Prompt Day 21 - Character You Haven't Written Yet

Summary:

Waning Moon Officer is just trying to go about his business. But the one person he's trying to avoid is trying to find him.

Notes:

From the MXTX-Tober prompt list on Twitter! I decided to use these to write little micro/flash fictions for various characters from the book series by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. I hope you enjoy!

Work Text:

It was hardly a rare thing to see the Waning Moon Officer making his way through the Ghost City; though he was quiet and unassuming compared to the rowdy crowds, ghosts and humans alike always seemed to know when he was coming through and made room without pause or complaint. Not that he'd yell or demand - he was far too reserved for all that - but no one wanted him going back to Chengzhu and saying that he had been delayed on his errand.

As Yin Yu turned down one of the marketplace streets however, he stopped in his tracks the moment he realized there was a familiar figure drifting through the crowds, looking with open, blunt curiousity and showing no shame at all to stop and bother the stall owners as he went. If Yin Yu had any sort of delusion or prayer for mistaken identity, it was quickly dashed when he overheard the tall martial god speaking.

"Hey," Quan Yizhen demanded, not even bothering to start with a polite address. "I'm looking for my Shixiong. I heard he might be here. Have you seen him?"

The stall owner, a woman selling fabrics and trying to mind her own business, raised her brow. "Why would I have any idea what your Shixiong looks like? Go on, scram, you're too big and you're shadowing my goods!" Yizhen huffed, but moved on to the next stall. "Hey…"

Yin Yu didn't stick around to tempt fate any further. He turned on his heel and started down the road he'd come from.

Even half way down, he could still hear Yizhen's voice echoing through, and the name of Shixiong rang louder than any part. He picked up his pace, and a few ghosts started to look at him with confusion as he walked by. Was Waning Moon Officer not going to address that screaming idiot god in the marketplace? Was he fleeing the scene?

No, of course not, they wouldn't dare. It was his own paranoia that was creeping in with these thoughts. He was obviously on a very important errand. He was loyal to a fault, and if he had somewhere else to be, then he had somewhere else to be. If the god caused issue, it was hardly like he couldn't be dealt with.

Yin Yu kept up his brisk, hurried pace - not running, for certain - until he had returned back to the Paradise Manor. He paused at the doors, knowing that he hadn't completed his errand, but there was little need to worry. His Highness was visiting His Lord, so he would certainly not notice Yin Yu's delay, nor him retreating to his own quarters to take some calming breaths for the rest of the evening.

Maybe someday, he'd be ready to face down his past shidi again. But today was certainly not that day.
