Chapter Text
I was sleeping in my bed at the orphanage until my roommate and best friend shook me awake. "Wh-Wh-What do you w-want?" I asked her.
Emily smiled softly. "Well it's adoption day today so we have to get ready." Emily said.
I nodded and got up. "O-Of course a-a-adoption day not like I-I-I have much of a ch-ch-chance." I said.
Emily sighed a little. "You don't know that I'm sure someone will eventually come along Samantha." Emily said then left the room.
I walked over to a small dresser and pulled out a dark blue t-shirt and some white shorts and got dressed slipping into my pink flats and brushed out my black wavy hair then left the room and joined the other kids waiting to be adopted as well. "There's no way anyone would ever adopt me who wants a stutterer for a daughter." I thought to myself.
Emily waited next to me watching the door to the room open and Miss Heather the owner of the orphanage walked into the room followed by a man with brown hair with some dyed blonde hair and blue eyes and a woman with brown hair and blue eyes as well.
"So these are the children available for adoption right?" The man asked Heather.
"Yes that's right these are the children waiting to be adopted." Heather said.
The woman nodded. "So what are the childrens' names?" The woman asked Heather.
"Well from right to left you have Timothy, then Anthony, then Robert, then Amelia, then Samantha, then Emily." Heather said.
The man nodded. "I see is there by any chance a possibility to talk to the children?" The man asked Heather.
Heather smiled. "Of course take all the time you need I'll just go and get the paperwork ready if you find the child you want to adopt." Heather said then left the room.
The man and woman walked over to Timothy and the woman knelt down as I watched. "Hello Timothy my name is Sarah and the man with me is my husband Tom "Iceman" Kazansky." The woman who I now knew was named Sarah said.
"It's nice to meet you." Timothy said shyly looking at her.
The man who I now knew was Tom knelt down as well. "So Timothy what are some things you like to do for fun?" Ice asked him.
"Well I like playing with toy cars and playing on the playground outside." Timothy said.
Sarah nodded before looking at Ice whispering something into his ear then looked back at Timothy. "Well I think we'll move onto the next child but we'll keep you in mind okay?" Sarah said as she stood up with Ice getting up and helping her.
"Okay." Timothy said then walked away and started playing with some of the toy cars they had at the orphanage.
Sarah and Ice walked over to Anthony and knelt down again. "Hi Anthony as I'm sure you heard my wife Sarah say my name is Tom it's nice to meet you." Ice said.
Anthony nodded. "Yeah it's nice to meet you too." Anthony said shyly looking at him.
Sarah smiled warmly. "So tell me Anthony what do you like to do for fun?" Sarah asked him.
"Well I like playing video games and playing basketball outside." Anthony said.
Ice nodded before looking at Sarah whispering something into her ear then looked back at Anthony. "Well I think we'll move onto the next child but we'll keep you in mind okay?" Ice said as he stood up helping Sarah up.
"Okay." Anthony said then walked away and started playing a video game they had at the orphanage.
Sarah and Ice walked over to Robert and knelt down again. "Hi Robert as I'm sure you heard us say my name is Sarah it's nice to meet you." Sarah said.
Robert nodded. "Yeah it's nice to meet you too." Robert said shyly looking at her.
Ice smiled warmly. "So tell me Robert what do you like to do for fun?" Ice asked him.
"Well I like playing with action figures and playing tag outside." Robert said.
Sarah nodded before looking at Ice whispering something into his ear then looked back at Robert. "Well I think we'll move onto the next child but we'll keep you in mind okay?" Sarah said as she stood up with Ice getting up and helping her.
"Okay." Robert said then walked away and started playing with some of the action figures they had at the orphanage.
Sarah and Ice walked over to Amelia and knelt down again. "Hi Amelia as I'm sure you heard us say my name is Tom it's nice to meet you." Ice said.
Amelia nodded. "Yeah it's nice to meet you too." Amelia said shyly looking at him.
Sarah smiled warmly. "So tell me Amelia what do you like to do for fun?" Sarah asked her.
"Well I like coloring and making crafts." Amelia said.
Ice nodded before looking at Sarah whispering something into her ear then looked back at Amelia. "Well I think we'll move onto the next child but we'll keep you in mind okay?" Ice said as he stood up helping Sarah up.
"Okay." Amelia said then walked away and started coloring in a coloring book they had at the orphanage.
I gulped as Sarah and Ice knelt down in front of me. "Hi Samantha as I'm sure you heard us say my name is Sarah it's nice to meet you." Sarah said.
I nodded. "Y-Y-Yeah it's n-nice to m-meet you t-too." I said shyly looking at the floor ashamed of the stutter.
Ice smiled warmly lifting my head up so I was looking at them. "So tell me Samantha what do you like to do for fun?" Ice asked me.
"W-W-Well I-I like pl-playing with dolls a-and dr-dr-drawing things." I said.
Sarah nodded before looking at Ice whispering something into his ear then looked back at me. "Well I think we'll move onto the next child but we'll keep you in mind okay?" Sarah said as she stood up with Ice getting up and helping her.
"O-O-Okay." I said then walked away and started playing with one of the dolls they had at the orphanage watching as they talked to Emily until she walked over to me and Ice and Sarah left the room.
"So what do you think?" Emily asked me as she started playing.
"I-I don't know I-I-I think it w-went well b-but I-I always think th-that b-but it n-never works out." I said.
"Well I think this time will be different you saw how Tom lifted your head." Emily said.
"T-T-True." I said.
Heather walked into the room again smiling as she called all of us over to her so we all walked up to her.
"So which one of us is the lucky one?" Emily asked Heather.
Heather looked at me. "Samantha it's finally your lucky day Ice and Sarah have decided to adopt you." Heather said.
My eyes widened in shock. "A-A-Are you s-sure?" I asked Heather.
Heather nodded. "Yes I'm sure so go pack up your things Samantha." Heather said.
I nodded and walked to the room I shared with Emily as she followed me helping me pack up my stuff. "I-I-I'm g-going to m-miss you." I said giving her a hug after my things were packed.
Emily smiled sadly. "I'm going to miss you too try not to forget me will you." Emily said hugging me back.
"I-I'll try my best." I said leaving the room carrying my bag and walked up to Ice and Sarah.
Sarah smiled. "Are you ready to go to your new home?" Sarah asked me.
"I-I am b-but can we get some br-br-breakfast first I-I'm h-hungry." I said.
Ice nodded. "Yeah maybe we can get to know each other better during breakfast." Ice said as we left the orphanage.
Sarah smiled as I held her hand as we followed Ice to the car watching as he opened the trunk of the car so I put my bag in the trunk then we all got into the car and got buckled up then Ice drove us to a Cracker Barrel and parked the car then we all got out of the car and went inside.
I looked around as Sarah told one of the waiters that we needed a table for three and the waiter grabbed three menus and led us to a table then we all sat down as the waiter put the menus on the table then left us to look over the menu.
As we looked over the menus Ice looked up from his menu. "So Samantha I'm sure you must have questions." Ice said.
I nodded. "I-I-I do b-but I-I don't know wh-where to start." I said.
Sarah smiled softly. "Relax and just take your time Samantha." Sarah said.
"O-O-Okay I guess the f-first question I-I have is w-why me? O-Of all the kids at the or-or-orphanage why ch-choose me?" I asked them.
Ice chuckled. "Well speech doesn't matter to us but if you must know we loved the color of your eyes." Ice said.
"R-Really?" I asked them.
Sarah nodded. "They are the exact same color as Ice's eyes so it just seemed like you were the one for us." Sarah said as the waiter came back so we ordered our drinks coffee for Ice and Sarah and orange juice for me then the waiter left again.
I looked at Ice again. "S-So second question wh-what do you w-want me to c-call you two?" I asked Ice.
"Well I figured you could just call us Mom and Dad." Ice said.
Sarah nodded. "Of course but only if you're comfortable with it of course." Sarah said.
I smiled. "I-I'd love to." I said.
ice smiled. "Then that's settled." Ice said.
Sarah smiled as well. "Yeah any other questions?" Sarah asked me.
I nodded. "Y-Yeah one more question wh-what do you b-both do for a l-living and pl-please you can call me Samantha or Sam f-for sh-short." I said.
Ice grinned. "Well I'm a fighter pilot." Ice said.
Sarah nodded. "And I work from home." Sarah said.
My eyes widened in shock at what Ice said. "Th-Th-That's a-a-awesome so wh-what's y-your callsign?" I asked Ice.
"My callsign is Iceman." Ice said.
I nodded as the waiter returned with our drinks then left and we returned to looking at the menus. "Mom, Dad do you h-have a-any questions f-for me?" I asked them.
"Yeah I have just one how did you end up with the stutter?" Sarah asked me.
"W-W-Well a-a-apparently m-my throat got hit with s-some sort of d-debris in the car a-accident that k-k-killed my parents." I said.
Ice nodded again. "I see what about school?" Ice asked me.
"I-I-I'm h-homeschooled." I said as the waiter came back so we ordered our food as we all ordered cheesecake stuffed pancakes then the waiter took the menus away and left as we all started drinking our drinks as we looked around.
"I see well that will make things easy." Ice said.
"So Ice have you heard from Mav lately?" Sarah asked Ice as she sipped at her coffee.
Ice nodded. "Yeah I did Carole, Bradley, and him are all doing good." Ice said as he sipped his coffee as well.
I tilted my head confused. "Wh-Who are they?" I asked both of them as I sipped my juice.
"Oh yeah you don't know them yet but Pete is my husband's wingman when they fly and are close friends." Sarah said.
I nodded. "I-I see and who is Br-Br-Bradley and Carole?" I asked both of them again.
Ice sighed. "Well Carole and Bradley were the wife and son of another close friend of Pete's who was named Nick." Ice said.
"Wh-What do you mean w-were wh-what h-happened and wh-what were the callsigns?" I asked Ice.
"Well Pete's callsign is Maverick and Nick's callsign was Goose and Goose died in a training accident when they flew through my plane's jet wash and they lost the use of their engines and went into a spin where they were forced to eject and Goose hit his head on the canopy breaking his neck and since then Maverick is helping to raise Bradley and sometimes we all visit each other." Ice said.
"I-I see." I said before playing the peg game they had at the table then the waiter came with the food so I stopped playing and started eating.
Sarah started eating as well. "So are we still on with Maverick to go over to Carole's home Sunday and when is your next deployment?" Sarah asked Ice.
Ice started eating as well. "Yeah we're still on with going over to Carole's home Sunday just have to inform Mav that there will be one more person with us and my next deployment is next month but I need to check to make sure." Ice said.
Sarah and I nodded and we all eventually finished eating and drinking and got up then Ice paid the bill and we all started looking around the shop again and I found a doll, a stuffed animal, and a pretty necklace and Sarah found a dress and Ice found a shirt so he paid for everything then we left the restaurant and Ice drove us home.
