A Different Beginning

Summary:

What if the kiss in 1x01 had been their first...

Based on Tori's comment from a recent interview that Kacy didn't originally have the '2 nights, 3 days' backstory.

Notes:

This will start from the scene outside Whistler's apartment and go from there. Some scenes and dialogue have been taken direct from the show but they won't always be in the same context or said by the same person so look out for those.

Kacy will be happy from chapter one and there will be no nasty surprises showing up to spoil that. We will also be reclaiming pizza and mini golf in later chapters 😉

I am well on with writing chapter four and the other three are outlined so I hope to have this finished in a few weeks.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: A Different Beginning

Chapter Text

Lucy begrudgingly succumbs to Jesse’s suggestion that she should apologise to Whistler. She has no other choice, they need DIA’s help to move forward with the case. She’d had to illegitimately use her security access to get Whistler’s address, but what’s wrong with a little espionage when it’s for the greater good. Lucy is not surprised to find that she lives in a swanky apartment building with an ocean view.

She arrives at Whistler’s building around 9pm and finds herself fidgeting through the entire elevator ride, feeling irritated that she has to be here at all and some underlying nervousness that she wasn’t expecting. Eventually making it to apartment 1204, she takes a steadying breath and knocks.

The door swings open to reveal the most beautiful woman she has ever seen. It’s still Whistler but she’s softer somehow. Casually dressed in an oversized jumper and capri pants with her hair flowing over her shoulders. Lucy is mesmerised until she looks up to see the annoyance on Whistler’s face and feels like she has had a bucket of cold water thrown over her head.

“Well look who’s here” Whistler remarks as though she’s expecting her. “Did you come by to clean up your mess and save your ass or- maybe take a swing at me?” she’s already preparing to close the door in Lucy’s face.

Lucy is so shocked by her brazenness that when she finally finds her voice she stutters “I- no no no- I um- came to apologise. I was out of line and put you in a jam. It wasn’t right or fair and I’m sorry.”

Lucy’s expression is contrite but there’s a smile there as she wills Whistler to accept the apology. Whistler still looks uncertain so Lucy amps up the smile for good measure, she knows how to utilise her charm.

Without warning, Whistler rushes forward and kisses her, nearly knocking Lucy off her feet. Lucy is too shell-shocked to respond, she could never have had this turn of events on her bingo card for today.

Whistler pulls away quickly and takes a step back, looking shocked by her own actions she starts “I’m sorry I-” but she is swiftly cut off by Lucy who jumps into action and pulls her back down into another kiss. Whistler quickly responds with fervour and wraps her arms around Lucy to pull her in closer. It’s intense but slightly awkward as Whistler angles her head right down to account for their height difference. The kiss starts to slow after what feels like hours and the two reluctantly pull apart, panting heavily, both looking at each other cautiously with slight wonderment.

Whistler is the first to break the silence, “I think maybe we should go inside, I wouldn’t want to give my neighbours any more of a show” she nervously jokes.

All Lucy can do is nod in response and follow Whistler inside.

Once they’re inside Lucy manages to gather herself and is incredulous. “What the hell was that Whistler?!”

Whistler looks sheepish, “Um, given what just happened, maybe you can call me Kate?” she suggests with a hopeful shrug.

“Fine. What the hell was that Kate?!” Lucy fires straight back.

Kate takes a deep breath, “Honestly?” she pauses “I think it was 18 months of attraction and workplace tension finally bubbling over.”

“You like me?” Lucy practically shouts in surprise. “But you’re always such a bitc- uh- no-nonsense professional, I thought you hated me?”

Kate sighs and makes her way over to the couch to sit down, leaving a gawking Lucy standing in the middle of her open plan living area. She rests her arms on her knees and looks across to Lucy, “My job isn’t easy, always having to play bad cop, charging in and putting up red tape everywhere. I had to build up the no-nonsense Whistler façade to help me get through the workday, so I don’t crumble and cave in to the desire to do everything I can to help you and your team. It makes everyone think I’m an emotionless robot but it’s only one small part of me. If you looked closer you’d have been able to see that I look at you every chance I get, I come to your desk first just so I can talk to you, even if it’s just to ask where Tennant is. I like you Lucy, and it has been killing me to try to hide it.” She looks defeated now, like she’s spilling her guts for no reason and Lucy is probably just going to laugh in her face.

Lucy is stood stock still, trying to process everything that has happened in the last few minutes. Kate takes her lack of response as rejection, she gets up and walks back towards Lucy whilst saying, “I think maybe you should go, I-”

“Wait” Lucy softly grabs her arm as she is about to walk by and stops her in her tracks. “Look at me Kate.”

Kate slowly turns to look at her. When she’s sure Kate isn’t going to run she continues, “I’m sorry for the silence, that was a lot to take in- in a good way!” she quickly reassures before Kate can get the wrong idea again. “Firstly, I want to apologise again, the way I treat you at work doesn’t make your job any easier. Secondly, I don’t think you’re bad, I think you’re amazing” she pauses to smile at Kate whose eyes have widened in shock.

“I honestly had no idea that you felt anything other than annoyance for me which made it all the more frustrating how attractive I found you because I couldn’t just hate you” Lucy jokes. “The first time you walked into the bullpen and Tennant introduced you I was in a panic; I was still fairly new to the team and trying to make a good impression but I couldn’t help but think how hot you were and I was worried I’d make a fool of myself falling all over you.”

Kate laughs, feeling joyous at this turn of events. It’s so contagious that Lucy joins in. When they stop and the silence takes over once more, Kate tentatively asks “Can I kiss you again?”

Lucy is unable to help herself and replies “That depends, have you got a box I can stand on?”

Kate looks pensive and starts looking around as though she’s taking the question seriously. Lucy shakes her head thinking how cute it is that Whistler always takes everything so literally. Deciding she’ll need to take charge, Lucy slowly pushes Kate backwards until she’s perched on the edge of her side table, reducing her height by a few inches. Lucy steps forward and rests in between Kate’s legs, “Never mind, this will do.”

She leans forward and kisses Kate, moving her hands to her shoulders as Kate’s find their way to her back. This kiss is much slower than the first but no less magical. Both women can feel the fireworks and can’t believe that it has taken them this long to do this. Lucy vocalises that thought, “All this time we could have been doing that instead of arguing with each other at work.”

“Perhaps the foreplay is what has made it so good?” Kate suggests.

Lucy scoffs, “No way, two people as hot as us would’ve had this fire from day one.”

Kate smiles, she’s always found Lucy to be hilarious but has never allowed herself to react to it before, it feels so freeing.

Lucy slowly disengages from her hold and Kate moves to stand back up to her full height. “I really hate to say this but I’ve got an early start tomorrow and I’m sure you have too. Can we pause this for now and resume very soon?”

Kate is disappointed but understands, “Yes, that would be the sensible thing to do” she responds reluctantly.

Lucy reaches up to place a soft kiss on her lips, “I’ll see you tomorrow”.

“I can’t wait” Kate returns with a smile. “Will you text me to let me know you’ve made it home safe? Let me give you my number.”

“Don’t worry I’ve already got it” Lucy says quickly as she starts backing up to the door.

Kate looks perplexed, “How?”

“You’ll never know!” Lucy calls as she walks out of the door.

The two of them stand there smiling like idiots on either side of the door for a few minutes before Lucy leaves to make her way home.

Kate gets a text 30 minutes later from an unknown number ‘I’m home. Sweet dreams Whistler.’

She quickly saves the contact as Lucy ♥ and replies ‘Goodnight Lucy.’
