Work Text:

The colors swarmed past Emmets face. It seemed to have no end, just falling, forever. So this was the end, huh. The battery lost from his back, the cries from the friends he barely made no longer audible. He was alone, again, and probably gonna die soon. A tear fell from his eye, before he closed them and tried to drown out the colors and any fear. All the time of social isolated flashing through his head, meeting Lucy, becoming the special, everything up until then. It was all over.

"Emmet!"

An all to familiar voiced called. Emmet opened his eyes, not believing it was true. It was hard to focus on with all the bright lights, but he could never mistake that blue blob gaining on him.

"Hold on! I'm almost there Emmet!" Benny shouted.

Emmet was about to call back, when he noticed the colors fading. He looked behind him, some sort of ground was coming up. "BENNY!" He screamed, preparing for impact. He was maybe about one second from hitting the ground when he was swooped up, and put on Bennys back. His heart beating fast and hands shaking. "I got you Emmet. It's okay, it will be okay."

Emmet turned on the TV. Trying to stop his shaking hands and leg, as well as his racing heart. It was six years ago, but things still reminded him of that time. And lately, it's been coming back more. Probably due to stress, or because he was working on a skyscraper for his job, and it was pretty tall. Whatever the reason, it sucked.

He got up and got a cold glass of water, before focusing on the TV. Trying to distract his thoughts with the mating rituals of birds on the Nature Channel. They have such strange dances.

Resting his head on the armrest of the couch, he didn't dare close his eyes. He listened to his phone buzzing for a few seconds. His phone buzzing? He suddenly processed that he was indeed getting a call, but too late. It had stopped ringing and went silent. He tried to turn it on, but his phone decided today was a good day to bring the most frustrating thing in the world. He'd press the on button, it would do nothing, so he'd press it again, but it would be Turing on then, soo it would turn off. And it kept doing this.

Narrowly avoiding throwing his phone, he finally got it on. Reading the text message he received from the caller.

Hey Emmet! Don't know if your busy right now, and that's why you didn't answer your phone, but wanna hang out when you can? 🚀

Emmet chucked at the signature emoji. His cheeks getting slightly warm. Benny was one of the really small amount of things that could calm him down really easily. It would be nice to go to his place.

He ended up making plans to meet at Bennys place in an hour, and sat around waiting for the time to pass

He knocked on the door, waiting for it to open. But it didn't. He was about to pull out his phone, when Benny floated down from the roof. "Hey Emmet!" He greeted, as enthusiastic as always. "Hey, Ben!" Benny led the way inside, no longer floating. They walked to the living room, where there was a bowl of popcorn on the table. "I made popcorn!" Before Emmet could respond, he was dragged to the couch. "Your energetic today." He teased. "Yeah Wyldstyle gave me an energy drink." "Oh no." Benny plopped himself on the couch, grabbing the popcorn. "Want some?" He and Benny ended up watching some random Netflix movies, hours passing too quickly. He had arrived at twelve, but it was already four thirty. He didn't want to leave though, and Benny didn't want him too. So he ended up staying till it was getting dark, and he knew he should go. Dreading going back to his house, he sat up on the couch. "It's getting pretty late, I should probably go." He said, causing Benny to frown. "Aw man, alright. It was fun though!" Benny walked with Emmet outside, waving goodbye when he drove off. It was midnight now. Emmet left alone with his thoughts. He normally want bothered this much, but he couldn't help it. Before he could really think, he was texting Benny.

Hey, are you still awake?

Yeah! You alright?

Emmet?

You good?

He left his phone on read. Instead grabbing his keys and getting in the car.

Not sure exactly why he did this, and not remembering over half the drive, he found himself and Bennys door.
Before he could even knock, the door swung open. "Emmet?" Benny asked, concern visible on his face. "I.. Sorry.. I don't know why I came. I shouldn't have. I--" "Hey, your good. Come on in. It's cold out." Benny grabbed Emmetts hand, getting him a seat in the kitchen. "Hey. Are you... Thinking about it again?" He asked, worried. Emmet nodded. "Here, let me get you some water."

As Emmet drank his water, he could feel himself start to calm down. Benny was by his side, willing to help if needed. "I'm sorry, I really shouldn't have bothered you so late at night." Benny chuckled. "Nah, it's fine, really. I couldn't sleep because of that energy drink anyways." Now it was Emmets turn to chuckle, before he turned serious again. "I don mean this in a harmful way, but I can't help but think, why do you care so much for me? Even when I only knew you for a week I could see it. I'm nothing special, or whatever. So why?" He asked, turning his head down. "Well..." Benny paused, as if unable to say anything. Emmets chest tightened, suddenly afraid of the answer. Maybe he really was just worthless. "You're a really great person Emmet. Any sane person should see that. You are special, you really are. I saw that in you. I saw someone who could make you laugh for hours. I saw someone who could make the most sour person smile. Of course I cared for you. How could I not?" Emmet finally smiled, more than just a chuckle. "Man, your happiness is contagious." "I do it on purpose."

Emmet was about to get up, when suddenly his arms were restrained to his side in a tight hug. "wh-- Benny! Benny I don't mind hugs but youarechokingmebennyIcantbreathe." Benny released him, apologizing a few times. "If you don't choke me, I would love a hug though." That earned a big grin from Benny. Soon they were comfortable in each other's arms. A slight blush creeped on to Emmets cheeks.

He looked up, locking eyes with Benny. This made his cheeks a bit redder, but he couldn't look away. Benny apparently could though, as he buried himself back in to the hug. "Thanks for the comfort, Ben. You never fail to make me smile." Benny whispered something Emmet could quite catch, before taking a deep breath. "I'm glad. I wan't you to be happy. I love y--" He froze, and tensed. "Oh my God I am so sorry, shit. That was really inappropriate right now I really didn't..." He trailed off, letting go of Emmet and looking down. "Oh my god."

Emmet, instead of being offended or weirded out like Benny expected, was glad.

"Benny. I love you too."
