“I killed him.” No explanation, no justification, just a simple statement of fact.
Suddenly the only sound in Pete’s ears is his own blood rushing. He looks at the man before him--the legendary Blackbeard, the pirate he’s admired above all for years, the one who inspired him to abandon his boring job at the docks for an exciting life of piracy--and then his mind’s eye paints a horrible scene for him.
Pete has always had a strong imagination; sometimes he enjoys it, sometimes he loathes it. Right now, he can picture this clear as day: Blackbeard shoving a sword straight through Lucius’ gut. Blood spilling from Lucius’ lips as he tries to make one last smartass, cutting remark at his killer’s expense. Clever, bright eyes glazing over in pain, then going dim. A body that had always been in motion, now unmoving on the ground, a pool of blood spilling out around him in an ever-increasing circle.
He sees all this in his mind, then he blinks, and he just sees Blackbeard. The man who murdered Lucius Spriggs.
“Blackbeard,” Pete declares calmly, loudly, and is surprised that his voice doesn’t shake. “I challenge you to a fucking duel.”
