Work Text:
Nancy was in bed reading a book to try to cure her boredom. She tried to ignore the way the silence hung around her. Really, she was being ridiculous. She could last a few hours without her girlfriend. But days spent with Robin were endlessly bright and kept the monsters at bay. It wasn't a bad thing that Nancy loved spending time in the warmth of Robin's sunlight. It was maybe a problem that Nancy hated going a few hours alone.
Something hitting her window jolts her out of her thoughts. Nancy ignores it and tried to go back to her book. But all she ends up doing is rereading the same sentence over and over. She hears another tap and then a third in quick succession. This couldn't be a coincidence.
Nancy crept towards the window, suspiciously peering through her curtains. And there, standing in her yard covered in moonlight, was said girlfriend.
Nancy threw open her window, "Robin," she hisses, "What are you doing here?"
"To see you obviously," Robin responds with an eye roll.
Nancy shook he head, but no matter how disapproving she acted she couldn't hide the fact that she was pleased that Robin was here. She loved that Robin missed her as much as she did and she loved that Robin was a hopeless romantic. Maybe it was all the movies she watched with their dramatic proposals.
However, her delight at seeing her girlfriend quickly shifts to fear when she sees Robin move to try to climb up. "No! Just sneak through the door," Nancy frantically whispers. But whatever she says won't talk sense into Robin, she's determined.
Nancy is biting her nails the whole time Robin scales the wall. God, how fucked up would it be if she made it through the upside-down unscathed but broke her arm doing this?
But despite how cynical Nancy is, Robin defies her expectation and makes it up. She leans her arm on the windowsill and grins, "Hey."
"Just get in here, you're scaring me," Nancy says, but she can't hide her smile.
"Don't I get a kiss?"
"Not yet. You have to get in here first," Nancy teases.
Robin, not one to turn down a challenge, starts pulling her body up. But suddenly her arm slips and she drops. There's a loud thump.
"Robin!"
The only response she gets is a groan and before she can ask again her door opens. It's Mike, looking slightly panicked. He's holding a guitar in an attempt to look threatening. It doesn't work, he just looks foolish. "Is something there?" he asks.
Nancy pulls herself away from the window, "No," she answers, perhaps too quickly.
Mike narrows his eyes and before Nancy can make an excuse Robin's head pops up. He sighs and shoots Nancy a look that says really, I'm not dealing with your shit. He silently leaves, closing the door behind him for once.
"Oops," Robin nervously giggles. And just like that, she's instantly forgiven. Because really, how can she stay mad at Robin Buckley?
Robin climbs through the window, successfully this time, and tumbles onto the floor. Nancy tries not to wince at the noise it makes.
Robin catches it anyway, "Sorry. Grace isn't one of my strong suits."
Nancy lets out a breathless laugh, "Oh, I know. I'm pretty sure you just woke the whole house."
"Sorry," Robin says with a grimace.
"Don't be. I don't care if my mom is mad at me as long as I get to see you." Robin beams under Nancy's praise and Nancy takes the time to examine her sprawled awkwardly on the carpet. She has twigs in her hair and a few scrapes from the bushes below.
Nancy runs to the bathroom to get a few bandaids for the worst of the cuts and gently places them on Robin. As she's cradling Robin's freckled face in her hands she speaks, "Next time, I'm the one doing all the climbing."
"Probably for the best," Robin agrees before pulling Nancy into a kiss. And just like that, all thoughts about the night's previous events disappear.
Despite Nancy's promise, she hadn't actually thought there would be a next time. But no matter how hard she tried, Nancy just couldn't fall asleep. So she decided to sneak out and go to Robin's house. Even though she's a legal adult, she leaves a note on her pillow so she doesn't scare her mom before silently padding down the stairs and out the door, a wave of exhilaration running up her spine.
This shouldn't thrill her as much as it does, she's done much worse. The height of rebellion shouldn't be sneaking out to cuddle with her girlfriend, she owns multiple guns, but it feels that way. It's intoxicating to know that no one knows where she is or where she's going. Maybe Robin was right when she said Nancy was a priss in highschool.
Either way, now she understands why Robin wanted to climb up to her window instead of going through the door.
The car ride is only a few minutes, made shorter by the lack of traffic at two in the morning. Nancy parks a block away from her house so her parents don't freak out in the morning. She walks the rest of the way to the house, going through the yard until she reaches the window she knows is Robin's. She hopes none of the neighbors are awake, because she definitely looks suspicious.
Robin's house is only one story, but Nancy is short, so she still has to jump up to be able to climb through the widow. Robin sleeps with the window partially open, a habit Nancy frequently reminds her is dangerous, but now she's grateful for it.
It doesn't matter how short Nancy may be, she still can't squeeze her way through this, so instead she calls Robin's name, getting louder each time she doesn't respond.
Robin wakes with a start. "Nancy?" her voice is incredulous as if she still believes she's dreaming, "Are you really here? What time is it?"
She opens the window enough for Nancy to get before getting an answer. Nancy climbs in, taking satisfaction in the fact she lands quietly and on her feet. "Sorry. I couldn't sleep," she answers a bit sheepishly, just now realizing that maybe Robin didn't want to be woken up in the middle of the night.
Robin rubs her eyes, "No, you know I'm always happy to see you." She says it so simply, with so much honesty that it fills Nancy with love.
Robin crawls back into bed and pats the spot next to her. Nancy takes a moment to admire her before joining: her clothes are rumpled and her hair is sticking in every direction, but she still manages to look beautiful.
Nancy slides under the blankets and nuzzles Robin's side, "Are you sure you don't mind?"
Robin kisses the top of her head, "Of course I don't. I'm happy you're here."
"I love you."
"I love you too. And for the record, you were much better at that than me."
Nancy laughs, "It's not hard to beat you."
"Humble as ever, I see," Robin counters.
"Yup," Nancy snuggles into Robin's side. She sighs contentedly before finally falling asleep, legs tangling with Robin's.
