Someone Who Loves You

Summary:

Returning to a somewhat ‘normal’ life had never really seemed like a possibility for Nancy and Jonathan, after fighting monsters, travelling to otherworldly dimensions, learning about secret government experiments, and surviving world ending events, they seemed to have finally found a way there.

Notes:

Happy Stranger Things Day! I love baby fics and I’ve wanted to write one of my own for a while now and after multiple days of draft revisions, I finally have the first chapter done. I’ve also never written a fic this long before, let alone a multi-chapter one so this was definitely a challenge from the start but I really enjoyed it. I have a few ideas for future chapters, with other characters that I’ll add in the tags when I post them, but those are not going to come in until later most likely, depends on how long I’ll have this go for honestly, but if there is anything specific you’d like to see, feel free to comment below and let me know what you’d like to see in the future. Enjoy!

Chapter 1: A New Life

Chapter Text

Returning to a somewhat ‘normal’ life had never really seemed like a possibility for Nancy and Jonathan, after fighting monsters, travelling to otherworldly dimensions, learning about secret government experiments, and surviving world ending events, they seemed to have finally found a way there.

They had moved into a small one-bedroom apartment that the could just barely afford, landed entry-level jobs at the New York Times, just after graduating college and up until very recently, eloped at the courthouse, it was a new chapter for them, and they were excited to start it together, but as life is, it threw a curveball at them when they were least expecting it.

Nancy was feeling sick as of late, but thought she was just coming down with the flu, until she missed her period, then she started to worry. she picked up a pregnancy test at the pharmacy and took it just before Jonathan got home from work, the 3 minutes she had to wait might as well have been 3 years since that’s what it felt like, but when she saw those 2 pink lines staring back at her, that confirmed it, pregnant.

She felt such a flood of emotions, some good, most bad, then a million questions ran through her head, What would Jonathan say? How would he react? Did she even have what it takes to be a mother? Is the timing even right? Honestly, it all overwhelmed her so much she just began to cry, she didn’t know what to do or how to feel, but she snapped back to reality though when she heard Jonathan knock on the door,

“Nancy, you okay?” He asked softly,

“Yeah,” she lied,

“Are you sure? I heard crying,”

“Y-Yeah, I-“

“Can I come in?”

She barely even had time to hide the test in her lap before he opened the door, he saw her sitting against the far wall of the bathroom, tear tracks down her cheeks and hands trembling. “Hey, what’s wrong?” He asked as he got down to her level, “Did something happen today?” Nancy couldn’t even look at him, she just stared at the ground, trying her best to hold it together, “Nancy, Can you please look at me?” He turned her chin towards him and she looked at him with her eyes teary and fearful, “What’s wrong?” He asked again.

She opened her mouth to speak but could barely get the first syllable out before she broke down again, Jonathan just responded by wrapping his arms around her, trying his best to comfort her, he had no idea what could’ve happened to make her this upset but he knew she just needed to let it all out.

Once she had calmed down enough to speak again, he asked her again, “Are you okay?”

“I-I don’t know,” she sniffed as she began to wipe away her tears,

“Alright, now can you please tell me why you’re upset,” he coaxed,

She looked down at the test in her lap again and then back up at him, the fear and nausea began to bubble up again but she took a deep breath and began to speak, “So you know I wasn’t feeling well for the last little bit, right? And I thought it was just the flu and then I missed my period, so I took a test today to be sure and-” she handed him the test sitting in her lap, “I’m pregnant.” Nancy’s lip began to quiver again and she buried her face in her hands as she began to cry once more.

Jonathan looked down at the little plastic stick she’d handed him, and stared at it in disbelief, he was shocked and then excited and then scared, then he felt an overwhelming amount of sympathy for her, he hadn’t seen her this scared since the day he pulled her out of that tree in the woods, he wrapped his arms around her, cradling her head as she continued to cry,

“Everything’s gonna be alright, I promise,” he whispered to her,

“I’m so scared Jonathan,” she sniffed,

“I know Nance, it’s gonna be alright,” he reiterated as he kissed her head.

“How are we going to afford raising a child, we can barely afford to live here ourselves? We’re barely out of college, we’re going to have to move, I’m going to have to quit my job, and we’ll end up just like my parents, a nuclear family at the end of the cul-de-sac, we-“

“Hey, hey, relax. Everything is going to be okay. You’re not quitting your job, we’re not moving and we’re not going to end up like your parents Nancy, I promise, we’ve saved the world on more than one occasion, we exposed a government lab, you helped push me to go to NYU when I thought I shouldn’t, we both got lucky enough to start working towards our dream jobs straight out of college, and at the New York Times no less, I don’t think any of that sounds like your parents, I think it just sounds like us, and I know you’re scared, I am too, but at the same time, I’m excited, yes, this is a little unexpected, but if I had to do this with someone, I’m so glad it’s you.”

Nancy smiled as her eyes began to grow wet again at his speech, she figured part of how emotional she’d been today had to do with her newfound pregnancy, but it didn’t matter, she kissed her husband passionately, “I love you, I’m happy I get to go on this journey with you, you’re going to be an amazing dad.” She said as she kissed him softly once more, “I love you too, you’re going to be an amazing mom.” He whispered as he wiped away some of her remaining tears, “Thank you,” she whispered as she hugged him once more, grateful to have him be so understanding and compassionate about the situation.

After the whole ordeal, Jonathan decided to document the occasion, Nancy wasn’t up for it originally, but once she learned what he was doing, she got on board, he wanted to take a photo of her belly each month to document the growth and progress made throughout her pregnancy, Nancy quickly touched up her makeup and fixed her hair as Jonathan got his camera set up, he got a profile shot of her cradling her flat, as of now stomach, and smiling excitedly. Without even seeing it, he knew that was going to be one of his all time favourite pictures of Nancy.

He took care of her the rest of the night, letting her pick dinner, watching her favourite movie with her and just making sure she was overall relaxed since she was so stressed out earlier, and when they went to bed that night, he pulled her close, both their hands falling at her stomach.
