A Better Life

Summary:

Inuyasha contemplates his past with his mother to the home he now shares with Kagome and their unborn child.

Work Text:

Inuyasha circled his arms around his wife's body, his hands lazily rubbing her large stomach. She heaved a content sigh and closed her eyes while his temple pressed against hers. The roaring fire crackled in front of them while he took a moment to take in their surroundings.

Inuyasha had never been the type to care about material things, which was a product of his upbringing. However sitting here with his pregnant wife made him reminisce of a time before that, when his mother was alive. He noted that the roof was in need of repairs again because of his over zealous nature, much to Kagome's chagrin. The hut was a little small, which was fine now but what about when the baby grows up?

He remembered the estate where he lived in with his mother. Being a half demon was never easy but he was able to ignore it back then. He had his mother and they wanted for nothing. But what about his kid? He was brought back by a soft hand on his cheek.

"Where'd you wander off to just now?" Kagome asked softly, turning slightly in his embrace to look at him better. He took her hand and placed a light kiss on it's back.

"I was remembering the place I lived at with my mom." He answered and she smiled at him.

"I've always wondered what kind of place that might have been! I picture a cute little cabin in the woods somewhere and you getting into trouble all the time." She giggled.

"That's definitely not how I'd describe the estate." Kagome blinked at him several times before it sank in.

"Wait, the ESTATE? You mean you were a rich kid?!" She exclaimed in shock.

"You don't have to act so surprised!" He huffed back but she laughed again.

"Sorry! I just wasn't expecting it!" He lightly pushed his fists on either side of her head with a fake growl but it just incited more giggles. "What got you thinking about it?"

"I guess I'm just worried whether we're ready for the baby. Like is the house up to shape? Is it big enough? Or do we need to do those reno-whatevers you mentioned before. Because it was hard enough being a half demon. Quarter demons pretty much unheard of. I guess I just want a better life than I had for this baby." He said in a low voice, his eyes thoughtful yet distant. Kagome scooted until she was completely facing him.

"Don't you see? You're already doing that! You're here and you're worrying about her! That alone means how much you care and because of that this baby has all she needs!" She grabbed his hand and sat it on her belly. "Feel that?" Inuyasha smiled at the tiny kicks against his hand. It wasn't the first time by any means but it never ceased to amaze him. "She already loves you, dummy!" She teased playfully with a laugh and he couldn't help but join her with a smile of his own.

"Yeah I guess you have a point there." Kagome settled back into her previous position and he rested his chin ontop of her head.

"You realize if you didn't show off in front of Koga, the roof wouldn't be an issue though right?" He froze and stubbornly looked ahead.

"Not my fault the stupid wolf wants to come here and run his mouth." He muttered.

"You also realize he only does it because he's jealous?" She reminded him in a gentler tone, which made Inuyasha smirk and huff with pride.

"Heh! Obviously! And I'll throw it in his loser face every chance I get!"

"All I ask is that you show off away from the house, please?" She begged.

"Yeah, yeah I'll try..." Kagome sighed in mild exasperation then smiled to herself. She leaned back against him, enjoying the warmth that emanated from him and the fire.

"You forget..." She began and could practically hear his ears flick with curiosity. "I didn't come here to live in some mansion or anything. I came back to be with you, which I am, so I'm happy."

"How do you say such cheesy stuff so easily?" He grumbled.

"Well someone has to keep your grumpiness in check, don't they?" Kagome heard a low, irritated growl rise from his throat, which only proved her point.

"I'm happy too..." Inuyasha said quietly with a hand once again on her belly. She couldn't see the blush on his face but she knew him well enough to know it was definitely there. Their house might not be an estate but she loved it and every imperfection it had. "I'll fix the roof tomorrow." She made a soft humming noise in agreement. Her eyes soon closed and she was asleep. It always surprised him how she can so easily fall asleep sitting up but maybe that was just one more thing that made them the perfect match for each other. Carefully he moved her so she was laying across his lap with her head against his chest. Inuyasha held her close. Maybe she was right. They didn't have much but they were warm, fed and happy, which was a hell of a lot more than he had most of his life.
