From the Author:There’s something…off about The Gentleman Pirate. It takes Ed a little while to put it all together, longer than it would have if Stede weren’t so fascinating, so goddamn distracting. It’s little things, at first: how Stede is not a good enough pirate to be that blasé with his personal welfare, how confident he seems that things will work out in the end, the glimmer in his eye he gets when danger comes close and whispers in his ear. It’s maddening and familiar, too, because Ed swears he’s met Stede before. Maybe on a ship somewhere, or in town, a shared look before a shared bed; though, if the sex were as good then as it is now, Ed’s sure he would remember. As Ed watches and waits — and desperately tries not to fall in love — he grows more and more convinced that the truth is a terrifying third option; a monster parents tell their children about at night and all sailors dread.
