Work Text:
Oikawa was so tired. His head kept falling from where it rested against the rocking chair and with each snap downwards had him blinking into focus again and again.
He wished he could say he lost count, but he hadn’t. 12 times. A total of 12 times, he had been up and out of bed to come seek out the why’s of his baby’s cries and wish he understood why Tobio was so restless.
12 times, it had all been the same. First came the crying that only built in sound, secondly came him checking on Tobio which was usually followed by a rush to the bathroom or a bottle or a cuddle, but Oikawa honestly didn’t understand why Tobio was so emotional that night.
“ Shh , Tobs. You're okay, I’m right here,” Oikawa whispered, bouncing the boy up and down lightly on the rocking chair that rocked them gently like a brush of air.
Once Tobio settled and was sleeping soundlessly, Oikawa would place him back into his bed and tuck him in before going back to bed for a few minutes before the crying would start back up.
Iwaizumi didn’t even stir once, and Oikawa was too tired to be pissed at the male for sleeping through all the racked because he wished he could have done the same.
It was a rinse, wash, repeat progress over and over and as the sunrise peaked over the horizon, shinning through the glass window Oikawa had gotten up another 5 addition times in hopes to sooth his baby back into dream land
The coffee burned hot in his hands, helping to heat him up on the inside with each sip.
Oikawa wasn’t much of a coffee drinker, but after the night he had, he couldn’t help but chug the harsh and bitter liquid that had the magical property of kick-starting the brain into overdrive down his throat.
“Woah , Tooru slow down,” Akaashi warned from across the table, his hand reaching out and lightly tapping the cup away from Oikawa’s greedy lips.
Oikawa mumbled but obeyed, the cup coming to rest on the table, now 3 forth’s empty, “You don’t understand Keiji. It’s bad!” he whined, head bashing hard against the table’s surface, gaining the attention of a mother’s group a table away.
Akaashi smiled awkwardly at them before turning back to Oikawa, “You're being dramatic,” he scoffed.
Oikawa lifted his gaze, eye’s set harshly onto Akaashi from under his cap. The other had the audacity to scoff at his sufferings while taking such precise and gentle sips of his tea.
“I thought you would understand,” Oikawa huffs, straightening up in his seat to glare at the women still looking at him, “you're a ‘mama’ too.”
“I don’t know what you would mean, Hinata is such a good boy,” Akaashi praised, eyes finding the corner their two children were playing in and smiled brightly, “his a little cinnamon roll compared to your–”
“To my what?? My little bossy, stubborn and strong-willed toddler with no regard to emotion unless he wants something?”
“Now, now Kawa you're just describing yourself,” Akaashi remarked looking back at his friend.
Oikawa chose that moment to rip his cap off from his head, and it was almost satisfying to watch those teal eyes in front of him grow, gawking at Oikawa’s appearance.
“Oh wow, you weren’t kidding when you said it was bad. You look like shit!” Akaashi exclaimed.
Oikawa rolled his eyes, “oh wow, thanks.”
“You know what I mean,” Akaashi said
“Did I mention I feel like it as well?” Oikawa asked, tilting his head to the side
“Na, I think you left that very important detail out,” Akaashi smiled, the glint of pure satisfaction at Oikawa’s misery shining through his eyes. “Motherhood not treating you well?” he wondered out loud.
“It’s treating me well enough,” Oikawa huffed, resting his head in his palm to watch as Tobio chases Hinata up and down the wall, a figure in hand, held up high, reminding him of the Statue of Liberty.
The statue standed for freedom, but in no way did Oikawa feel that way. The clutches of parenthood holding him tightly with duty and responsibility for a tiny child that was his.
“I thought you said, quote,” Akaashi said, quoting the air, “ ‘parenthood can suck ass’ .”
“Oh no, not at all. Don’t know what you're talking about,” Oikawa began, sarcasm rolling over the tip of his tongue, “it is so beautiful that I wouldn’t change it for the world. I get to tuck my baby into bed every night and say ‘ “see you in the morning” ’ and we both laugh and somehow see each other 17 more times until sunrise.”
Akaashi looked like a bomb hit his face, all features spread further than they normally would, eyes wide and mouth agape, “You're joking, 17?”
“That exact amount,” Oikawa confirmed, his dark shadows only proving his point further.
“Well shit,” Akaashi whispered, their children’s laughs filling the silence in between them. “Where was Iwaizumi?” Akaashi asked after a moment, and Oikawa scoffed.
“Where do think?” he asked, “Sleeping right next to me while I did the 17 ups and down.”
Akaashi chose that moment to look over at Tobio, “how does he have that much energy while you have such little?”
Oikawa shrugged his shoulders, “the little monster thrives of his ‘mama’s’ sufferings.”
“We’ve ordered,” Iwaizumi stated walking towards, Bokuto at his side, “the line was pretty long.”
“Did you get me another coffee?” Oikawa asked, perching higher in his seat at the thought of another coffee to boost him through the rest of the day.
Iwaizumi gave him a look, “what do you mean, did I buy you another coffee? Of course, I didn’t. It’s not good for someone to drink too much caffeine, at least in one go.”
Damn Iwaizumi and his health degree along with all the facts and everything, because honest they could all go down the drain with how tired Oikawa was right now running on nothing but adrenaline that was quickly fading.
Oikawa took a deep breath and then another to calm the hot fire building his stomach at his husband’s audacity to speak like he was. Iwaizumi had the luxury of sleeping all the way through the night and hadn’t woken up 17 times due to their crying baby.
Iwaizumi’s eyes softened, and he took a step closer to Oikawa and took him gently by the shoulders, beginning to thread the pads of his thumbs into the curve and working his fingers over the back of Oikawa’s neck.
Oikawa groaned lowly, leaning backwards into those powerful and wonders of hands.
“I’m sorry,” Iwaizumi apologises, “You can sleep when we get home, alright?”
Oikawa only nodded.
It wasn’t long before their food was brought out and the kids were called over to eat.
Oikawa remanded silent for the rest of lunch, eyes barely blinking awake from how tied he was becoming by the second now that his stomach was filling with food.
“Mama?”
Oikawa’s eyes blinked awake, and he snapped his eyes to find his little one staring at him with those innocent wide puppy dog eyes.
“Yes?” Oikawa yawned.
“I t-wired,” Tobio told him, rubbing at his eyes with his scrunched up fists.
Oh, you are? Oikawa thought, mind swirling down a spiral of heartfelt emotions that would probably break his relationship with Tobio is he let them be said out loud, and whose fault is that?!
But instead Oikawa took a deep breath, “I bet you are baby. You had quite the rough night last night, didn’t you?”
Tobio nodded, “so did you, ma. I Swory.”
Oikawa’s heart swelled at his little one’s thoughtfulness and smiled, leaning forward and kissing Tobio on the top of the head, which cause Tobio to giggle and grip onto Oikawa’s pointer finger.
“You can sleep when we get home. Okay?” Oikawa told him, “not too much longer.”
Tobio pouted but nodded, not letting go of Oikawa’s finger as he continued to eat his cut up egg muffin his dad had cut up for him.
Internally, Oikawa screamed at how cute his child was, suddenly forgetting all about what his little monster had put him through last night into the early hour’s of the morning. All forgiven and forgotten at his child's switch in demeanour due to his overtired state of self.
The moment they crossed the entrance into their apartment, Oikawa was passing a drowsy Tobio of into Iwaizumi’s arms.
Iwaizumi stood there holding Tobio under the arms awkwardly up in the air, “what?” he asked confusedly towards Oikawa who was quite to retreat.
“He’s all your’s,” Oikawa smiled sweetly, already by their bedroom’s door, “good luck.”
“Wait Tooru,” Iwaizumi called after him in a panic, but Oikawa had already slammed the door shut the exact moment Tobio choose to burst into tears due to being overtired.
Oikawa had been worried about his baby boy, but since Iwiazumi was fully rested from getting the privilege to sleep all the way through last night, Oikawa had no doubt Iwaizumi could deal with their overtired boy. Who by tomorrow would wake up back on schedule since when it came to obeying ‘papa’s’ words he was so good, unlike when it came to obeying his ‘mama’s’ words.
The moment Oikawa passed off into dreamland, the crying had stopped, and he faded into a place where volleyballs were flying over head and Tobio was cheering for his mama on an array of colourful clouds while his husband groan and moaned over the chores Oikawa hated doing.
BONUS
Oikawa woke up the next morning fully rested to find Tobio curled up under his arm, holding onto the same finger he was gripping at lunch. When he lifted his eyes, he found his husband on the other side of Tobio, sleeping soundless.
Both his boy’s sleeping soundlessly and Oikawa smiled knowing he would never swap them for the world because they were his.
His family, now and forever.
