“Come in! We are so excited to meet you!” Charlie shakes hands with both women before letting them inside.
Today they are meeting with a potential surrogate and her wife! Delilah, age 31, and her wife Carla, age 29.
Charlie leads them into the living room “Would either of you like tea? My husband also made some cookies if either of you wanted some” he smiles politely.
The two accept the offer, and soon enough all four people are sitting, drinking tea and munching on sweets.
“So! Tell us about yourselves? Have you been considering surrogacy for a while?” Nick asks, breaking the ice.
Delilah takes a sip of her tea “I’ve always wanted to be a surrogate. Especially once one of my best friends got married and wanted kids but wasn’t able to” she explains “Being surrounded by queer people like ourselves really helped solidify that this is what I wanted to do. I was able to carry both of our children, but some people, like yourselves, don’t have the option to carry”
Charlie nods “Have you been a surrogate for anyone before?” He questions, holding Nicks hand as he takes a bite of one of the cookies Nick brought out.
“Yes I have, just the one time for my friend. I’m now Auntie Del” she chuckles, looking to her wife “I think it’s always been something on both of our minds, I’ve never carried a child before, but watching her do it honestly is magical.” Carla chimes in.
Delilah turns to Nick and Charlie “Tell is a bit about you two, how did you two meet? How long have you been thinking about children?” She asks politely.
Charlie smiles and looks to Nick “we met in school, I was in year 10, he was in year 11. We instantly clicked, I thought he was straight, he also thought he was straight. it’s been ten years now” he laughs, leaning onto Nicks shoulder “I think we’ve always wanted kids, even before we got married. We recently brought it up again since we got the house and I think we are both ready!” He explains, Nick giving his head a soft kiss in response.
“That is so cute!” Carla exclaims “I can’t believe you met when you were so young! Me and Del met in Uni, when we were 19 and 21.”
The two couples continue to talk about how they met, and funny stories.
They tell Nick and Charlie about their children, Toby age five and Finn age seven. They tell the two about their own IVF journey, an easy process for Delilah luckily, only taking two tries for the first pregnancy, and only one for the second.
Nick tells his story of finding himself with the help of Charlie and his friends. Charlie tells funny stories from their wedding night, like how Tao smashed a cupcake into Nicks face, which made everyone laugh.
As they are talking Charlie can’t help but think about how much they’ve grown.
Charlie now has longer hair, he has an amazing job doing what he loves, an amazing husband who has been there through every struggle and still loves him. Charlie now has way more good days then bad, and has been self harm clean for years.
He’s also been able to watch Nick grow into a more confident man, growing out his facial hair, getting a job that no one expected him to choose but loves it anyway. He’s so much more unapologetically himself.
They continue to talk more about logistical things. About how Nick and Charlie want to be involved in the process, they discuss their interests, values, family, anything they can think of.
By the end of it all it had been hours, and all four knows the outcome. Delilah grabs a small packet out of her messenger bag.
“I think this meeting has gone well. And if this has gone the way I expect, here’s a packet of my information. It’s not a contract, we will need to talk to the agency and set up and appointment. There is a bunch of legal stuff we’ll have to do” she explains as best she can “it’s a lot of stuff we will have to later. But I really enjoyed this” she smiles at the two.
“Of course! I think we can both agree we’d love you to be our surrogate. We will contact the agency immediately to get a meeting planned” Nick says standing up to lead them out.
They all stand as well and say their goodbyes, giving small hugs to everyone.
“It was amazing meeting you two, and I can’t wait to learn more!” Carla smiles.
The two wave as the girls walk to their car. Once they close the door they both look at each other in happiness.
“I think we found the perfect people for this” Charlie says immediately.
“I agree. You should call the place, I’m gonna call my mum.”
They both head to different rooms, excited to finally get things started.
