Pete gently placed the cup down beside his stash and reached for one of the chocolate pumpkin wrappers. “So, what exactly is a Heliotrope moon?”
“Apparently, and you’re going to love this,” Tom began gently, “The moon is going to appear purple. They aren’t sure if it’s a one-night-only event, but either way the moon is going to be shifting in color from that golden white to lilac…”
So a purple moon. Interesting.
“Sounds thrilling. Do they know why it’s purple?” Pete asked, popping the candy into his mouth, savoring the familiarity with a soft exhale.
Tom shrugged, “So far? No one can tell why exactly, but…” He hesitated and reached for his glasses, pushing them back up where they belonged.
“Something about Spectroscopy readings…wavelengths of light regarding the moon coming back with purple tints, I went to college for Engineering, not astronomy love.”
Pete nodded slowly, taking it all in, “Great, so we get a spooky moon one night in October, cool. I’m sure it’ll be beautiful to see,” He responded and popped a second Reese's into his mouth.

“I can’t promise I won’t be a stubborn ass along the way,” he says, wanting Jake to know what he’s getting into. “I’ll do my best not to be,” he promises.
Jake laughs that off, a playful grin on his face. “Oh, I’ll be shocked if you’re anything other than a stubborn ass, but that’s one of your best qualities.”
Bradley rolls his eyes, trying and failing to stifle his smile. Jake always seems to know exactly what to say. “Ha-ha,” he deadpans. “But, Jake, I really don’t know how I’ll ever be able to thank you enough.”
The other man shrugs as if that’s the absolute least of his worries. “I’m not doing this to be repaid, I’m doing it because I care about you,” Jake says, his words hanging in the air for a moment. “So what do you say? Sound like a plan?”
“Yeah,” he says, his tone grateful. “Yeah, it does.”
Or: Bradley sustains several broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder from the mission, and Jake refuses to sit by and watch Bradley handle the recovery all on his own. Pining ensues.
