Work Text:

“Yin Yu, Yin Yu!” Quan Yizhen, fully dressed in a cute dog onesie, calls as he throws open their door, a small little lump nestled in his arms. He had been sent out the store only 20 minutes earlier, needing to get candles and matches he and his boyfriend could put in pumpkins. He had been sent with money and the command to not take any matches out and play with them, and returned with said matches, candles, and something extra his boyfriend would never have expected.

Yin Yu, dressed in normal black clothing but sporting unusual cat ears, peeks out of the kitchen.

“Yizhen, did you get the candles?” He asked, a pumpkin in his hands. Quan Yizhen nodded, holding up the bag. Yin Yu’s eyes narrowed. “What else do you have?” Quan Yizhen smiled sheepishly, walking to him and showing him the black cat in his arms.

“Say hiiiiii.” Quan Yizhen said in a singsong voice as his boyfriend’s jaw dropped.

“Yizhen! You can’t just pick up cats!” He scolded.

“She’s a black cat! On Halloween, Shixiong! You know how dangerous it is!” Quan Yizhen argues. And yes, Yin Yu does know and he is proud of his boyfriend. But at the same time, it was dangerous. Not to mention, he didn’t know how they’d keep it. “Besides, it’s definitely a stray.”

“How do you know?” Yin Yu asked, taking the bag of candles and matches so Quan Yizhen could hold her up.

“She’s scarily thin, do we have any chicken?” Yin Yu nodded. The cat was also very muddy, and Yin Yu’s heart melted a bit.

“Give her to me, I’ll go bathe her while you do your pumpkin.” Yin Yu outstretched his arms, Yizhen handing him the tiny cat without argument. The cat itself didn’t seem to have any arguments, curling up again. Yin Yu winced, he could feel how thin she was. They both went to the kitchen, Quan Yizhen to get started on his pumpkin and Yin Yu to get some chicken for the cat. He opened the fridge, pulling some leftover sliced chicken out to heat up and cut more.

After closing the fridge, Yin Yu chose that moment to look at his boyfriend, who was pulling a knife out of the cabinet. Instantly panicking, Yin Yu threw the chicken down on the counter and intervened, taking the knife carefully from his accident-prone other half while balancing the cat carefully.

“Absolutely not. You’re not allowed to have knives, use safety scissors or something.” Yin Yu said, lightly patting his head. Seeing Quan Yizhen pout at him with puppy eyes, he rolled his eyes. Luckily, it wouldn’t work on him. He just gave him a peck to satisfy his puppy-like heart. Quan Yizhen’s pout melted into a dopey smile.

“I like your pumpkin.” He said, looking at the finished pumpkin on the clean counter by the fridge. Yin Yu smiled.

“Thank you, Yizhen. I’m going to give her some chicken and then I’m going to go bathe her, please be careful in the meantime, okay?” He pressed a kiss to his lips again, going to open the container of chicken. He lightly heated it up, pouring it on a plate and chopping it up. Setting the cat down on the counter to eat, he kept one eye on her so she wouldn’t fall and the other on his boyfriend, who was emptying the guts of his pumpkin. Since Yin Yu had cut the top off for him, it was easy for him to get started. It was a mess, however. When the cat was done eating, Yin Yu scooped her up again and headed upstairs.

Bathing her wasn’t as terrible like he thought it would be, she was incredibly well behaved. Yin Yu’s heart warmed up more to the idea of keeping her. His heart was captured more when she purred and presented her belly to him while he was drying her, not even scratching him when he rubbed it and instead purring louder. Fuck, Quan Yizhen had truly picked the perfect cat to steal his heart off the street. But of course he did, that was one of his boyfriend’s charms. Picking up strays that were perfect for him (and Yin Yu by extension, in this case). He made sure the cat was completely dried before carrying her downstairs in front of the kitchen and heading in to see that his boyfriend had completely butchered his own pumpkin. Yin Yu couldn’t help but wince at what had become of the poor pumpkin. His boyfriend was a little too accidently destructive sometimes, though not when it was important not to be. Oh well, he would let him off the hook this time… Almost.

“That’s how you chose to carve your pumpkin? It’s called ‘carving a pumpkin’, Yizhen, not ‘brutal pumpkin murder’. This could pass as an episode of those shitty crime shows Hua Cheng likes to watch..” Yin Yu teasingly huffed, looking at the mess his boyfriend managed to make with safety scissors of all things. Quan Yizhen just looked at him like a confused puppy and he sighed. Quan Yizhen smiled and saddled up to his boyfriend, leaning down and nuzzling against his neck.

“You like it though, because I made it.” Quan Yizhen commented. Yin Yu had to focus so as to not blush, even though his boyfriend definitely knew what he was doing.

“Shut up.” He muttered, his boyfriend now giving his neck gentle kisses. A meow sounded from below them and both looked down to see their new cat looking up at them expectantly. Quan Yizhen instantly abandoned his affection to scoop it up, grinning. If not for how happy he looked, Yin Yu would’ve been offended by how easily he was replaced. That was a lie, he was offended. Curse their new cute cat and the fact she stole his attention and he couldn’t blame her!

“Yin Yu, Yin Yu! What are we going to name her?” Quan Yizhen asked, his smile blinding. Yin Yu just sighed, accepting the fact their little family had officially become a family of three.
