Wei Wuxian was practically bouncing in the passenger seat of Nie Huaisang’s car as they drove to their Lamaze class. He was so very excited to meet and mingle with other Mommies to be!
While this wasn’t his first child (his beloved little A’Yuan was already in the 2nd grade, which made him sad every day), it was his first pregnancy. He and his husband, Lan Wangji, were expecting their first little girl in just a couple months.
“You’re going to bounce my niece out early, Wei Wuxian.” Nie Huaisang teased. He shot him a pout, rubbing a tender hand over his abdomen.
“Never. She can stay in as long as she needs.” He cooed. Huaisang chuckled, shaking his head.
His best friend was also his brother-in-law. Nie Huaisang and Jiang Cheng had married last summer, and were currently expecting their first child. While Wei Wuxian considered himself a pro parent, and their big sister Jiang Yanli was amazing with his cute nephew, Jin Rulan, he wasn’t sure how his baby brother would be as a father.
His other brother-in-law, Lan Xichen, was an excellent mother to his little nephew, Nie Yuming. They would be celebrating the little boy’s 2nd birthday next month, and Huaisang was having a blast taking over the planning. Last weekend at their family dinner, Xichen had sat under Mingjue’s arm as they watched Huaisang pull out sample after sample for the party.
“Is this a birthday party for a toddler, or a damned coronation?” Mingjue had grumbled.
“Uncle Mingjue, that’s a bad word. Pay up!” A’Yuan had said, smirking at him as he held up a hand. Mingjue sighed, but passed over a quarter anyway.
Wei Wuxian was pulled out of his musings as Huaisang parked the car. His excitement returned in full force when they parked, and he practically jumped out of the car as soon as it was stopped.
“Wei Wuxian!” He looked over at the sound of his name to find Xie Lian and Mu Qing standing at the entrance. Between them stood 2-year-old Hua Lang Ying, Xie Lian’s adopted son.
Xie Lian married Hua Cheng three years ago. A year into the marriage they adopted their first child, a girl named Ban Yue. The child was now six and in Yuan’s class. Then last year they had adopted a little boy, Lang Ying. And now, just a month after Wei Wuxian was welcoming his first biological child, so would Xie Lian.
Mu Qing was one of Xie Lian’s childhood friends. He had married their other childhood friend, Feng Xin. When they first started dating, Feng Xin found out that he was going to be a father from a previous fling. Little Feng Cuo Cuo was 2 as well, and wasn’t too sure about his stepparent’s swollen abdomen.
Just behind them was a swollen and grumpy looking Shen Qingqiu. He was just as pregnant as Wei Wuxian, but his baby was at least 2 pounds larger and he was miserable.
“On your bladder again?” Wei Wuxian guessed. Shen Qingqiu nodded, wincing a bit as he stepped up and on to the sidewalk.
“Yeah. I love him, I do, but ugh. I’ll be happy to have him in my arms instead of my stomach.” He grumbled. Wei Wuxian patted his shoulder, sending him a sympathetic smile.
“Come on, let’s go in. It looks like it’s about to start raining.” Mu Qing said, looking up at the dark clouds approaching.
“Good idea.” Xie Lian agreed, tugging on Lang Ying’s hand.
“Hopefully it gets done quickly. I hate it when A’Yuan has to climb into the car in the rain.” Wei Wuxian sighed.
“I feel the same way about Ban Yue.” Xie Lian agreed.
Everyone took their places on the floor. Wei Wuxian took out Xie Lian’s items for him so he could focus on getting his son set up in the corner. He watched as his friend pressed a kiss to the top of Lang Ying’s head and then turned towards him. When he spotted that everything was ready for him, he shot him a warm smile.
“Thank you, Wei Wuxian.” He murmured, joining him on one of the mats.
“Anytime! I know you’d do the same for me if A’Yuan was here.” He shot him a wink before turning to chat with Huaisang.
The class always seemed to fly by for Wei Wuxian. Their instructor was an older lady with a sarcastic sense of humor that seemed to resonate well with everyone. Little Lang Ying entertained himself in a corner with a set of colored pencils and a coloring book.
“Phew! Thanks for the workout, teach!” Wei Wuxian called out as he and Huaisang helped each other up. Xie Lian rose gracefully to his feet before helping Mu Qing, and then together they helped up Shen Qingqiu.
“A’Lang, time to go.” Xie Lian called to his son.
“Yes Mama.” The boy said before packing up his crayons. He handed them to Xie Lian, who put them in the backpack. He then picked up his son, offering him a warm smile. Lang Ying returned it, wrapping his arms around Xie Lian’s neck and snuggling in close. It always warmed Wei Wuxian’s heart to see a parent and child so openly affectionate with one another.
“Pretty sure I’m going to beat you to our shared due date.” Shen Qingiu’s commented as he approached them. Wei Wuxian turned towards him, shooting him a confident smirk.
“Nah, I already called dibs on July 12th.” Wei Wuxian teased.
“Not if my son falls out of me on that day.” Shen Qingqiu shot back.
Yes, the two were currently sharing a due date, much to Wei Wuxian’s amusement. He had never expected something like that was possible. When he voiced that to his bestie, Huaisang had laughed and pointed out that there was a finite number of dates, so it wasn’t that uncommon.
“Well speaking of sons, I need to go and pick up mine. See you next week everyone!” He waved.
“Come on, A’Lang, let’s go pick up Ban Yue.” Xie Lian agreed.
Huaisang and Wei Wuxian waited for Xie Lian to get his son settled in his car seat and then together traveled to the elementary school their children attended. It was a pretty painless process to join the carpool line. He and Huaisang looked up trashy celebratory gossip to pass the time. When the bell rang, they both turned their attention to the doors of the school
When Wei Wuxian spotted his big sister holding the hands of Ban Yue and A’Yuan, he grinned and waved towards the. A’Yuan waved back, practically bouncing on his feet.
Jiang Yanli sent him a wink before approaching Xie Lian’s car first.
“Hi Xie Lian! I hope your day is going well.” He heard her say.
“It is, thank you for asking, Yanli. Ban Yue, did you have fun at school?” Xie Lian asked his daughter.
“Yes Mama. Hi Lang Ying, did you color a new picture today?” The little girl was asking as she got settled in her booster seat.
Wei Wuxian tuned them out as his sister approached him next.
“My sissy! And my baby boy!” He exclaimed dramatically. Huaisang burst into laughter, but pressed the button to open the back of the van. Yanli helped A’Yuan into his seat before pressing a kiss to his cheek and closing the door. She then leaned in and kissed Wei Wuxian’s cheek.
“How are the babies today?” She asked, reaching in to rub his stomach. He smiled, leaning over to rest his head against her shoulder.
“We’re great. How are you today?” He asked. She sent him a soft smile before pressing a kiss to his forehead.
“I’m wonderful, A’Xian. Be safe getting home and give A’Cheng and Lan Wangji my love.” She said. He nodded, leaning up to press a quick kiss to her cheek before leaning back. Yanli stepped away from the curb and waved as Huaisang put the car in drive. Wei Wuxian waved goodbye as they pulled out of the parking lot..
A’Yuan rambled the entire way home, much to Huaisang and Wei Wuxian’s amusement.
“Bye Uncle A’Sang!” A’Yuan waved as Huaisang pulled away from their house. Wei Wuxian gently ran a hand through A’Yuan’s ponytail before leading him inside.
After putting up his shoes and his bookbag, his son went off to play. Today was a no homework day, as he had revealed during his earlier ramblings, so all Wei Wuxian had to do was work on dinner.
He was putting in the last vegetable into his stew when the front door opened.
“Baba!” A’Yuan cried, and the sound of him running down the stairs practically echoed into the kitchen.
“A’Yuan, don’t run in the house, please!” Wei Wuxian called, even as an amused smile crossed his lips.
“Sorry Mama.” His son called. There was a pause before the sound of heavier footsteps was heard. Wei Wuxian smiled when his husband’s arm wrapped around his waist, and a warm kiss was pressed to his cheek.
“Lan Zhan.” He greeted, turning to kiss him gently.
“Wei Ying. Smells good.” His husband murmured between kisses. When his hand covered his abdomen, Wei Wuxian turned around and give him a proper kiss. He let out a happy little sound as his husband parted his lips, gently brushing their tongue’s together.
“Eww.” A’Yuan complained at their feet. Wei Wuxian pulled back to smile down at their son before turning to his husband and tenderly wiping away some of the saliva that was clinging to the bottom of his lip.
“Go shower, Lan Zhan. A’Yuan, go with him. This will be done as soon as the bread is done.” Wei Wuxian explained. His husband and son nodded before heading upstairs.
After dinner and his own shower, Wei Wuxian was in his happy place. He was cuddled up in his favorite cozy blanket with a pillow behind his back and his husband at his side. Lan Zhan was running a hand through his hair as they watched some random thing on the TV. Times like this were even more precious these days, as they would soon be disrupted by a new baby. Yuan was already in bed, tucked up with several of his favorite rabbit toys.
“Love you, Lan Zhan.” Wei Wuxian yawned.
“Mn. I love you too.” His husband murmured before pressing a kiss to the top of his head.
As Wei Wuxian dozed off to sleep, he couldn’t be happier.
