The mercy of Love

Summary:

“How long will it take,” Their noses brushed, and Mika promptly decided that was his favourite thing in the world. “To convince you that I see you no differently than before, just because you’re a vampire now?”

Mika hummed, closing his eyes and drawing in a deep breath of Yuu’s sweet scent. “Not too long, if we can keep doing this.”

“I’ll give you as many kisses as it takes, then.”

“It’s a deal.”

Notes:

I heavily debated not posting this because it's 99% word vomit and 1% structure, but then thought eh, what's the harm?

my silly little brain just really liked that blood drinking scene from s2 ep10 of the anime (and also thought it would be the ~perfect time~ for them to kiss) and screamed at me till I wrote it out.

I have no idea what this is. it just kinda. happened.

no idea if anyone's gonna read this, but if you do then enjoy! :)

Work Text:

His eyes followed the droplets of crimson as they slid languidly over Yuu’s forearm, pooling briefly at his elbow before falling to the floor with tiny splats

Mika swallowed.

Clenched his jaw so tight it hurt, because he could feel his fangs itching to pierce that soft flesh, to lap at the blood that probably tasted so very sweet.

He was a monster.

Bonelessly, he fell to his knees before his friend, energy entirely fixated on keeping the hunger in check. He would not lash out. He would not take the bait and attack Yuu like some rabid animal.

His shoulders quivered from the effort and he reached his hands up to cover his face, to do something that would keep the monster inside him contained.

“You’re a real piece of work,” Mika mumbled shakily as he lowered his palm just enough to fix Yuu with a stare that was as accusatory as it was defeated. He was too far gone to wipe the emotions off his face and even attempt to control his expression.

“Maybe so,” Yuu’s stare, firm just like his tone, did not waver. “But you’re the one who let this piece of work into your family.”

“That was my mistake. I’m going to become a monster because of you.” Mika’s voice cracked on the final word.

“Whatever you become, we’ll still be family.”

Of course, Yuu would say that. Of course, he would cast even his uncompromising hatred for vampires aside when it came to his family. When it came to Mika.

He knows he should have expected it.

Mika slapped a gloved hand over his mouth. A final attempt to reign himself in. To not give out beneath the earth-shattering pressure of the hungry monster that was a giant stone in his chest.

It hurt.

It hurt so bad.

His eyes glittered with tears and his hand fell away, breaths coming hard and fast as the hunger struck him more profoundly than ever before. Yuu knelt in front of him, having the gall to wear that soft, fond smile of his. The one reserved only for the handful of genuine moments shared between the two of them.

And Mika realised.

Realised that he didn’t have a choice in this matter. That Yuu had him wrapped completely around his finger.

Agony rolled over him in waves. His breaths shook, just like the hands that were fisted in the fabric of his pants. Just like his voice, which came out so small and broken. Defeated.

“Yuu.” And he knew he couldn't do anything. Whether he liked it or not, he would bend to Yuu’s will. To Yuu’s mercy. “It hurts so much.”

He gulped in a desperate lungful of air.

"... I'm so thirsty."

The whispered words hung in the quiet of the abandoned supermarket like the shameful, disgusting confession they were.

Mika hated that saying them made his chest feel a little lighter. He shuddered with the relief of the blunt honesty.

He risked a glance up at his friend. Yuu caught his gaze, the warmth and reassurance in his expression and the trust within those vibrant green eyes making Mika’s head spin. And when Yuu extended his bleeding arm towards him, giving a slight nod, his gaze softening in understanding, Mika snapped.

He physically felt the last thread of self-control snap under the caress of those eyes that managed to worm their way through his defences and touch the deepest, darkest, most desperate part of him.

Becoming a spectator inside of his own body wasn’t Mika’s favourite sensation in the world. His muscles coiled on their own accord, and he could only watch through his own red-tinted eyes as he sprang forward and all but pounced onto his best friend.

A strained yelp tore from Mika’s throat right before his teeth finally, finally sunk into his best friend’s warm flesh.

His fangs pierced the tender skin of where Yuu’s shoulder connected with his neck, and he felt more than heard the sharp intake of breath from his companion.

The heat flooded Mika’s mouth suddenly. And once he tasted the first drop on his tongue, he seemed to be unable to stop. He pressed closer to the other until their bodies were flush together without so much as an inch between them, caging Yuu within his arms as newly-found desperation flared in his veins.

You’re mine, Yuu. All mine.

A low growl resonated in his throat. His fangs buried a touch deeper into the other’s skin.

And then a hand was caressing the back of Mika’s head. Not pushing him away, or hitting him like he expected - but gently guiding him even closer.

"Yuu," he would have wailed, voice pathetic and broken with emotion, if his body wasn’t acting against his will and his mouth wasn’t otherwise occupied.

The hand began stroking his hair in soothing motions and Mika’s sharp ears picked up a tiny and - dare he say - contented sigh from above. As if Yuu had read his mind and was aware of all the emotions coursing through him in a violent storm.

“Welcome back, Mika.”

Mika squeezed his eyes shut. Felt a tear slip out and trail down his cheek. The monster tearing him up from the inside paused its assault. And slowly but surely, the pain subsided.

Yuu’s hand stayed a grounding touch against his hair.

As soon as Mika felt control returning to his limbs, he tediously extracted his fangs, careful not to hurt Yuu any more than he already had. Yuu’s hand fell from the back of his head when Mika turned away, unceremoniously crumpling to the floor. The pain was gone, and all he could feel was a massive wave of relief washing over him, seeping the strength from his muscles and turning his bones to jello.

He let his blonde hair fall over his face in a fruitless attempt to hide, but he could still sense Yuu’s gaze boring into him like a physical presence.

His shoulders shook, tears ran in a river down his face, and even though he had clamped a hand over his blood-stained lips, Mika was sure Yuu easily picked up the hitched breaths that escaped him. But the other didn’t move or even say anything, and Mika was thankful for the moment of quiet. It gave him enough time to let the sound of his own heartbeat pounding in his ears settle to a more manageable volume.

A tad more composed, he finally peeked up at Yuu, a helpless smile spreading across his cheeks at the sight of his best friend’s waiting gaze.

“Mika-” Yuu’s eyes widened in surprise.

It was the reaction he anticipated.

The feeling was subtle, at first. And then more prominent, squeezing him from the inside like an embrace that was slightly too tight. Mika felt it all the same; the influx of power surging through his veins in the form of his best friend’s blood, calling a complete stop to the natural human process of cellular degeneration.

Time and age abandoned Mikaela Hyakuyu.

Yuu’s shocked expression fell away, replaced with realisation, but he still gazed at Mika’s eyes in slight awe. Mika knew the bright blue was fading away; making way for the bloody crimson that all vampires carried with them.

Wherever they went, leaving nothing but bloodied bodies behind.

I’m becoming a monster, Mika mused dryly in his mind. I’m becoming the very thing I used to hate.

His tears flowed freely, smile wide and a touch hysterical at the irony of it all. He even let out a tiny, strained laugh, hanging his head and simultaneously breaking his and Yuu’s stare-off.

“I’m sorry, Yuu,” he said, voice small. “I became the very thing you swore to destroy, all because I wasn’t strong enough, because I couldn’t-”

He got cut off by a gentle hand reaching over to cup his cheek.

When had Yuu moved closer?

The hand tilted his face up, so Mika was again stared down by bright green eyes. The green of fresh-cut grass, or leaves on the treetops soaking up the warmth of summer. Mika looked at Yuu’s eyes, and saw everything beautiful in the world. Yuu’s palm felt so warm and rough against his face, and he leaned into it subconsciously, seeking comfort from the tender touch.

“Mika,” his best friend smiled, and it seemed almost… indulgent. Mika watched in confusion as Yuu shook his head in amusement. “Didn’t I just say that whatever you are, you’re still my family? Or are you suffering from memory loss now?”

Mika had the self-control to look offended for all of one second before he breathed out a genuine laugh.

“You’re still you, ” Yuu continued, tone more serious and earnest. “You’re still my Mika.”

It echoed in his mind. My Mika. That’s what he called me.

“Ok,” Mika replied, then, steadier, “Alright.”

Yuu’s thumb swiped a tear from its path down the side of his face, rubbing affectionately underneath his eye. Only then did Mika register that his own hands had fisted in the fabric of Yuu’s black jacket, how their faces were so close they were sharing breaths. He automatically glanced down at the other’s lips before he could stop himself. Then, realising what had just crossed his mind, tilted his face away and slackened his grip. This closeness between them was strange, and the sudden onslaught of thoughts that came with it was even stranger. Mika needed to get away - before he did something he would regret.

“Sorry, I- sorry.” He began drawing out of Yuu’s grip and personal space. “I’ll just-”

A hand caught the front of his cloak, and Yuu pulled him right back, if not even closer than they’d been before. Mike could - should - have resisted using his recovered vampire strength, but then he caught his best friend’s intent-filled gaze and he was gone. Helpless in the face of him.

“Mika,” Yuu breathed into the space between them, the hand that cupped Mika’s cheek shifting down to allow the calloused thumb to trace over the vampire’s lips. “Can I… kiss you?”

He should have said no.

“Why?” He asked instead, so softly that were the other not so close, he wouldn’t have heard. “I’m a monster, Yuu. Why would you want to kiss someone like me?”

Annoyance flashed through Yuu’s piercing eyes, his brows furrowing. “Oh Mika, you are such an idiot.”

And then Yuu’s lips were on top of his, and all Mika could do was stay stone-still as Yuu pressed their mouths together in a tender caress. Mika didn’t remember how his eyes fluttered shut, nor how his arms ended up around his best friend’s neck, pulling him as close as possible.

And maybe it only lasted a few seconds. But to Mika, it felt like years.

Yuu was the one to pull away first, but only far enough to be able to speak.

Mika slipped off his gloves and buried his fingers into Yuu’s hair, relishing the feeling of its fluffiness beneath his fingers. Both of the other’s hands cupped his cheeks now, drawing him into another kiss, this one less hesitant and deeper than the first. Mika smiled against Yuu’s soft lips.

And he realised that he wasn’t crying anymore.
