"He just needed to get home, back to the house with an always-lit fireplace, where welcoming arms would wrap around him and gently squeeze him until he fell asleep. Deep down he knew they were gone, that the smell of home-cooked meals was carried away with the winds many years ago. Deep down he knew he would never hear his mother’s loud laugh again, so similar to his own. Never look into his father’s gentle kind blue eyes again, which resemble his closely.
But he buried that as deep as possible, ignoring the voice that said there was no hope. He needed this. There were no other options for him after this, he had nothing else, no one else. And he was nothing if not stubborn. So he kept going, right arm hanging numbly at his side and exhaustion making his steps harder and harder. He was not surprised when his foot caught on a root and he fell face-first into the ground, landing hard since he was too exhausted even to attempt to catch himself. His thoughts went to that quote about a tree falling in a forest when no one was around, if it made a sound, because he surely did."
After escaping capture, Tommy makes his way back to his childhood home. Only to discover that another family has made a home there.
