Work Text:
It was the last day of the carnival. Wednesday had promised Enid the previous day they would go together.
The carnival lights shined brightly in the distance. Enid ran ahead of Wednesday with a huge smile on her face.
She waited for Wednesday at the entrance and bought their bracelets that would let them have free reign over all of the rides.
Enid looked around lightheartedly.
Music can be heard all around them and she could see kids running around, playing with sparklers in the distance. There were food stands set up around all the exits. The rides illuminated in the darkness, it was beautiful.
“Have you ever been on any of these rides before?” The blonde asked her companion.
“No, never.” The dark-haired girl answers.
Enid’s eyes widen at the statement, turning to see Wednesday’s expressionless face.
“Never?” Enid repeats in disbelief.
“Never,” Wednesday verifies.
“Well, I guess we’re going to have to change that,” Enid replies enthusiastically.
After the black-haired girl was done with her bracelet Enid gently yanked Wednesday’s arm. Leading them towards their first ride, a terrifying-looking thing called the Zipper.
The Zipper is a long, rotating, oval ride with a cable around its edge that spins twelve cages around the ride.
A carnie went around and locked everyone in the cages, making sure they were closed properly.
There was silence for a moment, only the sound of people talking and loud music blasting on the speakers could be heard.
The Zipper started up, catching Enid off guard, she barely held in a scream as the cage shot up into the air.
The worst this about the Zipper was there was no build-up, no sound to indicate when it will start. It would start and stop at any second.
The ride stopped at the top.
Enid slowly reached to grip the other girl’s hand, slow enough so if Wednesday wanted to she could pull her hand away.
Enid felt Wednesday tense, but she didn’t let go.
Enid let a smile form. Wednesday relaxed. Neither of them let go, though.
The ride started up again, spinning and twirling them as it pleased. Enid had to put her hand on the padding ahead of her to steady herself.
For a split second Enid could’ve sworn she saw Wednesday smile and she decided this was her favorite carnival ride.
When the ride was over Enid felt like she wanted to puke.
“We can stop if you want to.” The Addams’ reassured her.
“No, trust me we’re just getting started.” Enid protested.
Enid leaned on the railing, she felt light-headed. The music seemed to be blaring louder on the speakers, and it was too overwhelming.
The music filled her ears.
Enid breathed in and out, trying to calm herself down.
She could feel Wednesday’s hand rubbing in smooth steady circles along her back, trying to comfort her.
Enid waited for the dizziness to pass before leading them to their next ride, the bumper cars.
Luckily for them, the line wasn’t that long, there were only four people in front of them.
Once the first group was gone the worker opened the gate to let them in.
Wednesday hopped into the passenger side, which left Enid in the driver's seat.
The worker hit the button and the ride began.
She collided with another car sending it crashing into the wall.
She turned her head and looked over at Wednesday’s side.
“Wednesday did you-“
She stopped dead in her tracks.
The dark-haired girl was glaring at a boy in another cart, trying to intimidate him. To her shock, the boy was staring back at her unfazed.
The kid couldn’t have been older than ten.
When the kid’s older brother noticed them staring he gave them a dirty look, before crashing into their cart.
Good thing Enid was the one driving, that could’ve ended badly.
They rode all sorts of things, even the kiddie rides because Enid wanted Wednesday to have ‘the full carnival experience.
The teacups were her favorite, they went on it twice already.
“What’s that?” Wednesday motioned to the various games set up.
“Carnival games,” The werewolf said.
Wednesday raised her eyebrow slightly, if she was talking to anyone else they wouldn't have noticed it.
She confused. Enid thought.
“You win the game and they give you one of those prizes hanging up.” Enid pointed to the assortment of toys.
“You want to try?”
Wednesday nodded her head ever so slightly.
“Okay, let’s go!” Enid exclaimed.
They passed by Eugene he was playing a fishing game for kids. It wasn’t until she looked up did she realize why he was playing.
A small bee plushy was hanging in the corner. It was the last one.
Eugene shouted with glee as the carnie presented him with the stuffed bee.
He won.
Enid smiled to herself.
Good for him.
Wednesday stopped when they reached the shooting gallery.
Enid reached into her pocket to pay, but Wednesday beat her to it.
Enid gazed around for the prize she would pick when she wins. A unicorn plushie.
This looks easy, Enid thought.
Enid missed all the shots completely.
“Better luck next time.” The worker told her.
Wednesday hit the targets dead center and from what Enid was seeing this wasn’t her first time using a gun.
Wednesday kept glancing over at Xavier in the next booth over.
He was playing darts and kept glancing at Wednesday.
They looked like they were having some sort of contest and from what Enid could tell Wednesday was winning.
Wednesday hit the last target swiftly knocking it down. When she was done she looked back at Xavier, only this time she didn’t look away.
They were having a stare-off, for what Enid does not know.
“Let’s go get some food”. Enid blurted, trying to ease whatever was going on between the two of them.
The worker handed Wednesday a stuffed unicorn and they began walking toward the food stands.
The dark-haired girl glared at Xavier when they passed him.
Wednesday passed the stuffed unicorn to Enid, who took it and immediately hugged it.
Enid quipped her eyebrow. “It’s mine?”
“You wanted it, didn’t you?” The shorter girl remarked.
“Well, yeah” Enid replies slowly.
She didn't even know Wednesday was watching her when she was contemplating winning the unicorn.
“Then it’s yours,” despite Wednesday's reserved voice end could tell she meant it.
While they were walking around the food stalls they saw various Nevermore students and multiple students from the town’s high school.
Bianca and the rest of the scales sat at the tables gossiping. They weren’t eating or anything, just talking.
Ajax was looking wistfully at the carnival rides.
Enid felt bad for him, she can’t imagine what it must feel like for the gorgon.
Enid saw Yoko ordering a lemonade from a booth. She took out a small vial from her jacket pocket before adding it to her drink.
Probably blood. Enid guessed.
Hell, at one point they even saw Sheriff Galpin and his deputies surveying around.
When he saw them he gave them a look, not quite mean and not friendly.
Enid wonders why he doesn’t like them, there must be a good reason for it. She remembers Wednesday mentioning something about her father.
The stands had various food choices that included (but were not limited to) fried pickles, mini-sugar donuts, corndogs, and nachos.
Enid ended up getting a caramel apple and Wednesday picked out cotton candy. The cotton candy reminded her of the werewolf’s multi-colored hair.
Wednesday took a bite of the cotton candy, giving a dissatisfied look at it.
Enid swiftly captured the moment on her phone without Wednesday noticing.
That's gonna be her new lock screen by tomorrow.
“How is it?” The werewolf asked, knowing full well what the answer would be.
“You can really taste the sugar,” Wednesday replied, her voice as impassive as always.
“We can switch if you want.” The werewolf tried to grab the cotton candy, but Wednesday pulled it out of her reach.
“No, I want the candied substance.“
“It’s cotton candy Wednesday.” Enid corrected.
“Come on, we're going to miss them!” said a random passerby dragging along a helpless boy, who struggle to keep his balance.
Enid focused her attention in the direction they were heading.
A group of people started to form around in a circle.
The fireworks must be starting soon, Enid wanted to see them before they left.
Wednesday pulled on her arm, leading her in the direction of the rides.
“Where are we going, Willa? The rides are that way!” Enid gestured behind them, where people were scattered around, looking up at the midnight sky.
“The Ferris wheel is this way,” Wednesday replied.
Ferris wheel?
They ran up to the Ferris wheel, no one was on it, the ride completely stopped, it looked as though they were done for the day.
“I guess we can’t ride after all.” Enid gestured to the closed sign.
“Guess again.” Wednesday grabbed the blonde's hand before opening the gate.
“Hey! You can’t” the carnie was stopped by Wednesday, who slipped a bill inside his front pocket.
He was about to give it back until he looked at it. Without another word, he slipped the bill back into his pocket before putting on a smile.
“Hop on, but make it quick.” He ordered, then motioned for Wednesday and Enid to get into the cart.
Enid saw Wednesday whisper something to him, slipping another bill into his pocket, before getting in the cart.
The man nodded before securing them in place and starting the Ferris wheel.
“Did you just bribe the carnie?” Enid questioned.
“Maybe,” Wednesday turned and fixed her lifeless gaze on Enid. “Why are you upset?”
“Impressed is more like it.” She remarked, smiling at the girl before her.
The ride immediately stopped when they reached the top.
She glanced over at Wednesday who didn't even look the least bit surprised by the occurrence, in fact, she was smirking.
“Did you plan this?” Enid asked her with a hint of surprise in her voice.
The Addams just looked at her, with what Enid thinks is her version of amusement.
The view at the top was perfect, you could see everything from up there. The games, the rides, the food stands.
The people walking around looked like ants.
She saw Tyler playing skeeball, he looked like he was trying to impress his friend.
A firework shot up in the sky setting it ablaze, and making a loud boom noise in the process.
Enid grabbed the noise-canceling headphones out of her pocket before putting them on.
Enid doesn’t like loud noises, they hurt her ears. She had yet to fully grasp her werewolf abilities.
It wasn’t until she looked at Wednesday did she realize that the girl was talking to her. She couldn’t hear what the other girl was saying but nodded out of politeness.
Wednesday stopped talking and stared at Enid. Her expression never changed yet Enid could feel emotions radiating off her.
They looked into each other's eyes, and for some reason, it felt like time had stopped. It was just them, alone on a Ferris wheel their only light source being the fireworks in the surrounding sky.
Wednesday stretched her hand out and grabbed Enid’s face gently pulling her in.
Enid felt her face heat upon realizing what was happening.
Wednesday was leaning in close.
Her lips were cold and soft.
Enid brought her hand up to Wednesday’s cheek.
Eventually, the two pulled apart, Enid was blushing hard and biting her lips to keep her werewolf teeth from showing.
Wednesday’s eyes were wide and her mouth had what appeared to be a smile.
Wednesday was smiling at her, for her.
Enid couldn't stop herself from grinning upon seeing Wednesday’s smile. Her fangs were sticking out the dark-haired girl didn't seem bothered by them.
She has a beautiful smile. Enid thought to herself as she leaned in to kiss Wednesday again.
