This will be updated intermittently. I have no set schedule and I do this for fun :)

Chapter 1

Notes:

This is my first reading the books type fic, so if I get anything wrong feel free to correct me.
Always fond of constructive criticism.
If you have any cute scenes with these characters you've always wanted to see in a fic, I will see what I can do to accommodate you.

Chapter Text

Sadie Kane slid behind the wheel of the battered car the Brooklyn Nome kept in their garage, Walt and Anubis getting in the other side. Sadie twisted in her seat to watch the others getting in, Amos squashed in the back with Carter and Zia. Starting the car, they drove out into the road and off on their journey.

For once, they didn’t have a quest or deadline; they were going on a road trip. For a while, they drove in near silence, until the intermittent pop of Sadie’s bubblegum drove Carter to tentatively ask if they could put music on – Sadie was historically a very tetchy driver.

Sadie hummed a while, then agreed.

“Any suggestions?”

Anubis tried to say something, but Walt slapped a hand over their mouth. Sadie raised an eyebrow.

“He wants to listen to jazz,” Walt explained, having regained control of their mouth.

In the back, Amos raised a hand.

“I wouldn’t mind jazz,”

Seemingly taking this as permission, Anubis reached towards the sound system, before Sadie slapped his hand away, her eyes still on the road. When the road was clear again, she glared at him ferociously.

Sadie Kane, everyone.

“Do we have anything in the glove box?” asked Zia.

Walt leant forward and started shuffling through. Eventually, he came out holding something, Anubis’ smile showing through on his face.

In his hand was something Sadie and Carter recognised quite well – the recording of their first adventure/quest/string-of-near-death-experiences/whatever you want to call it.

Glancing quickly back at her brother’s nervous expression, Sadie grinned.

“Put it in,” she said.

A few moments of whirring, then Carter’s voice echoed forth from the sound system.

We only have a few hours, so listen carefully.

Carter cringed at his old voice, and everyone looked at him in various states of smugness and commiseration.

If you’re hearing this story, you’re already in danger. Sadie and I might be your only chance.

Everyone settled in to listen, Carter resting his head on Zia’s shoulder, who smiled down at him indulgently.

Go to the school. Find the locker. I won’t tell you which school or which locker, because if you’re the right person you’ll find it. The combination is 13/32/33. By the time you finish listening, you’ll know what those numbers mean. Just remember the story we’re about to tell you isn’t complete yet. How it ends will depend on you.

“You’re being very dramatic, Carter,” Amos remarked. Carter groaned and buried his head in Zia’s shoulder.

Chapter 2

Notes:

So just to clarify, this will be only focusing on the bits of the books I feel are most important/entertaining. If I skip a favourite scene of yours, drop a comment and I'll see if I can put it in.

Chapter Text

As Carter's voice continued from the speaker, and the others giggled at his storytelling, Sadie's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

You see, in her eagerness to humiliate her brother, she may have forgotten that she was on these tapes too.

After six lawyers, two fistfights and a near fatal attack with a spatula (don't ask), they won the right to keep Sadie with them in England.

Sadie may have smirked at that. The Spatula Incident was near-historic.

She zoned out again as Carter described his experience growing up with Dad - it had been interesting the first time, but she was driving right now.

I decided on the slightly less dangerous path. I went to retrieve my sister...

"Six years in England," I muttered, "and she thinks she's James Bond,"

Sadie swatted me without looking back and kept creeping forward.

Walt and Anubis both let out a chuckle at the same time, prompting Sadie to glare across at them.

She hasn't changed, Anubis gravely informed Walt.

Walt chuckled again.

Carter's voice continued to narrate their dad's mysterious conversation with Amos, and he cringed as well.

"Were you trying to sound mysterious?" Sadie asked.

"No!" he insisted.

The recording then described their stop at Cleopatra's Needle and their incredibly mysterious entrance to the museum and Rosetta stone.

When the description turned to their dad's summoning of Osiris and the subsequent arrival of Set, Carter's eyes flickered to Amos. He didn't seem bothered, staring calmly out of the window, until Carter's recorded voice described Sadie throwing a rock. At Set.

The car exploded with discussion, and Walt surreptitiously turned off the tape until everyone else quieted down.

Chapter 3

Notes:

Thanks to everyone who commented.
And just a reminder that if you have a particular scene you'd love to see please tell me, I'll do my best to accommodate you.
Also, if you have a non-canonical interaction you'd like to see me write (while they're reacting to the recording) then tell me that too!

Chapter Text

You threw a rock at Set?!" Amos almost shrieked.

"Yeah," said Sadie, popping her gum again.

Zia seemed speechless.

"What?" asked Sadie, turning around, "and I didn't exactly know who he was at the time,"

She turned the recording back on, effectively silencing further discussion. The recorded-Carter continued describing events.

He turned, and for one terrible moment his face appeared in the flames. What I saw made no sense. It was as if someone had superimposed two different faces on top of each other -one almost human, with pale skin, cruel, angular features and glowing red eyes, the other like an animal with dark fur and sharp fangs. Worse than a dog or a wolf or a lion-some animal I'd never seen before. Those red eyes stared at me, and I knew I was going to die.

Behind me, heavy footsteps echoed on the marble floor of the Great Court. Voices were barking orders. The security guards, maybe the police - but they'd never get here in time. The fiery man lunged at us. A few inches from my face, something shoved him backwards. The air sparked with electricity. The amulet around my neck grew uncomfortably hot.

The fiery man hissed, regarding me more carefully, "So... it's you," The building shook again.

At the opposite end of the room, part of the wall exploded in a brilliant flash of light. Two people stepped through the gap- the man and the girl we'd seen at the Needle, their robes swirling around them. Both of them held staffs.

The fiery man snarled. He looked at me one last time and said, 'Soon, boy,' Then the entire room erupted in flames. A blast of heat sucked all the air of out my lungs and I crumpled to the floor.

The last thing I remember, the man with the forked beard and the girl in blue were standing over me. I heard the security guards running and shouting, getting closer. The girl crouched over me and drew a long curved knife from her belt.

"We must act quickly," she told the man.

'Not yet,' he said with some reluctance. His thick accent sounded French. 'We must be sure before we destroy them.'

I closed my eyes and drifted into unconsciousness.

"Wait," Zia said, "Was that my shabti?"

"Yeah," said Carter, "How much of this do you remember?"

"Fragments," she said, "Most of this is new to me,"

Sadie's voice was now the one coming out of the speaker, telling of the police clean-up from the explosion. The entire car (minus Sadie herself) laughed at her irritation with the police.

A family disease, perhaps? Can knowledge of boring Egyptian stuff be hereditary? With my luck.

"Well," Sadie pointed out once the latest round of giggles had passed, "It's not like I was wrong,"

...and I waited. And waited.

I don't like waiting.
