“Please, tell me…”
“What?”
“Why did you choose the top bunk again?”
Tally chuckles and burrows further into Sarah’s neck, the vibrations tickling her skin.
“I told you, Rae chose for me. Also,” she pulls back and straddles the other woman, “how was I supposed to know…” a kiss on swollen lips, “I would have to sneak you in my room…” Sarah’s hands pinned above her head, “and fuck you in my bed?”
Sarah moans into their kiss, the contact sending sparks anew. She does her best not to give in to what her body is screaming her to.
“You’re not making it very easy for me to leave right now.”
“Maybe I don’t want you to leave.”
Sarah smiles, the very smile that Tally has found is reserved just for her.
“You know that I don’t either. But I have to, my love.”
Tally moves to the side and off Sarah’s body, groaning into her pillow. “Fine! Go! Save the world...lead an army,” Sarah’s lips curve as she climbs down Tally’s bunk bed, “just don’t expect me to be here when you get back.”
Sarah rests her hands and chin on the bed, next to Tally’s head where she’s still lying. “And may I ask where you’ll be, my darling?” She pushes a few strands of red hair from her face.
Tally’s warm eyes find hers; she’s wearing a frown. “Okay, fine. I’ll be here, waiting for you. But you know how much I hate it when you leave me.”
Sarah extends a hand and helps Tally climb down the bed. “You know I could never leave you. Not really.”
“I know.”
Sarah places her hands on her lover’s face and kisses her deeply.
“I love you, Tally Craven. More than I ever thought possible, more than life itself. Never forget that.”
Tally’s sight gets blurry, tears blocking the way. “I love you too,” she breathes.
Sarah leans in and locks her lips with Tally’s and it tastes like home.
“What...the actual...fuck?”
Both Tally’s and Sarah’s blood turns into ice, their eyes shooting open. They never heard the door open. How did they not hear the door open?
Sarah removes her lips from Tally’s and pulls back a little just so she can see who the newest members of their company are. Raelle Collar, Abigail Bellweather, and Anacostia Quartermaine. All dumbstruck, all standing frozen, all staring at them.
Fantastic.
Sarah reacts fast.
“Seer of Truth, Knower of things unknown, wise and mighty soldier. A blessing on you, Tally Craven.”
Tally’s cheeks are on fire and she’s rooted to her spot, not even turning to see the people at the door.
Sarah, her back straight and hands clasped behind it, walks to Raelle and smiles. Her hands cup her face and she places her lips on hers. Raelle’s eyes widen but she doesn’t move a muscle.
“Healer of the ailing, Fixer of burden and pain, loyal and mighty soldier. A blessing on you, Raelle Collar.”
Sarah pulls back, smiling a little awkwardly and moves to her left. She places her hands on Abigail's face before planting a kiss on her lips.
“Formidable witch of historic blood, Blaster of the enemy, courageous and mighty soldier. A blessing on you, Abigail Bellweather.”
Abigail’s lips have remained puckered, her eyes following the woman who just kissed her. Sarah nods at her and moves to the side where Anacostia is standing, arms crossed as she witnesses the absurdity.
Sarah extends a hand to reach the Drill Sergeant, “My dau-”
“Oh hell no,” her hand is up, putting a stop to whatever was going to happen. She doesn’t even look at Sarah. She takes a step back and dips her head. “Ladies,” she says, before disappearing down the hallway.
Everyone stays put, their feet planted on the floor. Tally’s colour still matches her hair, as she has been watching the whole thing with mind-numbing dread.
Sarah walks out the door, her perfect posture back in place. “Cadets.”
And she’s gone.
The two soldiers by the door turn to look at Tally, who’s looking at anything but them. As Raelle closes the door, her movements still slow from the shock, Abigail’s voice breaks the silence.
“Thank Goddess we didn’t catch you fucking.”
