Work Text:
Everyone in the hero industry knows how dangerous their jobs are and just what they’re sacrificing each day they return to the scene. As students, Class 1-A of Yuuei Hero Academy was faced with ruthless villains on one of their first weeks of training. From there on out, the class had countless encounters with these villains and were well acquainted with what they were sacrificing in their line of work.
As a hero, it was their job to surveil, fight, save, and rescue citizens. Whether that means jumping into the fray to fight someone or if that means running into a burning building on the brink of collapse so they can get that child at the very top, as they were trapped and unable to get to the ground. Accidents like these always left an impression on young heroes and how hard their jobs would be, both working and in the aftermath. Not everyone can get saved in every situation. As hard as that may be to come to terms with, it was true and was the reason why many heroes attended weekly mandated therapy sessions.
Midoriya Izuku, student 18 of Class 1-A, and his hero name, Deku, was knowledgeable about the casualty rates and well acquainted with disasters. He was quick to jump in to save others with an unwavering sense of determination and a smile that competed with All Might. He made the citizens feel safe from a distance and with those who were in the act of being saved, made them think that everything was going to be alright.
His fighting and confrontational disposition brought him to a villain attack on a commercial apartment building filled with people and had a mall underneath. Being one of the first to arrive, he heads in without a second thought, aching to save others and keep the civilians safe.
Though, he isn’t alone. He’s accompanied by his best friend and fellow hero, Dynamight. He, along with Izuku, joins the fight and does their best to take out the villain and protect the citizens without causing them or the building harm.
Assuredly, the people are being escorted out by other heroes as the building’s posters begin to deteriorate around them, signifying that a collapse was possible. All in all, it meant that Izuku and Katsuki had to wrap up the fight and evacuate along with any lingering people inside the commercial building.
With a final blast from Dynamight, the villain collapses where he stands, effectively passing out in front of the two heroes. Dynamight, who’s steadily approaching the unconscious man, signals Deku to search around the area for citizens who still need to evacuate.
Zooming through the floors, Izuku has yet to find anyone. He rises higher and higher into the apartments, calling out to any possible people who may be trapped or unable to move to get no response. He feels the building groan and shifts as the scrambles quicker to scan his surroundings. After clearing the building, he rushed back to Dynamight and villain to see if he needed any assistance. He’s sure that Dynamight has it handled, but it’s just to be sure they made it out okay.
When Izuku gets there to the bottom of the basement level, he sees Dynamight, lugging the villain on his back toward Izuku.
“Deku, what are you doing here?”
“I came back to check on you. There weren’t any more civilians on the upper floors. Need help carrying him?”
With a scoff, Dynamight refuses Izuku’s help. “Just get outta here, Deku.”
He shrugs, saying that he’ll follow Dynamight out. Some part of Izuku feels that if the building comes down atop Kacchan and the villain, Kacchan wouldn’t be able to simultaneously blow up the debris effectively with an unconscious person in such close proximity. So, really, Izuku’s just tagging along because he wants to be assured that if the building begins to crumble atop them all, he’d be able to blow away the debris and clear the path for everyone.
Unfortunately, with Izuku’s luck, his fear come true when the rumbling stops and everything falls silent around the two heroes and the knocked-out villain. The two exchange looks of suspicion and weariness before hearing a startling crack of the concrete above them.
Izuku moves, pushing the two people in front of him closer to the exit at a startling quick pace.
“Move, move, move,” Izuku whispers under his breath.
He feels the dust shift around him and before long, the space that was once behind them closes in. The whole ground below the three men rumbles and is unsteady. Dynamight, who’s letting out a heavy stream of curses begins to book it toward the exit, keeping an eye out for falling concrete above them.
“Go!” Izuku shouts, letting out blasts of his air force above, shooting at the rubble to protect himself and the two people running to the still-clear exit.
He’s running along with them until an enormous boulder falls in front of Izuku, blocking his immediate way. If he had been any further forward, it would have crushed him where he stood. He wants to jump above it but can see the rubble following where the boulder came from. He decides it’s not an option and beings to run around the rock, trying to keep a lookout for more plummeting metal and concrete.
“Deku!” Kacchan shouts. Izuku can’t see his friend from where he’s standing, but he’s quick to assure the man he’s fine.
“Don’t worry,” he says. “I’ll be right behind you. Just get out of here. I’ll be back with you in a second!”
Izuku moves forward, faster and faster as the green lightning surrounding him gets brighter. He dodges left and right until he sees the exit, a figure looming at the doorframe, Kacchan.
Izuku smiles, running toward his friend, craving to be free from the falling building and the rising dust that cakes his lungs.
Because of his eagerness, he doesn’t notice the tripping hazard of rubble in front of him as he’s focusing most of his attention on the falling rocks and metal shrapnel. World moving in slow-motion, Izuku’s body heaves forward, plummeting to the ground just as quickly as the rocks above him.
He falls, trying to brace himself with his arms. Not even a second later, his view of the exit is blocked yet again. Only this time, he’s trapped; he’s surrounded on all sides.
He stands, arms sore from the impact, and blows the wreckage away. It’s dark.
It’s so dark around him that it’s impossible to notice the charging ruins of a pillar plunging toward his body from behind.
His world gets darker, and the exit that was once in view fades.
