Sleepovers, Stitches, and Smiles

Summary:

Sebastian observes a slumber party.

Work Text:

Sebastian gloats quietly to himself as he sets down the tray of cinnamon buns and cocoa he's just spent the last half hour whipping up, exchanging it for his young son's master's slumbering form. He'd known Ciel wouldn’t be able to stay awake all night.

Allowing the boy to curl up in his arms like a kitten, Sebastian takes a quick look around at the drawing room. The normally stately chamber is full of blanket forts and festooned with nearly every pillow in the manor. Sleepovers are a somewhat alien concept to him, but everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.

Finny and Alois are playing some kind of card game with at least three decks and no conceivable rules, as far as Sebastian can make out. There's a lot of giggling and the occasional squeak and a few instances in which both boys, without so much as blinking a signal, slam both hands down onto the pattern of cards on the floor.

Thank goodness for marble tile.

Sieglinde, Lizzy, and Soma are stretched out across a somewhat lopsided throne of pillows. Their overly grand gestures and pantomimes of snobbery seem to hint at make-believe; Sebastian’s guessing at high tea or perhaps French government.

Agni is seated on the deep blue couch near the high window next to Wolf with a long, dark-colored bundle of fabric spread around them like a throw blanket.

Sebastian glides a bit closer. Wolf's normally rigid posture is- softened, somehow, as he leans sideways to watch Agni’s nimble fingers manipulating a small shiny object.

"-tricky," Agni is explaining. His voice is lower than usual. "It took me a while to perfect it, but it's useful and strong."

"Yes."

It's a coat, Sebastian realizes. Whose, he isn't sure, but there's an unsightly tear in the left shoulder. Agni's needle flashes once, twice, and he beams.

"Like so!"

"Show me again. Please."

Agni obliges. Wolf carefully takes the needle from him and reaches for the torn part of the coat. The khansama guides his hands into place, adjusting his grip.

"Slowly, very good. Almost. Excellent! You are a quick study."

Wolf's eyes flick up to Agni’s, then down again. "...thank you?"

"You are most welcome."

Sebastian smiles to himself as his son young master begins to stir.
