Work Text:

Rain. Thud, thud, thud, dripping and running over the roofs and tiles and wooden cracks and leaking in with a persistent drip, drip, drip, little rivulets hitting the window frame like a glockenspiel. Trees in the rain. Juno and Mila in a boat alone, in the rain. The whole camp, dismal and blurred in the rain. Not at all typical at this time of year. Not that Fennel would consider themself a meteorologist, of course.

The campers sat languidly around the cabin, their spirits perhaps blunted by the pervasive hum of rain slamming into the roof and the cold dampness seeping into the air. Even those most energetic campers (to Fennel’s slight relief) seemed subdued, congregating at the edge of the cabin and wistfully staring into the forest. Still, even keeping track of wayward teenagers (without Soren, as well) seemed ideal in comparison to the monotony of… this. Dealing with their saturated plants was a… daunting concept.

A hesitant knock at the window broke Fennel from their uneasy thoughts, a hasty clatter of a fist against glass. Pink hair, dripping, filled their vision, blurred through the glass but still so undeniably that of someone so foolish as to run through the rain for… some unknown reason.

 ‘Yvonne?’

She was drenched, dripping onto the wooden floor with a pathetic shiver as Fennel rooted through their cupboards for a towel, yet still smiling doggedly, their eye makeup miraculously unsmudged (to an almost disturbing degree).

‘Why did you come over here? And did you leave Joshua?’ Cold and wet, Yvonne rather reminded Fennel of a ferret.

‘Wanted to see if you were alright without Soren. You know, since your campers can be kind of a lot. Also, I missed you.’ Fennel chuckled softly, draping the towel around Yvonne’s shoulders.

‘You ran through torrential rain because you missed me?’ Fennel’s hand found Yvonne’s, warm and steady.

‘Sure did. Oh, have you seen the lake guards? They’re just… in a boat. Any idea why?’

‘Not a clue, love. Not a clue.’
