Work Text:

"What is love to you?"

Datz paused in front of the fridge, before recovering from the question and grabbing an apple. He turned to Dhurke as he shut the fridge, taking in the inquisitive look on his face.

He thought for a second.

"Love is, uh... something you do." Datz tried not to say anything too obvious and pulled out his kukri. As the knife made contact and the peel spiraled off the apple, he couldn't help but say more.

"It's something you work for, something you show." He discarded the peel on the countertop and walked to where Dhurke was seated on their couch, chewing on the end of a fountain pen Datz had found (stolen) for him. Datz held out the apple. Dhurke took it.

"Thank you."

"Of course." Of course, because it feels so obvious, something he doesn't need to say. He continued on.

"Love is purposeful. You feel it because you want to, because you can't imagine feeling anything else. You give yourself to it, because it deserves to be felt." Datz could feel Dhurke's gaze flitting across his face. He purposefully refrained from making eye contact, in case he gives anything away.

"Love is something you devote yourself to. It's.. it's so much fun to feel, and it's even better when it's reciprocated in some way. Love is best when shared." Like an apple, like the one Dhurke had taken two bites out of before he got lost in Datz's features, before all he could focus on were the way the evening sun caught on his profile and the words that endlessly tumbled from his mouth.

"Are you in love, Datz?" He hadn't meant for the question to escape, honestly, but when Datz turned to him with surprise in his eyes, he didn't back down. "Do you feel it?" Do you share it?

"...I suppose I do. I-I gave myself to it a long time ago. I've been feeling it for so long that it comes so easy." It felt good to tell this to Dhurke, to work out his feelings without being too specific, but he knew that, more than anything, he wanted Dhurke to know. He deserved to know.

"I've always devoted myself to the people I love. It's natural. And it's given back to me as well. It's brought me places I never knew I would be."

"Where did it bring you?" Dhurke's eyes were so gentle, so curious and sweet from where they met Datz's, searching for an answer, searching for the answer. What could Datz say to that?

"It brought me home." Datz held his gaze for a second, but tore his eyes away before his words could sink in. He heard something from Dhurke, something that sounded like a gasp, before the leader stood.

"And where is 'home'?" Dhurke moved in front of him, crowding his vision, and Datz could do nothing but look into his eyes, breath catching when he realized how... nervous he looked. Nervous, but anticipating. Expecting. Excited.

"Home... is right here."

Dhurke kissed him.

The final sentiment, while left unspoken, was clear as day to them both.

Love is something I feel for You.
