His hands grabbed the rope, but as soon as he began to go up it, something reached behind him and wrapped around his chest, pulling him back and slammed him against the wall, dropping him to the ground. He could feel the vibrations of the earth under his fingertips, getting stronger and faster, and he knew that there was no time. The demodogs were coming. He was as good as dead.

Steve doesn't escape the tunnels as easily as Dustin or the others did. And, it turns out, being trampled by demodogs is just as bad as being attacked by one, especially with previous injuries that Steve already had thanks to Billy Hargrove.
