come in with the rain

Summary:

“he’s still looking at leorio and, in this sleeping state, he’s taken back to the hunters exam. that night they slept together in the airship had been one of kurapikas fonder and softer memories. it was when, for the first time, he thought about what it would be like to fall asleep next to the same person every night. he greedily let himself indulge in the fantasy of a normal life. a normal partner and a normal home to come back to. even now, he finds himself lost in this fantasy as he feels his own gaze upon leorio growing softer and softer and…. no.

he can’t do this to himself. not again.”

or that fic where kurapika shows up on leorios doorstep at 3 am, soaked by the rain.

Chapter 1: just another day

Chapter Text

it was always like this.

leorio had gotten used to the monotonous routine of college life. wake up early, go to bed late, lots of classes and studying in between and maybe a meal or two if he’s lucky.

some days he feels it’s not worth it. but when he thinks about everything he’s been through, and everything he wants to do, he gets back up and keeps moving.

being a hunter had its perks. he didn’t have to worry about relying on shitty campus food nor did he have to live in a shared shitty dorm. he was financially stable enough now so he opted for an off campus apartment where he lived alone and could make most of his meals.

it was late at night. rain poured outside and leorio sighed as he stretched back in his chair. a desk full of homework, text books and empty mugs was laid out in front of him. as he settled back in he checked the time. damn, it was nearly 3 am. he had class at 8 am but he still had work to do.

“screw it” he thought, “i need my sleep”

he got out of his chair and stumbled on over towards his room. not even bothering to change out of his clothes he flopped down on the bed, and pulled out his phone.

no new messages

“yeah whatever” he muttered as he put his phone down

it’s not that he was necessarily a reclusive person, in fact he was quite the opposite. he found that he likes having people around, and that he needs social interactions to thrive. college however had other ideas as his studies took up most of his time. most days by the time he was done with all his work, he would be too drained to try going out. sure he has some class friends but no one he can really call a real friend.

he considers calling gon or killua, just to hear someone else’s voice aside from his own. but he recognized what time it was and knew that they most likely have their own lives as well. gon now freshly in high school and killua doing… well whatever killua does.

he sighs and turns onto his back. he stares at the ceiling and allows his thoughts to wonder onto calling kurapika.

damn it’s been a while since he’s heard from him.

leorio turns back over and picks up his phone again. he opens up his messages and clicks on kurapikas name. a long string of one sided texts come up as leorio scrolls up and up on their quiet conversation. he could call him. he might pick up… or he might ignore his calls like he has been doing for the past three years.

in the past three years leorio has only heard from kurapika twice. once on leorios birthday (which he was dumbfounded to see that kurapika remembered) and the other being just to ask randomly once about gon and killua. both were short conversations, with hardly more than a few texts between each other.

leorio sighs again and puts his phone back on the nightstand. he’s an idiot. he’s an idiot to have even thought of contacting kurapika.

why does he even care?

why should he even care?

leorio ponders this for a while as he begins to feel himself drift off. thoughts of the past flood his mind until he hears a noise.

he sits up quickly ready to react to whatever the threat may be. despite his hunter wealth he doesn’t really live in the best part of town so he is always slightly weary of his surrounding, even when he’s at home. he waits for what feels like forever until he hears it again.

a knock.

a knock? who would be knocking on his door at this hour?

he takes proper precautions and looks to grab anything he can on his way to the door. he quickly picks up a textbook, even though he knows it won’t do much, but just in case he needs to protect himself.

there’s another knock as he reaches for the handle and swings it open.

leorio readies himself but instead of any true threat, comes face to face with a small framed man with blond hair, drenched by the pouring rain outside.

“…kurapika?”
