The Truth Comes Out

Summary:

(Takes place a week after the last mini story in the one shot prior to this one.)

Moon had been working overtime all week. Sure it had been hard since he couldn't spend time with his Starshine, but what was even harder was seeing how disheveled they had begun. It seemed like Sun never slept and they were basically falling asleep standing up. When they almost collapsed on him Moon decided that was the final straw.

He hated doing this but he needed answers and fast. Their was one place he knew he could get them. Foxy.

Notes:

I give ye hell ye wee bastards.

Actually, compared to the chapter I wrote for the original story earlier this is pretty nice. Only thing I need to say is that Sun passes the fuck out but that's gonna be me if I don't finish this soon and get some sleep.

Yes I posted twice in one day. Don't get used to this. It's just because it's the weekend and I didn't want to actually be productive in life.

Now, without further ado, let's get into the shit show.✨✨✨

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Moon ended up having to work overtime for over a week. He wasn't all to happy about it as is. He hardly got to see his Sunrise and was always too exhausted to do anything. But that wasn't the worst of it.

The worst of it was seeing how disheveled Sun had become. It seemed like Sun never got any sleep and they were practically falling asleep standing up. Moon often caught them nodding off for a second before jumping up and going to do something. It worried him a lot. He wanted to know what was happening so he could help! But Sun refused to tell him what was going on, brushing him off whenever he asked.

"I'm fine," they would say, waving him off.

"Stop telling me you're okay! Do you even sleep anymore?!"

"Eh, I have a nap scheduled for next Tuesday." Sun would then laugh it off and wave Moon away. There was one time though, the last fight they had like this, where Moon wasn't letting it go with that answer.

"Sun! If you keep this up you're going to seriously hurt yourself! You're gonna end up killing yourself," Moon yelled, pleading with his partner.

Sun rolled their eyes as they sat on the couch. "Why are you even still here? Don't you have to go to work?"

"I'm still here because I care about you, you asshole!"

Sun quickly stood up and turned to face Moondrop. "I don't need your help! I just want the pain..." Bad mistake. Standing up that fast took too much energy and Sun collapsed.

"Sun!" Moon dove to catch his partner. Eclipse heard the crash and came running from the other room.

"What happened?!"

"I-I don't know... They- they just collapsed and-, " Moon tried to speak through his tears.

"Hey, hey. I'm sure they'll be okay. Let's just get them to bed." Eclipse said quietly. He took Sun from Moon's arms and brought them to their room.

Eclipse glanced back to see Moon in the doorway, practically shaking. "Hey, Moon, come here," he said softly, opening his arms for Moon. Moon immediately came over and sat in his lap accepting the hug.

"Wh-what if they don't wake up? What- what if I never get to see them again?"

"Hey, hey. None of that. Sunrise is a hell of a lot stronger than they look. Trust me. They'll be just fine. I also know they wouldn't want you thinking like this."

Moon gave a small nod and calmed down a bit. After staying in Eclipse's arms for a moment he got up. "I'm going to make some calls."

"Alright. I'll keep an eye on Sun."

Moon walked out of the room and headed to the balcony that ran off of their living room. Once outside he pulled out his phone and dialled a number. It ran twice before the other person picked up.

"Hey Moon- man! Whatchya need?"

"Hey Nessie. Listen do you- do you think you can cover my shift tonight?"

"uh... Yeah, what's wrong? You seem pretty upset."

Moon looked up at the sky as the tears started falling down. "I- it's Sun. They... They just collapsed in the living room. I- I don't even know what's going on! They wouldn't tell me anythingand thenthey passedoutand Idon'tknow whattodo."

"Woah, woah. Jesus Christ! Don't worry about the fucking shift! If it were Ricky I know damn well I'd be freaking the fuck out and you'd cover me. Now go be with your partner!"

"T-thanks Nessie."

Vanessa simply hung up, clearly rushing him along. Moondrop had one last call he had to make first, before he went back to Sunrise's side.

Foxy.

Moon needed answers and he knew Sun wasn't going to give them. Foxy was normally equally tight lipped. But he had a rule when it came to keeping secrets. The fox would only keep them as long as they didn't put anyone in harms way. Sun passing out? That would be considered in harms way.

The phone barely rang once before Foxy picked up. "The hell they do this time?"

"You see, the thing is I don't know. Sun won't tell me shit." Moon said, leaning with his arms rested on the railing.

Foxy let out a sigh. "If they won't tell ye I.."

"They just passed out Foxy."

Moon could practically hear the Foxy lean forward, instantly on edge. "The hell ye mean passed out?!"

"Out cold. Collapsed in the middle of the living room. The two of us had got into a fight again. I was trying to get them to tell me what was going on and they refused. Things got a bit heated and then suddenly they just passed the fuck out."

Moon could feel frustrated tears start dripping down. How many times was he going to cry today? Foxy was equally frustrated, letting out a growl on the other side if the phone.

"I didn't know the damned bastard had driven themself that far or I would have told ye already. I've been telling them for years that they needed to tell ye but they refused."

Great. So this had been going on for years. Just great. Moon stood up straight and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Alright. I'm listening."

"Sun has horrendous insomnia. The damned bastard has went for weeks at a time without sleep before. They refuse to tell anyone because they feel like it's stupid.

"They also have horrid separation anxiety. Tend to go into panic attacks whenever they're alone. I've been keeping a close eye for several years because I found out they hurt themself in the past while having a really bad panic attack. Nothing like that has happened since we reunited at the Mega Pizzaplex.

"The main issue now though, is the fact that the two of them combine to create this monstrous beast that ye be dealing with now. Their separation anxiety causes them to have even worse insomnia than they normally do. Their sleep deprivation also causes them to be more prone to panic attacks which suck even more energy out of them.

"This shit combined is probably why Sun conked the fuck out. Yer best bet is probably to stay with them for a few days so they can get some rest."

Moon felt like he couldn't breath. The pieces had clicked together and he realized the full extent of what his overtime had done. Him working, kept him from Sun who in turn couldn't sleep. They had also been struggling with separation anxiety. All the while they chose to suffer in silence refusing to tell Moon.

"This whole time when I was gone..."

"Aye, lad. Now get a move on. They need ye more than ever."

Moon muttered his thanks and hung up. Why didn't Sun tell him anything? Sure Sun was ultimately the stronger one, but that didn't mean they didn't need help. God, why did they do this to them self?

Moon walked back to their room to find Eclipse leaned up against the wall by the door. "You're back. Take cars of everything?"

Moon simply gave a short nod. His tail had been flying around wildly through all of this. Now it had finally relaxed, hanging gently behind him. Eclipse took note of the shift in mood and slipped out of the room, shutting the door behind him.

Moon crawled into bed with Sun, curling up on their chest. He balled part of Sun's shirt up in his fists. His tail wound around Sun's leg possessively. Moon closed his eyes as he felt the tears come back. God, he really was a mess. The sobs tore through his body as he clung onto Sunrise.

Sun started to stir. What the hell happened? Why did their head hurt like a son of bitch? Also why did they hear crying?

Moon couldn't hear the groan Sun let out over his own sobs. Sun finally looked down to find Moon clinging to them and crying.

"Baby, wha's wrong? Why ya cryin darlin?" Sun asked, their accent coming through strong. They tried to soothe Moondrop, wrapping their arms around him. They rubbed his back softly while humming softly.

Finally Moon calmed down a bit and looked up. "Sunny?"

"Ight 'ere darlin."

Moon threw himself at Sun and wrapped himself around their neck. "Sunny! I was so worried! YoupassedoutandididntknowwhathappenedsoicalledFoxyandthenhetoldmeandthenipanicedandthjsisallmyfaultand..."

"Woah, woah there sweet'art. Calm down an' take a deep breath. Kay? Kay."

Moon did just that. He laid down on Sun's chest and closed his eyes. He took in deep breaths, breathing in Sun's smell of too much coffee and lemon cookies.

"Dere we are. Now can ya tell me what 'appened?"

Moon gave a small nod. "You- you had passed out in the living room during our fight. I was p-panicked and- and I didn't know what was going on. Eclipse came and h-helped me get you to the room."

Moon paused to catch his breath and collect his thoughts. Sun simply laid there and rubbed his back, waiting for their boyfriend to finish. They also made a mental note to thank their brother later. Sure he was Moon's childhood bestfriend, but Sun still felt the need to thank the giant ass mother fucker for looking after their Moondrop.

"I-i still didn't know what- what had cause you to- to pass out! So I-i called Foxy and asked them. He told m-me about your insomnia and- and your separation anxiety. P-please don't be mad..."

Sun let out a sigh. God, he didn't deserve his Moonshine. He rubbed Moon's back, pulling him closer. "Course I'm not mad at chu darlin. Chu were worried bout me. How could I be mad at chu for that?"

"B- but..."

"No buts. Now come 'ere. How long ya been cryin for?"

Moon didn't respond. He simply snuggled up closer to Sun. "Nessa is covering my shift tonight. Eclipse probably isn't gonna let either of us work for the next week either."

Sun chuckled. "Guess I 'ave ya all tuh myself for awhile. Can't 'elp but notice the fact that ya dodged my question though."

Moon grumbled a bit before responding. "...bout an hour... "

"An hour? Oh no no no. Dis just won't do. Come 'ere. Yer stuck cuddlin me til t'morrow whether ha like it or not."

Moon started giggling. "I love you Sunny."

"I love ya e'en more, Moonlight. Now le's get some rest. Lord know I need it."

And that's exactly what happened. Eclipse refused to let the two of then work for the next two weeks. Even his partner chimed in and ended up helping to take over their shifts. Vanessa and Ricky pitched in as well. Vanessa either worked Moon's shifts or found someone to take them for the next two weeks. Ricky brought over a bunch of new books and games to keep Sun from going stirr crazy while they were forced to recuperate.

Sun simply spent most of the time basking in the presence of their Moonlight. They really were having a hard time without him around and all this one-on-one time definitely helped them to feel a bit better.

During this time Moon also watched the change in his Starlight. Sun seemed so much happier with Moon being around 24-7. They were less panicky and jumpy, more relaxed, and a lot less tired. They almost seemed like a whole new person.

No more of Moon coming home to find they had been crying. No more finding them asleep in the worst places. No more of Sun searching for him in a panic. No more of having to pull them out of their thoughts as their mind took them down paths they shouldn't go. And most importantly, no more nightmares.

Sun had been plagued with nightmares ever since the event. Constantly waking up gasping and crying. Searching for Moon to find comfort. One day Moon decided to ask Sun about it.

"I noticed you haven't had nightmares at all this week. What were they about, anyways?" Moon didn't really expect an answer. Sun never answered him anyways.

Sun chuckled and leaned against the kitchen counter. "Truth is that they were all about that night. It wouldn't stop playing over and over in my head. Every time you left I kept thinking 'what if he doesn't come back?' and 'what if they take him from me again?'. Guess it took a toll on my nerves and caused the nightmares." Sun just shrugged it off. "I know it's stupid though."

Moon could see the years forming in Sun's eyes. That's another thing that had changed. Sun was so much more open now. They told Moon almost anything he asked. It was weird, considering how closed off they had been in years prior.

Moon walked over and bent down to hug Sun. "I don't think it's stupid. I'm honestly glad you told me."

Sun let out a nervous laugh and hugged Moon back. They let the tears fall down, a small smile plastered on their face. "...thank you..." They whispered, so quiet Moon could barely hear it.

Moon did though and he couldn't help his reaction. His tail started wagging and he buried his face deeper into Sun's shoulder out of embarrassment. Sun let out a hearty laugh and Moon smiled. He hadn't heard Sun laugh like that in years.

Later, when Sun was taking a shower Moon stepped out on the balcony to make a call. Today's conversation had finalized a decision he had been going back and forth on. But what Sun said made up his mind and he made the call.

He then trudged into their room just as Sun stepped out of the bathroom. "'Ello dere darlin. Come to get a look at the view?" Sun teased.

The combination of the teasing and Sun's accent had Moon turning bright red. He went and sat in the bed with his face in his hands. After a moment he calmed down and let his hands fall between his legs,  elbows on his knees.

He heard rustling behind him as Sun out on a pair of pajamas. Moon decided to just come out and tell them. "I- I made a desicion."

"Mhmmm. And what's that Moonlight?" Sun asked, their accent gone again.

"I quit my security job."

Everything went silent. Moon let out a sigh. He knew this was gonna be hard. He just didn't know how hard.

"We really didn't need the extra money anyways. We make more than enough running the daycare, even if we decide to get our own place. Plus now I can tell just how much of a strain me working all night was putting on your mental health. So, yeah. I quit."

Sun came around and got on their knees in front of Moondrop while grabbing both his hands in theirs. All Sun had on were a pair of grey pajama bottoms but Moon didn't reallh care. "Moonshine. You did not have to quit your job for me. Sure we didn't need the money but I know you did it because you enjoyed it."

"Well yeah, sure. I enjoyed it back when the hours were decent and I got to do something I loved. But I love worworking at the daycare a lot more. And lately the security job has been taking a lot more out of me than it was worth." Moon let out a light chuckle as he started rubbing circles on Sun's thumbs.

"Plus you've seemed so much happier now that I'm home all of the time. You seem so much healthier and when it comes down to it even our relationship is better. I can't take that away from you. Shit, today I finally heard a genuine laugh from you that I haven't heard in years!"

"Are you sure you wanna do this though, Monny?" Sun questioned apprehensively.

"Positive."

Sun let out a sigh of relief and stood up to give Moon a hug. "I'm glad. To be honest I really fucking hated you working that job all the time."

Moon snickered. "I can tell."

Sun laughed and gave Moon a squeeze. Moon then desided to flop back on the bed, pulling Sun with him. Sun let out a yelp of surprise but then started laughing with Moon. Sun then pushed them self up with their arms.

Moon blushed at the sight and looked away, his arms falling to his sides, and even his tail went limp. Sun smirked down at him. "Now what kind of game were you thinking of playing when you pulled me into such a position huh Moony?"

Moon immediately shoved Sun off and Sun flopped onto the bed next to Moon cackling with laughter. Moon sat up and watched Sun, a smile spreading across his face. He really was glad his Sunshine was finally happy. Moon then pounced on Sun and started tickling them til they couldn't breathe.
