Work Text:
Usually, on the days when they had to go into school, Gou would return to Sakuragi Labs no less upbeat than they usually was. That was not the case today. Today they came home hours earlier than they should have.
When they get in, the trainer goes to greet Cinderace but only Cinderace and none of their other pokemon, before they goes up to the room they share with Satoshi.
Gou doesn’t even respond to the older trainer when Satoshi asks how their day had been. They walk right past him and up the stairs. Leaving behind one very confused Pokemon trainer.
When an hour passed with no sign of his boyfriend re-emerging from upstairs, Satoshi heads upstairs. He finds Gou sitting on their bed, still in their school uniform. They is staring at their bag they had obviously dumped on the floor when they entered the room.
“Gou?” he calls, stepping into the room. Satoshi crosses the room and takes a seat on the bed beside them. A moment passes.
“Did something happen today?” he asks quietly, carefully as he pets Pikachu who was sitting in his lap.
“You know how I went into school today?” ” Gou asks, still not looking away from his bag.
“Yeah?” Satoshi says. He waits patiently for his boyfriend to explain.
“At the end of first-hour class I was called to the headmaster’s office and he told me that — that I was being expelled for repeated truancy,” they say. “-I’ve missed too many school days,” Gou explains.
“Sorry about that,” Satoshi apologises. Technically Gou’s expulsion is his fault; If they hadn’t met on Lugia’s back that day then maybe Gou wouldn’t have been expelled today.
“It’s not your fault. This day was coming eventually, I just didn’t expect it so soon,” they say. “It’s probably better, right? Now I don’t have to worry about going in every few weeks. I'm free to travel for longer at a time and don’t have to leave all the time,” They could both tell that Gou is trying to convince themself that yes, this is actually a good thing.
“That’s true but it doesn’t mean you can’t be sad about it,” For someone who frequently used onomatopoeia as a way of explaining things, Satoshi got this sentence exactly right.
