by the guy himself, but by his big daemon. A pitch-black dragon with green eyes. Never before had Jack seen a mythical daemon in person – and he was so cute!

"That's my friend Hiccup and his daemon Toothless," offered Moana.

Only at her words did Jack turn to actually look at the person. And oh. Handsome. Tall, brunette guy with cute little braids in his hair, a light scruff on his face. Nice. Jack bit his lips. Well, it seemed that going out today had absolutely been worth it.

Hiccup wasn't extremely social, he was always buried in his projects at SFIT, but sometimes he got bullied to go out with his friends. And he was glad he let Moana convince him to meet her girlfriend and said girlfriend's friends, because among them had been a very adorable pastel punk named Jack with white-dyed hair and a beautiful arctic fox daemon named Frosty.

"Hey, Jack," Hiccup smiled, as he always did when seeing Jack. "Hey, Frosty."

The little fox sat on the table top and tilted his head at Hiccup. Very cute. As cute as his human. Jack reached out to ruffle Frosty's fur, having the fox nudge his head into Jack's hand. Hiccup had never been jealous of a daemon before, but considering how much Jack cuddled Frosty, Hiccup couldn't help a bit of jealousy to bloom in his chest. He wanted Jack cuddles too. Jack clearly gave great cuddles and his fingers certainly would feel amazing in Hiccup's hair too. Toothless cooed.

"Hey, Tooth," Jack grinned and picked a piece of bacon off his own plate. "Here, boy."

And now Hiccup got jealous of his own daemon, because Toothless got hand-fed by Jack. While the dragon happily munched on the bacon, Frosty climbed on top of Toothless' head to curl together, looking like a funny furred hat on the dragon. The picture made both humans laugh softly.

"Our daemons are getting along great," Hiccup commented after a moment.

Jack reached out with his leg and kicked the chair opposite him away from the table in invitation. Hiccup wasn't going to decline that, he'd had too big a crush on Jack for too many weeks now.

"We are too, aren't we?" Jack offered a small, teasing smile.

"I, uh... I mean, yeah," Hiccup tried to hide his blush.

Toothless rolled his eyes annoyed and then, with no remorse, started pushing Hiccup's chair around the round little table. The chair legs screeched over the floor until Hiccup sat right next to Jack. Frosty on Toothless' head uncurled to watch the humans curiously, looking nearly mischievous. Much like his human. Jack was easily the most mischievous person Hiccup had ever met.

"I think that your daemon wants to tell us something," noted Jack amused. "Which means that you want to maybe tell me something, since he's an extension of your soul...?"

Oh boy. Hiccup's face was on fire and he awkwardly rubbed his neck. But there was no mockery on Jack's face, just honest curiosity and maybe a light blush too? Okay. Time to actually do this.

"I was thinking, maybe... I could take you out? On a date? Sometime?"

Frosty chirped loudly in agreement, beating Jack to the punch. "Yeah. I'd... like that."

Both daemons looked pleased by that, settling down on the floor in peace. Little matchmakers.

Notes:

Been bouncing this prompt around in my head for a while but in the end thought it was a nice way of bringing Toothless as a proper dragon into the modern setting!
