Work Text:
Amity was enamored with the Human Realm; they had such funny and different ways of doing things compared to witches in the Demon Realm. On their first night there, Mrs. Noceda, no, Camila, as they had been told to call her, had been washing dishes by hand! Gus quickly stepped in to cast a spell to do the task so she didn’t have to, but Amity supposed it made sense given that humans couldn’t do magic.
Their, what was the word Luz used? Technology? Yes, that was the word. Amity was amazed by it! The television, or Tee Vee as Luz called it, was a lot like their crystal balls, only she couldn’t contact people on it, and you needed some little black box to command it. Phones had been another thing Amity had loved. Those were basically the equivalent of scrolls. You could go on the ”internet,” too, which supposedly held all human knowledge and so much more. Laptops were a mix between the two, it was basically a phone with a bigger screen and a separate portion containing letters and a “track pad” that helped you open folders and “apps”.
Luz had loved showing her all the wonderful things you could do on these strange machines. She particularly liked showing Amity her collection of games, the latter having taken an immediate liking to Moonfarm Valley. It was a strange game, but oddly calming. Her girlfriend had to put a time limit on the game so that Amity couldn’t play on it all day.
“It’s not healthy to stare at screens all day, Batata,” Luz would say. “You’ll ruin your eyesight.”
Amity had pouted when she discovered the aforementioned time limit that her human had set, but resigned herself to the fact that Luz was simply looking out for her. That, and she was offered compensatory cuddles and having human books read to her instead.
While Luz was at school though, Amity and her friends would take turns looking up various topics of interest in an effort to learn more about this strange world and to help them blend in more. Gus and Hunter had taken an interest in different animals and wildlife, and both were very eager see that there were more Emmilines and Flapjacks in this dimension. Willow had gravitated towards Human Realm plant life and vegetation. Amity had started reading up on human history, equal parts amazed and horrified at their many accomplishments and atrocities. She had also discovered “e-books,” which were copies of physical books stored by the thousands, no, millions on the internet.
Luz, for that matter, had also been very excited to show her a page called “Archive of Our Own.” It held vast amounts of fanfiction… So, so much fanfiction. She’d become addicted when the Latina had shown her the Good Witch Azura fandom. She spent hours at a time, even going into the night, reading and re-reading several of the fan-made works. Luz had to confiscate her phone now at night, and no amount of pouting and pleading had been able to get it back.
And so, Amity found herself trying to find one of the many e-books that she had downloaded onto Luz’s laptop, but the new device was still very foreign to her. She tried to remember the directions she was given to access her new literature.
Let’s see, she thought. Activities, then click on Files, then Downloads. She clicked the folder, but it hadn’t opened. Right, click it twice, and quickly.
Before Amity did that, however, she noticed an oddly named folder amongst the others. It had an unusual name, especially when compared to the others. They all had very descriptive names like “Videos” or “Documents”. This one was very vaguely named “Stuff.”
Unable to contain her curiosity, Amity opened the folder to see another group of folders within it. There were three folders, specifically; One was named “Diary,” which Amity had immediately decided against opening, those were her girlfriend’s private thoughts. She opened the next folder, named “AO3Downloads,” and what she found were dozens of PDFs and HTML files of various fandoms worth of fanfiction. She navigated back a folder and opened the last folder, this one named “Drawings.” She knew Luz liked to draw, heck she drew her computer wallpaper, a rendition of the Owl House, and quite a good one, her Sweet Potato was a good artist in her opinion. She had even taken time to help them all draw pictures of their family members, to help them remember what they looked like, and to remind them that they all had something worth working to get home to. Amity remembered that being a very difficult day for Hunter…
She opened the first picture, it was one of her, Eda, and King sitting on top of the owl House. The next one was of a very animated Hooty, the following one was all of their palismen sleeping together on their makeshift bed in the shack. There were drawings of her mom and Vee, and of all her Demon Realm friends, but none of her girlfriend so far. She kept looking to find drawings of the shack they had been working out of, and of Gravesfield High, which was surrounded by trees covered in leaves of various shades of orange, yellow, and brown.
She scrolled through the many drawings, taking time to admire their intricacy and beauty, but was still sad that there were none of her. She was about to exit this folder to go read her e-books when she noticed another folder, hidden at the bottom of her other works called “More Drawings.” She curiously opened that folder, not knowing what to expect, and clicked on the first file.
It was a drawing of her, in the purple dress that she wore when they told Camila they were dating, she was tucking her hair behind her ear, a small blush spread across her cheeks. There was a drawing of her and Luz cuddling on a beanbag, and one of Amity casually scrolling on her phone while wearing one of Luz’s oversized hoodies. Amity found one of her sitting on a blanket, staring off at something in the distance. She was wearing a yellow sundress and hat, with the fall foliage as a backdrop. A small breeze seemed to be blowing, making her hair flow in the wind. She remembered this day; it was her first date in the Human Realm with Luz; It was as if Luz had taken a picture of her...
Luz drew this from memory? It’s so realistic… Is this how she sees me?
A blush found it’s way onto Amity’s cheeks and ears. There were at least as many pictures and drawings of her as there were of all the others. She kept scrolling, and found another one of her holding Ghost; she was wearing a cat ear hoodie…
Oh… wow… art…
Amity was focused on the screen in front of her when Luz opened the door to her and Vee’s room.
“Hola, Hermosa,” she said as she looked through her backpack. “I stopped by the library after school. I picked up a geography book and a romance novel I thought you might like.”
Amity snapped her head away from the laptop screen, frantically shutting the lid and tucking the device under her arm.
“Oh, Luz, you’re home!” came her nervous reply. “So, how was, uh, how was school? Learn anything… interesting?”
“Nah, never anything interesting going on there.” She paused to take in her girlfriend’s flushed state. She moved to sit on the bottom bunk with Amity, setting aside her backpack and books at her desk along the way. “You doing okay, Ams? You look really red.”
Luz moved to put a hand to Amity’s forehead to check her temperature when she saw the laptop. Gears started turning in her head when a concerned, questioning gaze turned into a shocked and embarrassed one. Amity noticed Luz’s face heat up, and suddenly she was sporting a matching blush.
“I, uhm,” Luz started, trying to find her words. “I’ll leave you to whatever you were doing, sorry for interrupting.” She quickly averted her eyes, looking anywhere but at Amity. “I’ll send you instructions on how to clear your history, for privacy’s sake, I know that stuff’s kinda private.”
Luz moved to get off the bed and quickly made her way toward the door.
“Luz, wait!” Amity got up and tried to catch Luz before she left. She managed to catch the human by her wrist and slow her departure.
“Really, Amity, it’s nothing to be embarrassed about, it’s completely normal. I- I won’t tell anyone, promise!”
“No, Luz, can you look at me?” Luz didn’t meet her eyes, but did turn to face the young witch. “I was looking at some of your drawings. I’m sorry for snooping through your folder…”
“Oh,” Luz whispered, letting out a relieved sigh. “It’s alright. Did… did you like them?”
“Yeah, they were really good, Batata. The one of me on the picnic was cool! Can I watch you draw sometime?”
“Uh, yeah, totally, that works…Want me to read some of the new books to you?”
“Sure,” She kissed Luz on the cheek. “By the way, what did you think I was doing?”
Luz stammered out a quick “Nothing!” as her face got even more red, and she insisted that they go read now, please. Amity made a mental note to ask Vee what she meant later.
