"This is spooky," Edward declared solemnly when the crow let out a raucous noise after it perched on the large wooden cross where a miserable-looking scarecrow was tied.
"Hu-hu," his daughter nodded. "It looks like your husband and his pet."
Eddie had to admit, this scarecrow wearing burlap stitched at multiple spots, with straw oozing from its sleeves as well as its collar and a thick rope knotted around its neck, plus its feathery companion seemed familiar.
Stephanie and him shared a look, complicit, then... they bursted out laughing, far too pleased with themselves.
Ed must admit, this corn maze is bigger than he expected when he dragged there his boyfriend (husband according to numerous fake identity papers they have recourse to, including the ones they used to go on vacations these two weeks of Halloween holidays) to enjoy a funny family day out.
Jonathan loves Halloween. He usually saves his favorite date for his biggest villain scheme of the year.
This year however... he decided otherwise.
Edward, Jonathan and their non-officially adopted daughters Stephanie Brown and Charlotte Gage-Radcliffe went on a road trip, they quit Gotham, quit the State and planned on having a good time far from the Rogues Gallery, the bats-and-birds, the mob, the heroes and all those shenanigans.
Far from the Riddler and the Scarecrow.
"I think we lost Charlie and Jon," Stephie announced, holding Edward's right hand in her little one.
When entering the typical Halloween attraction, they parted in two teams who must find one another into the maze. So far nevertheless, none of the kids with a parent or older sibling who watches over they came across to matched a sweet blue-eyed redhead and a tall lanky bag of bones with eyes as piercing as those of a bird of prey.
"My thoughts exactly," Ed concluded on the same played dramatic intonation. "I believe that's a mission for us, Captain: we must search clues to find your li'l sis and a scarecrow dressed like a university professor as his permanent Halloween disguise."
"Resembling this one, but less spooky," Stephanie rounded off by granting a renewed attention to the straw man whose pointy hat covered half of its pumpkin face, on which was carved relatively scary features.
"... Not sure if mine is really less spooky than 'this one'."
Like the kiddos they are at heart (at the difference Steph being ten, she is a legit child while Ed is twenty...), Eddie and Stephie giggled some more before returning to their labyrinth exploration and evolving deeper between the vegetable walls.
As soon as they stumble upon the second half of their family, they will keep Jonathan abreast of the recent encounter: they found a brother scarecrow for him and a bird buddy for his pet crow Nightmare.
So many surprises into this corn maze.
