A sneaky phone call ruins Will's life. This scene stuck with me and the idea for the cover was born. I drew the pictures with Procreate and also created the animation with this app on my iPad.
The story is set 50 years in the future, anno 2072, so I chose a futuristic cityscape with silver skyscrapers, streets and green spaces as the background. Not much has changed at Will's home. There are still boring brown curtains hanging in front of the windows. The depth-of-field effect (sharp focus on the subject, out-of-focus background) makes the images look vivid and exciting. The subject stands out clearly from the background and thus automatically becomes the focus of the viewer.
In the future, cell phones still exist and they play an important role in the story. Will receives a call that he can't disconnect. In the end, he is outed as Omega and secretly photographed in his house. In the next scene, the photo is sent from the census app to the phones of the president's cabinet members so they can rate Omega's appearance. The cover as well as the animation reflect this exact moment.
The black cell phone surface and dark gray border look cold and menacing against the light, soft background of the cover. The male hand of a cabinet member (ruler) holds the cell phone. Thumb and fingers enclose it tightly and so does the omega photo. Will (powerless) is symbolically encircled and trapped.
The futuristic font immediately conveys that the story is set in the future. The word Omega is red and framed by corners, reflecting the result of DNA analysis on Will's cell phone. There are two spellings: OMEGA as in the title and O-M-E-G-A as in the chapter.
I created a total of four cover variations because the title of the story is in quotation marks. The words on the cover without quotation marks are aligned straight below each other and in the center. This makes it look severe, unforgiving, and uncompromising. The poor Omegas in the story are in for hard times. The cover with the "quotation marks", on the other hand, seems a bit softer, not quite as accurate.
For the animation, I used the same red and blue tones as the cover image. Will and the cabinet member each receive a phone call, one man is shocked and the other is amused. I wanted to portray the dynamics of this event. So quickly, even in the future, personal information can unintentionally end up in the wrong hands using dirty tricks.
