Perfect

Summary:

When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful
I don’t deserve this, darling, you look perfect tonight

Work Text:

I found a love for me,
Darling just dive right in,
And follow my lead,
Well, I found a girl beautiful and sweet,
I never knew you were the someone waiting for me.

Remus was exhausted. He was downright weary. The church, the people, the socialising. He wasn’t used to being around this many people and having to be engaged for so long with people he barely knew. But he did it anyway. It was not helped by the fact that the full moon had only happened a couple of days earlier and left him feeling more beat up than ever. It was like every bone in his body had been broken and reset all in one night and left him feeling weak but even though he was physically aching he had never been happier.

‘Cause we were just kids when we fell in love,
Not knowing what it was,
I will not give you up this time,
But darling, just kiss me slow, your heart is all I own,
And in your eyes, you’re holding mine.

The morning had gone in such a blur. He had woken, cold and slightly hungover on his couch while his friend, Sirius, slept star-fished on his bed. He had fared better than James who was scrunched up on his loveseat and Peter who had slept on the living room floor, his face pressed against the coffee table leg. The boys had had a good night celebrating his last day of freedom in all the pubs in the vicinity. Remus rose and accepted Sirius’ ‘Hangover Cure’ with mercy hoping the pounding in his head would disappear. They dressed and ate before heading to the church.

At the church, he waited at the end of the aisle jutting around as the boys tried their best to calm him down. Remus could barely function he was so nervous. He didn’t know why. To marry Y/N was his greatest achievement and he had longed to since they had met as two messed up kids trying to navigate their way through school. Then she arrived. She floated down the aisle, clad in white satin, a vision to behold with her dad at her side a smile beaming on her face as they locked eyes. She had basically run down the aisle to meet him.

He would be lying if he said he had been paying any attention to the minister as he droned on, going through the motions of the marriage. The two of them couldn’t stop watching each other, giggling and smirking as they shared secret knowing glances and conversations. Within under an hour, the pair were married and after they had sealed the deal with a kiss the two of them were whisked to the reception where they had barely spent two consecutive minutes together. Friend after friend, family member after family member encircled them to congratulate them leaving them with no time to eat or breathe.

His elderly aunt Marjorie had collared him for at least half an hour about the ‘rules’ of a ‘proper marriage’.  The only downside was that he was by no means a people person. After the procession of thanks at the church and him being forced to give a speech, he had become weary. Sensing his fatigue Y/N had offered to take the brunt of the socialising, being so much better at it than he was as she was much more extroverted. And so, he moved to safety by the corner of the dance floor, joined by his friends. He sat on a chair, nursing a beer, near the speakers of the dance floor with Peter who was chatting about all of the girls he intended to chat up at the wedding. He wittered on and on but Remus could barely hear him. He was watching his now wife float elegantly around the rented hall, talking to each person with animation and happiness. She was a vision of loveliness. His eyes watched her intently as she stopped to talk to her grandmother.

As the little old lady moved on she looked up and spotted him watching her. She smiled at him causing him to beam at her and she started to move slowly toward him. As she did a familiar voice commandeered the microphone capturing both of their attention, they turned their heads to find Sirius smirking as he spoke into the mic his words slightly slurred as he said, ‘ladies and gentlemen, the happy couple will now make their first dance!’

The room broke into applause as the couple watched each other and with a shrug, Y/N moved forward to meet Remus and clasped his hand so she could pull him to the centre of the dancefloor and start to sway. He was no dancer. By no means at all. From the age of 12, Remus had started to shoot upward and hadn’t stopped until he reached 18. His limbs also got the memo and grew with him which had left him with an athletic yet lanky shape. Fortunately, his figure, boyish good looks and his charming smile were enough to capture Y/N’s heart.

Unfortunately, this meant that he was uncoordinated and gangly when it came to dancing. And so, in the middle of the dancefloor, a hundred eyes on him he merely swayed from side to side as he held his wife allowing her to take the lead.

Baby, I’m dancing in the dark with you between my arms,
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song,
When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath,
But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight.

She was holding him tightly around the waist, clasping his hand in hers as she looked up at him with a wide smile as he looked down at her adoringly.
‘Hey,’ she whispered with a slight giggle.
‘Hey yourself,’ he murmured back reciprocating her radiance.
‘Crazy day, huh?’
‘Yeah. Crazy but good. The best day.’
‘I can’t believe we’re married!’ she said as she pulled him slightly closer so she could lean into him and rest her head on his chest as they swayed.
‘Me either,’ he said, ‘thanks for taking the brunt of the socialising. I’m wiped.’
‘I know baby, we should have picked a better day for a wedding. Stupid full moon,’ she chuckled.
‘It was more the hangover that knocked me out but yeah-’ Remus laughed loudly, which Y/N felt rumble against her ear causing Y/N to giggle.
‘Well, I don’t mind. Marriage is all about teamwork,’ she whispered, ‘I’d do anything for you baby, getting around all these people has left me a little sweaty I’m not going to lie. I bet my makeup is a mess now, I must look atrocious.’
‘You look perfect,’ Remus whispered. It was barely audible but Y/N could just about hear it over the music and the chatter of their guests. She smiled and Remus felt her face move against him as she did.

Remus couldn’t believe it. This moment in time was the best in his life. He had never expected to love anyone like he had Y/N. Being what he was he had never expected to find someone who loved him as she did. But she had come into his life like a whirlwind and done away with his insecurities and beliefs he didn’t deserve love.

Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know,
She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I’ll share her home,
I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets,
To carry love, to carry children of our own.

Though their life after school had become uncertain and fraught with danger they never stopped loving each other and so were determined to get through these times together and show their solidarity. That was why they had gotten married.  They planned for the future. Despite the ambiguity of their world, they planned. They wanted a family. A future.

We are still kids, but we’re so in love,
Fighting against all odds,
I know we’ll be alright this time,
Darling, just hold my hand,
Be my girl, I’ll be your man,
I see my future in your eyes.

As the song faded out the two of them stepped back slightly to watch each other with smiles as wide as their faces. Remus looked down at her, wondering how he got so lucky before he leant down and pressed a slow tender kiss into her lips. Remus was exhausted but he was happy and Y/N was perfect.

Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song
When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful
I don’t deserve this, darling, you look perfect tonight
