Sonic was scared to hold Shadow's hand.
He wasn't sure why, but the thought of holding Shadow's hand made his heart race and his palms sweat.
He tried to tell himself it was because Shadow was taller and stronger than him, but he knew that wasn't the real reason.
The real reason was that he was scared of what holding Shadow's hand might mean.
What if Shadow didn't want to hold his hand? What if he thought Sonic was weak?
All these thoughts raced through Sonic's mind as he stood there, hesitating, his hand hovering inches from Shadow's. He could feel Shadow's eyes on him and the weight of his expectant gaze.
And then, before he could chicken out, he did it. He reached out and took Shadow's hand in his own.
For a moment, they just stood there, hand in hand, not saying a word. And then, finally, Shadow spoke.
"Why were you scared to hold my hand, Sonic?"
And Sonic, feeling braver now that he had finally taken the plunge, looked Shadow in the eye and said, "'cause, i-it's an important step in a relationship."
Shadow stared at him for a moment, and then, unexpectedly, he grinned and kissed the blue hedgehog's hand. "I think that's a much more important step in a relationship."
And Sonic, feeling his heart lighten, smiled. "Me too, shads."
