Work Text:
You sighed as you walked into the bedroom, tiredly laying down everything you were holding and slowly pulling off your coat. Your mind ached with how bad your day was, slowly moving to sit on the edge of the bed.
The room looked relatively untouched from when you left it, causing you to assume that you got home before Childe. Your head hung low as you realized you’d be alone for a while, sniffing as you wiped your nose.
You blinked as you felt the tears start to well up, leaning back on the bed as you tried to stop the flow. Being so caught up in your emotions, you failed to notice the bedroom door open as Childe walks in.
He furrows his eyebrows when he sees you, slowly moving to you as to not scare you. You see his silhouette as he sits next to you, wiping your face as you turn to look at his concerned gaze.
“Hey, what happened? Are you alright?” His voice alone brings you so much comfort as you turn your head into the crook of his neck, hugging him as you feel him stroking your back. “It’s alright, you don’t have to tell me. It’s ok”
His worried tone makes you break down again, sobbing into him as he continues to hug you while your fingers dig into his arm. You can’t help but feel embarrassed like you’re a burden as your uncontrollable tears sink into his skin while he lovingly strokes your head.
“Don’t worry, don’t worry. I’m here. It’ll get better, I promise” His tone is filled with so much emotion as you swing your legs over his lap, hanging onto him by his shoulders as you continue to cry.
You feel so bad for crying as your face contorts into pained expressions while his embrace only gets tighter as you finally feel yourself slowly calming down. You didn’t know if it had been an eternity or a few seconds before you stopped, silently wiping your face on his shirt.
“Hey, aww. You’re gonna make my uniform dirty” You start to giggle at his teasing as you shift your weight onto his chest, pushing the both of you down onto the bed as he laughs.
His happiness makes you happy, causing you to laugh at the both of you splayed out on the bed. A sudden pang of emotion hits your chest again, making tears form as your laughter slowly dies out.
Childe was always so strong, always so well put together, he always knew what to say and what to do. You couldn’t help but feel like a dead weight compared to him, becoming self conscious at how he could ever choose you.
He had noticed your silence, and slowly readjusted himself so he was fully on the bed, laying on his side as he looked at you. His worried ocean gaze made you feel guilty again, bowing your head as he stroke your face.
“How do you do it?”
Your voice was faint and strained, it hurt so much for that one sentence as he tilted his head.
“How do you keep going when it feels like the whole universe only exists to work against you?”
His past was so heavy and dark, it made you feel guilty for even considering comparing your hardships to his own. But he just seemed to be so content, so at peace, you couldn’t help but wonder how.
His face went red as you said that, his eyes avoiding your gaze as you waited in silence. You immediately began to regret what you said, opening your mouth to apologize as he spoke.
“You simply tell the universe that it has to try harder than that”
You can’t help but smile at his words, laughing as he pulled you in for a kiss. You grab his cheeks and pull him closer, your tears staining both of your faces as he slowly pulls away.
“You just need to realize that no matter what, no matter how unfair it feels, life decided to keep you alive for a reason. If it wanted you gone, you’d be gone” He doesn’t seem to be looking at you as he says this, instead staring blankly at the ceiling as you feel your worries somehow melt away.
“How are you so good at this?” Your lighthearted joke snaps his gaze back to you, his intense eyes burning into you as he pulls you in for a hug again.
“I’m just telling you what I wish I was told. That it would get better, because hope is one of the biggest highs you could ask for” You sniff as he kisses you again, digging your head into his chest as his arm hugs your neck.
“It will get better. Maybe not easier, but better”
