She woke up rattled, not quite afraid, though finding the bed empty beside her was unsettling, in the circumstances.

“Clint?”

“Right here.” He appeared through the door with ever-perfect timing.

Natasha sighed with relief, pushing her hair back off her face, failing to ignore his inquisitive stare. “Weird dream.”

“Weird how?” he asked, sliding back into bed beside her. “Come on, you know you wanna tell me.” He grinned.

“You were... different. I wasn’t there, but I saw you. You were married, with kids. You had a life. A farm, a dog, the whole nine. You were happy.”

She was staring at nothing, but seeing the picture perfect scene she could never have belonged to, until Clint’s hand cupped her cheek.

“You sure I was happy? I mean, seriously, I could just have been bored. Sounds pretty boring to me.”

Natasha managed a half-smile. “You’re cute.”

Clint smiled back. “I’ll take it, but just so we’re clear; no you, no happy, okay? You’re stuck with me, Romanov. I’m not going anywhere for anyone but you.”

Pulling him down on top of her, Natasha kissed him hungrily. No matter his promises, she didn’t want to sleep or to dream anymore tonight.
