“All right, we’ve gone over the plan. It has to be quick, in and out. No one will notice us.”
Aubrey was mischievously rubbing her hands together as a wide grin was plastered across her face. Behind her was a meek boy with dark hair looking somewhat hesitant.
“Do we really have to do this Aubrey…? What are we even gonna get from sneaking in a supermarket at night?”
Aubrey looked back at her boyfriend in disappointment.
“You just don’t get it do you? It’s not about what we get from it, it’s about the fun to be had during it!”
“Still, stealing is just wrong..”
Aubrey fully turned to Sunny and made a pleading face.
“Please Sunny.. Just this once, you promised me you would go with me!”
Sunny turned a bright shade of red.
“F-Fine. Let’s just be quick about it.”
Aubrey’s eyes lit up, seemingly burning with passion.
“YAY!”
“Aubrey! You’re gonna get us caught before we even step foot in the place.”
“Ah.. right.”
Aubrey walked up to her boyfriend giving a peck on the lips leaving him an even brighter shade of red.
“Yay.”
Sunny had effectively been frozen in place.
The parking lot was dark. Well, dark with the exception of the light being emitted from Gino’s. Aubrey and Sunny were standing in front of the supermarket, Aubrey putting her face against and looking through the glass while Sunny begrudgingly “covering them”.
“Alright, look’s clear.”
“Again, do we really have to do this? Can’t we just snuggle together on the couch in the comfort of our home while falling asleep watching some movie.”
Aubrey got giddy at the words “our home”. Sunny knew what her life at home was like so he always welcomed her to his house whenever she needed. Something so simple made her so happy.
Of course, she didn’t let him see that. He might take it as a sign of surrender.
“While tempting, no can do. We already made it this far Sunny, we’ll be fine. Trust me here.”
Sunny scoffed.
“If you call loitering at the front of Othermart looking like delinquents obviously trying to cause trouble “making it far”, then sure. We’ve made it soooo far.”
Aubrey ignored his snarky comment continuing to survey the inside of the store.
“It’s completely empty from the looks of it,the place is ours. Let's have at it.”
Sunny turned around to face the supermarket. He stared at what was an obvious lock.
“Well damn, looks like we won’t be entering tonight. Oh well, anyways, what movie would you rather watch? I was thinking between the first Spaceboy film or-”
“Hold it right there, we’re not calling it quits, at least not just yet.”
Aubrey pulled a hairpin out of the pocket of her jacket, then tinkering around with the lock at hand. Sunny raised a brow on this.
“Not your first time I’m guessing?”
Aubrey didn’t break concentration, keeping her eyes on the lock.
“Would you believe me if I said this was really my first time?”
“Nope, not for a second.”
Click
The lock had been opened.
“Well, then you’d be completely right.”
Aubrey was quick to open the door and quickly walk in, Sunny hastily followed.
As soon as he stepped foot into the supermarket, he was hit with a new, unknown feeling. What they were doing had just hit him. He began to sweat.
“A-Aubrey, let’s make this quick. What are we getting?”
Aubrey snickered.
“Oh my little sunshine, haven’t I told you already? It’s not about what we’re getting, it’s about the experience.”
Sunny was clearly not satisfied with this answer.
“Well, I guess since we’re here we could pass by the candy store and grab some taffy for Kim..”
“Yeah, sure, anything to get us out quicker.”
Aubrey became amused by Sunny’s uneasiness. She found it cute.
They walked past the aisles filled with groceries and made their way into the candy store. A thought hit Aubrey’s head.
“Oh my god, what if Candice found out about what we were doing.”
Sunny shuddered at the thought. The owner of the candy store, Miss Candice, was always extreme, especially when it was about her store. Sunny didn’t really hate anybody but even he found her to be quite annoying.
Sunny had suddenly stopped walking forward as he was stopped by Aubrey’s hand. He looked at her questioningly.
“There’s a camera right there.”
Aubrey pointed to her left. The feeling Sunny had when he had first entered the supermarket had come back. Aubrey noticed the small hint of fear in his face. She grabbed his hand.
“Hey, it’ll be fine. Right now the camera can’t see us. Here’s what’s gonna happen, I’m gonna take the dangerous side and grab a bag of taffy for Kim since I know how to navigate around it. When I say go, you’re gonna quickly run to the aisle in the back. The camera can’t spot you there.”
Sunny still felt uneasy, but slightly better about this. His hand relaxed.
“W-What do I get?”
Aubrey shrugged.
“Just get anything you feel like having, oh and if you don’t mind grab me something too. Preferably a chocolate.”
Sunny nodded.
The camera turned to the left, leaving some space for Aubrey and Sunny to get through unseen.
“Go.”
Sunny quickly scurried to the aisle at the back of the shop, Aubrey had split up from him.
He carefully looked through the aisles, trying to find something good for Aubrey. He came across a Yehsreh’s chocolate bar. Despite the incredibly hard to pronounce name, it was definitely one of the better chocolate’s compared to the rest of the choices. He grabbed it for Aubrey and then scanned around for dark chocolate. He only managed to find one bar, and it was from some unknown brand too. He shrugged it off and put it in his pocket.
“Hey, Sunny.”
He heard Aubrey’s voice whisper out, he peeked at the edge of the aisle and was met with her cyan contacts also peeking back at him.
“You don’t want anything from here, do-”
Her voice was cut off by the sound of footsteps. Both Aubrey and Sunny quickly crouched down and looked towards the source of the sound.
Shit.
A security guard was walking through the candy store slowly. Judging by the way he was moving, he was probably just patrolling around. That means the picked lock had gone unnoticed for now. However, this didn’t stop Aubrey and Sunny from freezing in place.
Sunny’s breath hastened as he hugged against the aisle he was behind. The only one providing him cover.
His heart was beating out of his chest faster than it had ever had. A small bead of sweat dripped down his forehead and onto his hoodie. This feeling, it wasn’t fear, it was nothing like fear.
No, for the first time in Sunny’s life he had truly felt..
Exhilarated.
This is a moment that would burn deep into the crevice of his mind. The tense atmosphere, the risk of being caught, the reward of escaping. It put a smile on his face.
THUMP
Sunny heard something heavy fall down, something in the direction of Aubrey. His excitement had been replaced with worry.
His mind raced, the guard surely heard that. It is why the footsteps had suddenly stopped and begun moving again. Aubrey was going to get caught if he didn’t do something and fast.
Sunny mustered up the courage and grabbed a couple bags of NmN’s. With a moment of hesitation, he threw the bags to his left and ran out of the aisle and into another one.
Sure enough, the footsteps quickly redirected towards the noise Sunny had made. He saw Aubrey’s eyes filled with worry hesitantly peek through and scan around the room. Once she caught sight of Sunny, her eyes relaxed. She glanced at the camera and gestured to make a break for it as she silently ran to the exit.
Sunny had begun to follow, but hesitated for a moment.
How could he leave without claiming his trophy?
As soon as Sunny and Aubrey had made it out of the candy store, they ran full blast to the entrance to OtherMart and gunned it straight through the parking lot, only stopping when they were nearby Faraway Park.
Both began panting heavily as soon as they were able to rest on something. That panting then turned into snickering, which then turned into full blown laughter from both of them. Aubrey tightly embraced Sunny.
“Hah.. Haha.. You are a natural at this, Sunny! I mean that distraction with the candy..”
Aubrey had tried to formulate a full sentence, but she was too busy still trying to catch some air.
“Aubrey.. That was… Fun. Like- really fun.”
Aubrey had caught wind of the smile on Sunny’s face causing a grin to appear on her face as well.
“See! It’s about the experience.”
Sunny put his hand in his pocket and pulled out an item that left Aubrey frozen.
“Sunny… are those?”
Sunny smirked.
“Yep, it's the guard’s handcuffs.”
Wow, he really WAS a natural. Maybe too much of a natural.
“Well, let’s keep this a one time thing huh? If we make it home quick, we might be able to sit through a movie before we completely pass out. Wanna test that theory?”
Sunny smiled as he spun the handcuffs with his finger and let them launch away into some bush.
“With pleasure.”
Aubrey grabbed Sunny’s hand as they made their way to the comfort of their home.
