Cold Nights

Summary:

It's cold and you can't sleep so Jamie warms you up.

Work Text:

You were in bed, blankets pulled up to your neck, the warmest pyjamas you could find on.

You couldn’t sleep, the night bringing in a deep cold that couldn’t be settled. The rain pattered lightly against the window, the wind swirling in the background and you could’ve sworn you heard thunder.

You pulled the covers up further, trying to warm the tip of your nose and fingers.

James was snoring lightly beside you, only in a tank top and pyjama bottoms - much to your bewilderment. The covers only came up to his hips and you wondered how he could possibly be warm right now.

You huffed, rolling over onto your side and rubbing your hands together, curling up into a little ball so that you could preserve your body heat.

You lay there for a while, just listening to the wind and rain, wishing that it was a warm summer's evening. Your eyes were heavy, but with each attempt to sleep, a chill went through you and you were forced to grab at the blanket laying atop of you.

You looked to James again, thinking about how you could just squeeze in underneath his arm and warm yourself up without him waking. You thought more about it and with each passing second, the idea seemed more appealing.

Quietly, you shuffled towards him, stopping once to make sure he was still sleeping soundly before settling yourself down on his chest.

He was unbelievably warm and you felt the heaviness of your eyes finally be relieved.

Then he shifted, and his arm came up to wrap around you, holding you tightly because he knew that you’d move and start apologising about waking him up if he didn’t.

“You okay, baby?” He kissed you on the forehead, rubbing up and down the length of your arm.

“I didn’t mean to wake you up,” you started. “I’m sorry, Jamie, I was just so cold.”

He chuckled, deeply and you could feel the vibrations through his chest. The sound relaxed you and his slow movement on your arm and the warmth radiating from him, coaxed you further into your slumber.

“You could’ve told me. You know I wouldn’t mind.” He stopped stroking your arm and instead, placed his hand into your hair, lightly massaging your scalp.

“I know but you looked so peaceful.” You looked up toward him, chin resting on his chest. He was watching you, blue eyes soft with love.

“I wouldn’t have been so peaceful if I knew my girl wasn’t happy.” You smiled at him, averting your gaze and burying your face in his strong chest.

James stroked at your hair a couple more times before pulling at your waist, manoeuvring you so that you were laying on his chest, legs tangled together.

One hand was on your waist, the other playing with your hair again. You looked at him, not sure if he was comfortable having your full weight on top of him, but he just smiled and shook his head, pushing your head against his chest.

“Comfortable?” He asked, warm hands all over you.

You smiled, the cold dissipating.

“Very.” You yawned, settling yourself against him.

“That’s it,” he continued to stroke your hair, arm around your middle, holding you close. “Rest now, sleepy girl.”

The last thing you felt was warmth.

And James’ lips against your head as he gently urged you to sleep.
