Work Text:
Maverick opened the front door quietly, sighing as arguments reached his ears.
His wife, Amelia, was bustling in the kitchen, berating their eldest daughter, Madalyn for fighting. Sky was shouting at Taylor for wearing her clothes, and Nicholas was screaming for everyone to be quiet because he can't hear the tv.
Usually, he would've shouted at them all to stop arguing and calm down.
But today: he was happy. They were alive, and they didn't know how close he came to death.
He debated walking back out to get some takeout, but heard: "DAD'S HOME! NOW YOU'RE ALL IN FOR IT!" Hollered by the 10-year-old.
He raised an eyebrow. "Hey, dad," He ruffled his hair. "Hey, kid. How was school?" Nicholas wrinkled his nose. "Eh." Maverick chuckled as he stepped into the hallway.
"STOP taking my clothes!"
"MOM said I could BORROW them!"
"Yeah! BORROW not TAKE!"
"SKY! LET me use the DRESS!"
"NO TAYLOR! It's MINE!"
"MOM!"
"MOM!"
He cleared his throat, wincing as the girls shouted at him over one another. "Girls! Please! Taylor! For the love of god, wear another dress!" He pointed. "And Sky! It wouldn't hurt you to share every once in a while," They huffed, shoving each other as they stormed back up the stairs.
He sighed as he stepped into the kitchen, prepping for the final ambush. "Ah, hello Pete. Go on, Maddie. Tell your dad why you got expelled!"
Ordinarily, Pete would've chewed her out for being expelled. But instead, he sighed loudly. "Madalyn. Go do your homework. Cool off," He said. Maddie opened her mouth, but Pete sent a warning glare. She grumbled about how shit this house was as she left.
"Pete! What the hell! I could've used your support then!" Amelia snapped. He smirked as he brought her in for a hug. She went limp in his arms, moaning about work and the kids. "David tried to report me for doing a task Beth said, but Mark backed us up, but now Kevin's with David and they're trying to have a meeting where-"
Pete zoned out as he rocked gently from side to side.
Sometimes, he was glad that David and Kevin were Amelia's main problems.
The saying is right.
