Boston Marriage

Summary:

Carson asks Greta questions about her relationship with Jo.

Work Text:

Carson and Greta are talking after returning home from the Kenosha trip.

//

“I was thinking about what you said about your previous experience with married women,” Carson says.

“Oh? What about, specifically?”

“Maybe it makes sense that you’ve had relationships with married women since you and Jo are kind of married.”

“Huh. That’s interesting. I hadn’t thought about it that way.”

“Well, Jo isn’t technically your spouse, but you are close in many of the ways that married couples are - with one major difference.”

Carson clears her throat. “I don’t mean to pry into, um, sensitive issues, but you and Jo don’t ever sleep together, right? I mean sleep, sleep together."

“You are prying, but that’s okay, Shaw.” Greta smiles and brushes a finger over one of Carson's hands. “It’s understandable that you're wondering about it. The answer is no, Jo and I aren’t together that way.”

“You’ve known Jo a long time. Were you ever together that way?”

“No. I realized early on that I was attracted to women who are very different from Jo.”

“Do you think Jo was ever attracted to you?”

“Hmmm…maybe. A long time ago.” Greta pauses and laughs. “Honestly, I think Jo knows too much about me to want that kind of relationship with me. She knows about all my problems.”

“I think you’re wonderful, Greta.”

“I think you're wonderful, too.” Greta says softly. She looks at Carson like she wants to kiss her. “Back to your question…After Jo’s grandmother kicked her out of the house, I became her family. She’s like the sister I never had."

"Did you ask about Jo because you're worried she might be jealous?" Greta says. "I can assure you, there is no reason to be worried.”

“No, I’m not worried about that. Sometimes I do wonder if Jo thinks I’m bad for you.”

“Jo appreciates that you make me happy. She just wants us to be careful.”

“Yeah, that makes sense.”
