Work Text:
Jin Ling scowled at the little kids screaming and running down the street, waving around their stupid plastic pumpkin buckets full of candy. This was the worst Halloween he had been forced to suffer through in his entire life.
Why? Because not only was he a full grown adult and being forced to trick or treat with half of his uncles (the other half being missing for various reasons) and his cousin, but he was doing so dressed up as fucking Friend Bear from Carebears. He was starting to miss last year’s Addams Family costumes.
He was knocked out of his inner dialogue by Wei Wuxian, dressed as Cheer Bear, bumping his shoulder with his.
“A-Ling, stop looking so depressed! This is fun!” Wei Wuxian giggled, swinging he and one of his husband’s arms between them. Wen Ning looked entirely out of place in his Harmony Bear outfit, but Jin Ling knew the man was, a, completely whipped for his uncle, b, would never have a complaint about their matching costumes and, c, loved Carebears. Jin Ling had the secret suspicion that this year's costumes were his fault, and he mentally cussed the man out. He would’ve glared, but he did actually value his life. Especially when he had no clue where Lan Wangji was.
But you know who didn’t value Jin Ling’s life? His own traitor of a boyfriend. As soon as he had heard about the Carebears onesies, Jingyi had ducked out despite his only friends both having to do it. He had stayed home to binge watch Halloween movies, quite literally pushing Jin Ling out of the house to his uncles when the latter started complaining about how little his boyfriend loved him if he was going to watch shitty movies without him. Jingyi had also gave him a big eyeroll and pushed him out harder for that comment, which was kind of fair.
What wasn’t fair, however, was having to deal with certain uncles bickering (Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian), certain uncles risking public indecency with their husbands (let’s be honest, it was only Wei Wuxian and Nie Huaisang trying, the rest were ignoring them), his cousin tripping every other step, and just the entire situation in general.
Ears going red at a comment from Nie Huaisang he definitely didn’t want to hear, Jin Ling turned to his (about to be least) favorite uncle with a glare.
“Control your husband!” Jin Ling at Jiang Cheng, dressed in a Grumpy Bear costume. Even if Jin Ling hated the theme, he could admit Jiang Cheng’s certainly fit him. The man sighed, exasperatedly, his husband dressed as Good Luck Bear hanging off his arm and giving the youngest man a shiteating grin.
“You think I’m not trying?” Jiang Cheng hissed back. Jin Ling hmphed, turning and almost smacking into his uncle Lan Wangji.
“Apologies, A-Ling.” The man (in a Bedtime Bear costume, if you wanted to know) simply said, before heading back to his husbands and son (who was in a Funshine Bear costume). Jin Ling huffed, even though he wasn’t even remotely mad or embarrassed and crossed his arms over his chest.
His family had done this for years as a tradition, Jin Ling had just figured that it would end when he and Lan Sizhui had turned eighteen. Apparently not, considering their uncles (and fathers) had dragged them out once again for another year of “fun” (read: diabetes and aching feet).
A tap on his shoulder shocked him out of his thoughts, and his mouth widened when he saw his boyfriend dressed in a Best Friend Bear onesie and smiling at him. He was about to hug him before remembering how he threw him to the wolves, instead deciding to pout.
“You asshole, were you coming all along?” He asked, looking away from him. Lan Jingyi laughed, pulling him into a hug.
“Yeah, my costume got in a little last minute so I needed to get you out of the house to get dressed. Don’t be too mad, A-Ling, I would never actually leave you to fend for yourself,” Lan Jingyi teased, poking his boyfriend on the cheek, “Aren’t you supposed to be an adult, stop pouting!” Jin Ling rolled his eyes.
Even with his boyfriend there, this entire thing was stupid and ridiculous. He was sure his father would hate it if he was still here. His mom might’ve liked it, but that changed nothing!
“A-Ling! Come here, we’re going to take a group picture!” Wei Wuxian called.
Oh well, he couldn’t exactly say he hated it… completely at least.
