Work Text:

It's funny

His life's work crescendos into his biggest moment. The hundreds of years clawing his way to the top of his world, all the people who he stepped on, using them as ladder rungs or entertainment. The moment at hand was meant to be the moment where his world would become infinitly larger than before, overshadowing everything else making it all so insignificant and meaningless in comparison. He was to become a god and gods don't care about individuals but the nation as one.

With the hopes of claiming his birth right despite how much it was denied, being tossed out after his first breath without a real chance to prove his worth. This time around he'd be able to prove his creator wrong and uproot her rule over his homeland, though he could barely stand calling it that after all of those who betrayed him.

Becoming all powerful, all knowing , supposedly.
This was it it was now are never, with a miniscule chess piece granting him all the power he was destined to have and a giant robotic mech to aid in his archonic conquest.

So then what happened?
How, with all the power he reclaimed, did he lose to an infant god without followers and a traveller with a rusty sword and equaly infantile flying thing

Without knowing it he had won 168 different times, taking the his second gnosis from the infant god but it wasn't real. He won 168 times without fail but it didn't mean anything it was just another dream after all, just another dream of his swiftly turning into a nightmare like the rest of them as the scene that replays is revealed to be fake. Just another one of his hopes that fell apart quickly after birth.

Tha last fight was real, it was the most important one to win and yet against another god of electro, the traveller with aid of nahida and her invisible nation feeding them all the possible ways to stop him, he was bested. The end of his short lived godhood was both painfuly slow and surprisingly fast.

Nahida had taken his gnosis and in the process of its excruciating removal Scaramouche grew desperate to keep it as he could feel its affects fade in him, he ended up crashing through the panels of his mech in attempt to stop her. With each push closer to her, ignoring the auditory snaps of the wires holding him up snapping.

All at once the severance of his connection to the mech and the gnosis were gone, in his desperation to retrieve his purpose after losing it once already he overlooked the distance he was from Nahida and without the wires keeping him tied to his mech he fell.

The fall was fast both actually falling and the time it took for his mech to lose its purpose compared to how much preparation required to set it all up. After his fall nahida had already returned to the travellers side. He could see them from under some debris that fell with him, he saw them leave to a different realm, one of memory.

The fall wasn't anything fatal or even much damaging, it was just unexpected. He had wished it was though, he had failed his original task, the reason he was created, the reason he was abandoned. Despite his efforts against his creators decision she had been proven correct in her judgment, that he was too weak to hold a gnosis, the apple didn't fall far from the tree as she was too weak to get rid of her mistake. The news of his artificial ascension probably didn't reach her ear before it had ended. And so scaramouche stayed under the rubble.

Since the traveler and company left it gave Scaramouche time to think about his next move. He burned his bridges with most of the fatui since he ditched them, it was funny how he was so bitter at those who left him only to do the same with them, although it wasn't like anyone working in the fatui was close enough that abandonment meant anything more than an unceremonious job resignation and a man hunt but it was still worth a small laugh.

The more he lay there thinking the more he thought about his purpose now since his creator was right, it was sad state of affairs thinking that his attempts to get back at her for daring to make him and throw him away were all for nothing, as simple as a pety act of attention seeking from a child to a mother. It was funny to think that, despite all of his hard work to prove he could be a better god than the god who abandoned him, for it to end at the hands of one mortal.

He was never going to be able hold a gnosis and the proof to that fact was ontop of him in pieces. Without the fatui or a home to return to and the fact that entire nations know of him and his failures, it was going to be hard trying to build up his world again.

With everything that slipped through his fingers, purpose, family, reputation and more he thought of giving up completely, in whatever way was easiest because at that point he only wanted to stop existing as he was, as a patheticly small child who couldn’t even complete his only task in life being deemed worthless. Falling In between the cracks and belonging nowhere not with humans, gods or animals, he had always been alone and most who had been with him for long enough would leave him one way or another without reason or fail.

With that thought passing through his mind he decided that after the greatest failure of his existence he was going to take a break from suffering defeats and betrayals and just sleep. As exhaustion makes itself known to him, neverminding the possibilities of dreams or nightmares he closed his eyes and while under the collapsing monument of what he could have been if he had been stronger, he is put to rest for the first time in many years.
