    Summary

Overhead, vultures circle. Blistering hot sand laps at his ankles, but still he presses ever forward. The sand is as bright as the snow in the wintertime back home- that’s not his home anymore- and if he looks long enough his vision goes black. He shivers, chilled to the bone.

Jiang Cheng, the desert whispers, I am waiting for you.

He presses forward until he cannot see straight. Then he crawls until he cannot drag himself any further, arms trembling with exertion. He cannot swallow, throat parched and aching. Another round of shivers wracks his fragile body, and as his vision fades out he sees a flicker, a glint of light in the sand in front of him. With the very last ounces of strength remaining in him, Jiang Cheng reaches for the flash and closes his palm around the cool, clean metal of the hilt of a sword. It feels like victory. His mouth tastes like blood.
